I finished it this morning. When the credits started rolling I stood up and applauded. This is, without a doubt, the greatest game ever made.

    EDIT: 500th post!
  • I just did a mission involving hijacking a cargo plane full of weapons by flying a crop duster into the back of it. Brilliant stuff. I'm getting FIFA this week and I'll get Zelda when it comes out but I don't think I'll be playing them for a while, not when I still have this.
This is, without a doubt, the greatest game ever made.

It is very good, it might be my favourite (not sure if I prefer this or Assassin's Creed 2) and it's definitely one of the best, but I'm not sure if it's the best. Objectively speaking I think the best is probably Red Dead or one of the Zelda's.

Come October 1st, I'll be torn between Battlefield 4's early-entry beta and the Online for this. I'll be switching back and forth, I'm sure. I think I'm going to go through 'GTA V' tonight and collect all the space ship parts.

Red Dead has been my subjective and objective #1 since release. I really think GTA V dethroned it on both counts, though.

Well gentlemen, this explains why some of you are losing your customized vehicles:

I've now beaten the game and await the online next week. I haven't had the car bug happen to me yet, though it's good to get some news on why it occurs. Hopefully a fix is on the way.

Just got all the waste and have finished all the collectibles. Time to beat the game now and do some more miscellaneous stuff so I can get yet another 100% on a GTA game. Been doing it since GTA III.

Just completed it with the feel good ending. Great game. Maybe the best of the franchise yet.

I would say 'Vice City' is my favorite, but I haven't played it in so long, and I don't know how much I would enjoy it if I returned. I think 'GTA IV' still stands as my favorite. I must have put hundreds of hours into that game.

I still don't think anything competes with GTA V. Objectively and subjectively.

I just had too many complaints to truly love it, especially after waiting five years for it.

Really? I was blown away by it. My only gripe was the multiple endings, especially since two of them are completely out of character for Franklin. C should've been the only ending.

Indeed. Driving was tweaked, but definitely way too arcade-y for my tastes, the car damage was incredibly scaled back from IV and was beyond unrealistic (in comparison to IV), you took way too much damage, the plot wasn't that great - spend the entire game with little-to-no money until you manage to do a heist that'll grant you only one big purchase, if that - and the characters? I didn't really care for 'em. I learned to like them as the story went on, but overall, they're just mostly scumbags I didn't come to really love or enjoy playing as. I'm sure there are smaller things that can come to mind, but I won't bash it further.

Game was entertaining and I got my money's worth, but it was definitely a letdown for me.

EDIT: I feel bad looking back at all the negatives I said, so I'll shed light on the positives: the graphics, obviously. Such a broad, expansive, incredibly detailed open world that leaves me stunned as I drive up curved roads and hit a perfect angle as the sun is setting or rising. The entirety of the movement in the game is much better, being able to run and gun and the cover system isn't as wonky. The customization is very nice, though I didn't trick out too many cars in fear of them disappearing like some people have reported. The amount you can do in this game is tremendous, as well, and when I think of how much time my buddy and I goofed off on GTA IV's online with NOTHING to do but the fun you made for yourself, I cannot wait to see how much time I'll sink into the Online for this.

1:14 AM and I got my 70th Gold medal and with it, my final single player achievement.

I wouldn't quite go as far as @Creasy47 but perhaps given the amount of development time it had, it should have been more. Yes, it was a very good game. Technically astounding but it was still filled with minor faults and glitches for me to consider it the best thing ever. It's not my favourite game (Resident Evil 4), favourite R* game (Red Dead Redemption) or indeed favourite GTA game (Vice City).

I too had a gripe with the multiple endings. Thankfully, I chose C first time round and then replayed A & B which both seemed totally misplaced with the rest of the story. A bad decision to include them.

And as mentioned already, the fact that you go through almost the entire game with very little money until you've completed the final heist is also disappointing. My interest in a GTA game always wanes once I've finished the story so I'm not bothered by having lots of money afterwards to buy properties etc. Plus the fact I've spent a shit load of cash on cars and fully customizing them, only for the glitch to not save them in the garage is very frustrating.

On the plus side, I personally liked all three characters, expecially Trevor (more so than Nico or CJ Johnson) and the ability to drop in and out on them at any point, particularly during the missions was superb. Graphically, I don't think much has changed since IV. Los Santos looks a little bland. Graphics aren't everything but I'd have expected a vast improvement over the last game. Having said that, the explosions this time were awesome.

The face that the entire map unlocked from the start was also a massive plus. The driving too was greatly improved and the cars handle like a dream. Going flat out and performing a handbrake turn around a 90 degree corner is so satisfying.

The comedy/satire is great also. Taking the piss out of the likes of Facebook (LifeInvader), Twitter (Bleeter), Scientology (Epsilon Program - a very good Kifflom to you all!), Fame & Shame (Britain's Got Talent) even violent video games (CoD anyone?) was genius. Very, very funny dialogue. As ever the radio stations and commercials are one of the game's highpoints. I liked nothing more than driving about just to hear the advert for Los Santos' football team, the LS Benders. "You're gonna get your f***ing head kicked in!". Just brilliant.

My favourite aspect was the aircraft. For the first time, I found the planes really quite easy to control, which made them fun to fly, although they should have featured in the missions more than they did. The Fighter Jet especially.

At best, I'd score this game 9/10 but I honestly don't even think it's the best game I've played this year. That honour must go to The Last of Us. I'm guessing we'll get a Los Santos Stories game in the next couple of years before GTA VI hits the next gen consoles after that.

I'm hoping the online mode is going to shine when it goes live next Tuesday. I just hope R*'s servers are going to be able to cope with a few million people all scrambling to get online at the same time but given that there have already been problems with uploading photos to The Social Club, I'm not holding my breath!

@WillyGalore, I think the money thing was just an instance of them trying it out and some not liking it. I know I always said "You know, it's annoying in that a few missions in, I have a bunch of cash in a GTA game, but nothing to buy." Now that we have lots to buy, we never make cash. They should've went with one or the other.

I guarantee come Tuesday, the servers won't hold up and there will be massive sign-in/lag problems for all. I'll just stick with the BF4 beta until they're resolved.

I was surprised they put a fighter jet in the game but never incorporated it. I beat the entire game 100% and not once was I told to get into a fighter jet.

It's definitely my favourite GTA game and my favourite R* game. One of my favourite games ever too.

    Grand Theft Auto Ranking

    1) GTA V
    2) Vice City
    3) GTA IV
    4) San Andreas
    5) GTA III

    And my favourite games

    1) Assassin's Creed 2
    2) Dishonoured
    3) James Bond Nightfire
    4) GTA V
    5) Assassin's Creed Revelations
    6) Zelda Twilight Princess

That said, I do have some issues with it. Mainly the awful helicopter controls and how hard it is to earn money.

I bought FIFA 14 this morning but I want to complete this before I play it.

I hoped I wasn't the only one who had an issue here. I don't know what R* has changed but the helicopters are just terrible to fly. Really frustrating when you're trying to pick up/drop cargo onto the back of a truck.

My list would be the same as yours @thelivingroyale except I'd swap #1 and #2 around.
  • Loved the planes but the helicopters, yeah I agree with you, they were awful.

They were bad enough in IV but it's even worse here, mainly because (like you said), some missions involve picking up and dropping cargo.

I really liked the main characters (Trevor especially, probably one of my favourite characters ever), but I thought the side characters/allies were a bit of a let down compared to GTA IV.

Roman, Brucie, the rasta guy, etc. I don't think I've met anyone in this game so far (outside of the main characters), who I'd put on the same level as them.

Roman and Brucie were awful though.

For the record, my R* ranking (excluding Midnight Club, Table Tennis and Max Payne)

    1: Grand Theft Auto V
    2: Red Dead Redemption
3: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
4: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    5: LA Noire
6: The Ballad of Gay Tony
    7: Grand Theft Auto III
    8: Undead Nightmare
    9: The Lost and Damned
10: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
    11: Bully
12: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
    13: Grand Theft Auto 2
    14: Grand Theft Auto IV
15: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
    16: Grand Theft Auto
17: Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969
    18: Red Dead Revolver
19: Grand Theft Auto: London, 1961
    20: Grand Theft Auto Advance

Agreed again. The three protagonists were very well written and performed. Trevor was just brilliant. The supporting cast though were terribly bland and forgettable. Where was Ken Rosenburg when you need him?

The expansions for IV had a great supporting cast, but other than that I don't think GTA has done well in that department sine San Andreas, which had an AMAZING supporting cast. They need to bring big name actors into the picture again.

I don't see how bringing known actors into the fold is going to improve those characters that aren't very well written in the first place. I'd rather have experienced voiceover artists who know how the industry works rather than drafting in some big time Hollywood A lister who's only there to for the pay cheque.

Well, what was Tenpenny? Really just an OTT corrupt cop. But Jackson was stellar and made Tenpenny one of the most memorable characters in the series.
  • I hope the next game they make is a Bully sequel. I really enjoyed that game. Get a new protagonist though, the kid in the last one was an annoying dick imo.
Roman and Brucie were awful though.

Roman I really liked, he was a loveable bullshitter responsible for the funniest moments in the game. I thought Brucie was also really funny.

@thelivingroyale, they're looking into it, apparently. I would love a 'Bully' sequel.

Looking past the annoying phone calls every five minutes about bowling or going to the strip club, I loved the characters/supporting characters in IV.

But that's a subjective opinion. A-list star still doesn't guarantee great acting. You'll find some of the best performances are given by actors who just specialise in voice work (Nolan North being a prime example). Trevor was a great character too and he was voiced by an unknown.

I'm not saying it's exclusive, but a lot of the performances by unknowns left me dry. Whereas almost all of the big names have made for a lot of my favourites in the series.
