    Double post sorry
To get to your problem is it only the br disc of SF that you are having this trouble with?.

I would say you have a faulty SF BR mine plays beautifully and if the DVD looks better you have either a faulty disc or the player is faulty or not set up right.

The difference between Blu ray and DVD is night and day.

I have a question for those with the OHMSS Blu-ray:

I hear that the colour is said too be a light too bright on the DVD. Most reviews seem to say that the whites are a little too white and that overall the thing is a little off. This is most upsetting of news because I love what Peter Hunt and Michael Reed did on that movie in terms of cinematography.

The imagequality is excellent, it looks as if it was filmed last week. I have not noticed the light color, i thought it was pretty dark.

Bloody ´ell, that´s a constructive idea, haven´t thought of that at all. Yeah, the other one doesn´t have that problem. Have to ask at the shop if they switch the SF br. Thanks!

I have the SE DVD, which is just fantastic. I believe the UE DVDs in general are a tad darker. I like the SE better. As far as I heard, the BRs are more like the SE.

How long should a blu-ray player last roughly?
My Toshiba, purchased October 2010 went bust March of this year. That's a lousy 2 yrs and 5 months. It was an internal mechanical breakdown. It was displaying fine, until it stopped being able to load or position the disc properly.
I' ve never had a dvd player quit so early into its life.
Meanwhile, I was enjoying my 24 Bond blu-rays, but for CR67, as the player wouldn't play it, even though there was nothing wrong with the disc.
I must say they all looked fab on blu-ray.
I got greats deals on the 9 previously unreleased North America titles. Amazon Canada put them all up for sale at $7.99 each

At least your player seems to have had intelligence, if it didn´t play CR67 ;-).
2 and a half years seems not ok. But the warranty was probably 2years and 4months, right?
I had several of the cheapest DVD players, and they lastet many years. What I noticed is that scratched discs, as one often gets from rental, tend to waste the player.

    Thanks @boldfinger
The warranty was one year, so there was no help whatsoever from Toshiba. It was quite amazing how uninterested they were that their product busted so soon after purchase. They didn't even want to look at the machine. I've got my complaint registered with them, case # assigned, to no avail. It's just a file to them.
What I did learn that was even if the machine was under warranty, they simply provide a new one. Their people don't fix anything. They just look at the broke one, and compile data as to why warrantied machines break.
This was a mechanical defect of some sort. The display had not deteriorated, which is what usually happens with worn out dvd or cd players. The machine just can't read the discs anymore.
Pain in the butt though as I have no idea how to fix it. Could be a simple repair for someone familiar with machine operation.
Looks like I will have to buy a new machine. A different brand though this time.
In the meantime, I get by with my old dvd player. Too bad though, all Bond blu-ray playing is on hold.

I am ashamed to say I haven´t read through all pages of this thread, so perhaps my query is redundant:
I switched from tube tv to led tv, and bought a br player. I have SF on dvd and br. The dvd looks stunning, the br has kind of a jerking picture, as if every second frame would be missing. Is there anything specific with the setting on my tv or br player I should check? Thanks!

That's just a problem with your TV trying to play a 24fps blu-ray at 60fps. Go into your blu ray settings and look for a "24p" mode.

Shop wouldn´t replace the disc yet, said load new updates. I did, but the problem is still the same. The guy at the shop where I bought the player says I have to switch the fps up as much as possible, but as far as I understand, brs are at 24fps, as @JawsIsAlive also says, thanks by the way. But setting the br player to 24fps doesn´t change anything. The jerking goes away if I turn on the judder correction, or how it´s called, but then the whole picture gets this ugly cheap-tv-show look, even if I put the judder correction on minimum.
I´ll try to get the shop replace me the disc. If the same problem is still there then, then so be it. Dvds are cheaper anyway, and I have no complaints about their picture quality.

Watching a DVD now on my Blu ray player is instantly recognisable, the difference is plain to see, I've never paid over the odds for a Player, my first was £150 back in 2009 and I purchased a multi region LG player and that was £70 last year. and it's never given me a days problem. I also have a Sony Bravia 32 inch full HD TV.

Gave my Brother my old Panasonic player and as far as I know it's still going. As for DVD's being cheaper, the difference is pretty minimal these days if you know the places to shop.

I couldn't go back to DVD after tasting HD it's superior in every way. Yes you gets some naff transfers where the studio has taken no care at all and is looking to fleece you with the minimum upgrade but you also get the likes of Criterion who deliver quality after quality releases and their releases look utterly draw dropping on Blu ray. If the quality is what you say then you have a set up issue, faulty hardware or the freakiest faulty disc I've ever heard of as Skyfall looks utterly stunning on the premier format.

The exact same box with the Skyfall disc included? More than likely.

It just seems like a lot of work for one extra film. Didn't they keep a slot open in the 'Bond 50' box so you could add SF? They should keep this 'Ultimate Collection Box Set' thing to a minimum. I finally made the switch from DVD to blu-ray when they released the rest of them separately, and I really hope I can just continue to collect them on blu-ray from here on out. It'll be a shame if they end up doing some big box set with a lot of proper special features and deleted scenes I've wanted to see for some time. (I'm looking at you, QoS alternate ending.)

I wholeheartedly agree but they're going to keep putting these things out there as long as they will sell. They know that we will keep buying them.

I don't think we'll get any more features until 2022 at least. EON like to space these things out. As long as the box sets sell, they'll always bring out a new one with all the films and we don't have that yet.

I could guess that far by myself, that´s why I asked if anyone had an idea as to how in detail the setting might be off.

Believe it or not, the disc was in fact faulty. Got it changed, and the new one doesn´t have those issues. The weird thing was, it was my very first BR, so I didn´t have anything to compare at first. Once I got some more it became obvious that a disc change might help.

I bought my first Blu-Ray player late last year pre-Skyfall and I still have no intention of buying Bond on BR. (except for Syfall). No new extras save for one documentary which I,m sure is quite inessential. Give me a whole load of new extras and more importantly QOS collectors edition ala Casino Royale and I might be tempted to part with my hard earned. Until then I'm more than happy with upscaling the superlative Ultimate Editions.

I'm still holding out for a cheaper copy of NSNA on blu-ray.
  • A few months after creating this thread (thank you to DarthDimi for moving it to the correct section) I decided to check in, and I am really glad to see that at least it has generated some discussion!

There are a few comments I'd like to respond to.
Given that it already says on the back Skyfall (coming 2013) - or something like that - then it has already been flagged up that Skyfall was a separate release. Would prefer it to match, but figured it wouldn't and it is not a deal breaker

Not a "deal breaker" for me either, as I did, in fact, buy the box set. That being said, if I can bug them enough to create small batch of matching blu-rays for the few people OCD enough to care like I do, then why not try?
    bondbat007 wrote:
I'm not signing it. Would I prefer the discs match? Yes of course. In the end it's not a big deal and I don't need to bother somebody at EON or Sony or wherever about it when they can be doing more important things.

I found your comment to be surprising. If you would prefer the discs match, then why not at least make that sentiment known to someone who might be in a position to do something about it? As for whoever would receive my petition being busy doing more important things, I reckon the companies are big enough that this isn't a problem. The guy or gal who would process our request isn't the same person currently scouting locations casting villains for Bond 24. Anyway, you seem like you agree with the petition so I'd love to have your support!

im just more pissed off that the main menu on the dvd/blu ray is so amature looking
doesnt have the excitement of the ultimate special edition dvd/ Bond 50 Blu Ray menus

Yes, I agree with this being a problem as well, but I think that the problem with the blu-ray disc artwork is a lot easier for them to solve than creating new content. I suppose it's a matter of picking battles.
    OHMSS69 wrote:
I am not too upset about it not matching. Would have been nice since the 50 anniversary set has a slot "reserved for SkyFall". I would have been surprised if it had matched.
I would sign it if I thought anyone gave a toss but the way the whole lacklustre bluray box set was handled tells me you are wasting your time entirely if you think anyone at EON is concerned in the slightest.

That's why I find this whole 'lets send a letter to Babs and MGW giving grovelling thanks' rather pathetic. They delivered a good film yes - but shouldn't that be the minimum requirement we expect from them? In all other aspects the 50th was mostly a disappointment.

I understand both of your skepticism, but since you say it "would have been nice" and that you "would sign it" I hope you both signed the petition. If not, please do so! I don't expect everyone who agrees with me to care as much (or be as OCD) as me, and I know it is a long shot that it will accomplish anything but clicking, signing, and sharing is an easy thing to do and I appreciate anyone's help! Even if it doesn't get anything done, you can't win if you don't play!

Here is the link again, if anyone would like to add their support. Thanks!!

I'm afraid I'm completely anal when it comes to matching boxes/cases etc.

I remember about three years ago and I broke Disc One of my FRWL Ultimate Edition DVD so I ordered another copy online. I was mortified to find that what I had been sent was the new updated jacket sleeve (white and gold). Now it's bad enough that it gave me sleepless nights as it didn't match the other 19 DVD's but more than that, the design was utterly appalling.

That's the OCD in me though I guess and doesn't really help to the debate going on here. Just thought I'd use the opportunity to get it off my chest.

As a footnote to this however, I do remember when DAD was released on DVD in early '03, I was concerned that the jacket cover was not going to match up but it was actually released with a two sided cover, the reserve of the jacket sleeve was designed for the 'Special Edition'. I wonder why this has not been done for any of the DVD's since?

I may be cynical but it could be a ploy to make us constantly update our collections when MGM decide to re-release the films featuring swanky new artwork and new bonus features. It's a similar tactic whenever a new Bond Theme CD is released, it never has the most recent song on it. Why the "Best of Bond...James Bond. 50 Years. 50 Tracks" CD couldn't have included Skyfall, I don't know.

But as far as petitions go? They can carry some weight when they're being aimed at the government but a multi-billion dollar corporation? No, I don't think they'll care for second.

In honest opinion the Special Edition 1999/2000 Dvd Covers were much better than the current Ultimate Special Edition

This. I didn't even realize that they would have a sleeve for Skyfall when I bought it so I wasn't terribly disappointed about the whole affair. I was upset that they didn't change the menu screen from the previous dvd release and the lack of special features. I'm very happy to have Bond on blu-ray but the whole thing felt rushed.

I am more concerned for the fact all the colors are wrong for half the movies. And no theatrical audios in good sound. Why? are some people so concerned for a superficial thing like the packagings? That's a missing boat if I've ever seen one.

For those of us who own the Bond 50 Blu-Ray set: which films are you proud to own and which would you prefer to toss out or just not watch ever again or when hell freezes over?

Amazon is now taking pre-orders on the James Bond 50th Anniversary Set + Skyfall, for some reason. I'm wondering if it will look like all the other films that are contained in the set:
