I'd put GE higher and Daylights lower. Daylights is good but suffers from a rather bland been-there-done-that kind of story. It's decent and at times exciting but a tad overrated by hard-core Bond fans IMHO. You want to see a more effective "serious" Bond film watch OHMSS.

In general a good list though.

On the whole, that's very good. Most films are in the right area with the correct ones top and tailing the list.

Well, yes, from a typical everyday gathering of reviews, that would definately be the right ranking. However, I was a little disappointed in the rankings of GE, DAF, OP, TND, and LALD. They should have been higher up. I also thought that OHMSS, GF, and TWINE were treated too well. On my list, they'd be pretty low.

That's not the general IMDB Bond ranking, which would no doubt look different. On the subject of GE, I find it to be the Bond that Brosnan struggles in. Geard more for Daltons style, Brosnan just can't get a grip on the role, not that he ever did. The film is screaming out for Daltons Bond, and gets a limp substitute. There's too many changes i'd have to make to that list.

On the other hand I really don't think Dalton would have fared too well with lighter/larger-than-life characters like Xenya Onatopp or even Samantha Bond's Monneypenny. I don't believe that Samantha Bond and Dalton/Janssen and Dalton would have worked as well.

But you are thinking in the GE that we had. If Dalton had stayed on, i'd imagine the cast would have been tweaked. And I think Dalton was more than capable of bringing a lighter touch to his Bond. Just like the misconception that he couldn't be charming. I would hope that Moneypenny would have been written very differently (See: Better) to the Samantha Bond Moneypenny we had. I would rather Moira Brooker as Moneypenny (or Bliss to have stayed on) with Dalton as Bond

I loved Samantha Bond's Monneypenny (I'm probably one of the few on here that does). I'd take her over Caroline Bliss's very forgettable school-girl Monneypenny anyday of the week. Bliss was by far the weakest of the 3 Monneypenny's IMHO.

Also, I thought Bean and Isabella were great in their respective parts so I wouldn't have wanted to replace them.

Dalton could certainly do humour when he wanted to (i.e. Hot Fuzz) but when it came to Bond, the lighter lines sometimes felt a bit...out of place coming from him.

Nice to see TLD rated at # 3! :) #7's a respectable ranking for TB. Nice to see better-than-usual rankings for YOLT, OP and TMWTGG. FYEO and GE are higher than I would place them but it's nice to see MR escape the bottom 3. AVTAK is fairly ranked at #20.

    Agreed.

If Dalton had stayed for a 3rd, I'm pretty sure EON would've kept Caroline Bliss and Robert Brown in their roles. Also, Anthony Hopkins might very well had played Trevelyan(who was originally written as an older, father-figure to Bond) and John Rhys-Davies probably would've played Pushkin instead of the Mishkin character we got instead.

I think had we seen Dalton in a third 007 it would most probably have been the last of the series. I still believe that while selfnamed purists tend to like Dalton, he the one person the general audience didn't like. And the general audience pays the bill not the fans that visit forums like these.
Pierce Brosnan was an excellent 007, like Craig he being let down by eager directors with really stupid choices in the screenplays.

Yes, a 3rd Dalton film would have been catastrophic. The attendance was dropping at an alarming rate, and no doubt a 3rd flick with Dalton would have ended the series. The series was in desperate need of a new, more popular Bond.

I find Samantha Bond unbearable as Moneypenny. She's like M's little poodle, joining in to verbally castrate Bond, and Bond doesn't fight his corner? The flirting is pointless, as I feel no chemisty between Brosnan and Bond.

Bean was ok, he manages to overshadow Brosnan without trying. Scorupco on the other hand, I found her to be rather bland. That's irrespective of how she was clothed in the film. I really just didn't care if she survived the film or not.

As for whether a 3rd Bond would have been the last of the series, given how badly the character has been handled since they brought the series back in 1995, it would have been a blessing to have ended the series in 1991 with Dalton.

I rather like Dalton but I'm not entirely convinced he could win over audiences - especially just after Roger Moore. I know about the whole "3rd film being the good one" argument, and that was certainly something that can be applied to Connery/Moore. The difference was that those 2 actors were ALREADY popular. Connery had starred in 2 very well received films, Moore was already well known in his "Saint".

I do, it's Bliss and Dalton I don't buy (I've said this before several times). In fact this is what they say in The Essential James Bond:

"Caroline Bliss fails to register a significant impact as the loved starved secretary but this is because the script does not provide much of the flirtatious banter that is traditional between MP and Bond...Dalton's Bond doesn't even seem aware of her affections and his relationship with Monneypenny is not in the least suggestive"

I agree with them and that's why I enjoyed SB far more in the role. She had a cheeky glint in her eye and like LM you could imagine her secretly enjoying a dirty joke with her Bond co-star. I just interpreted the "sexual harassment" stuff as a bit of fun. She's teasing Bond and playing hard to get like he does with her. Plus she's right, in real life it WOULD be sexual harassement :p

and I say this as a bloke.

Don't want to get too far off topic.

I think Samanatha Bond is a pretty unlikeable Moneypenny. There is a smug superciliouness to her where Lois Maxwell it comes across as witty - with SB it came across as bitchy.

And yes Bond rolls over and takes it - but thats Pierces Bond for you.

The character was nearly ruined beyond repair by that sordid grappling with Pierce on the table in DAD. It was allude dont show for thirty years but once again Tamahori gets it wrong.

Bean I never took seriously as a villain. His action agent major villain was at odds with the Blofeld like climax in the secret antennae base. He also struggled with the accent. I know he is a yorkshiremen but he struggled with the RP and overannounciated. Its quite a painful performance sometimes.

    I really don't see that.

I know it's a silly sequence but I have to admit that, more than all the "homages" in DAD, I do find it a genuinely guilty pleasure. Arnold's music makes it quite sweet aswell IMO.

I thought he was good but I agree his accent does slip on occasions "James Bond, her majesty's loyal te-rrier" - you can pretty much hear his northern accent.

You may be right it tends to get lost with all the other bobbing turds of DAD but on the few occasions I do see it - my mouth drops open in disbelief.

DAD is like the Total Wipeout of Bond films. Once you overcome one limb breaking piece of crap another comes barrelling towards you.

I've never been a fan of her Miss Moneypenny but I actually thought that DAD/VRU scene was Miss Bond's best moment in the role. It was certainly better than the finale we got a few seconds later between Bond and Jinx.

In that one exchange ("James...Monneypenny") you can tell that Brosnan and Bond enjoy working with one-another.

We'll have to disagree, i'm afraid. The lack of chemistry between Bond and Brosnan was only part of the problem. I don't recall that being wrote in TEJB, but then that was the opinion of Pfeiffer and/or Worrall, which they are entitled to.

An the VR scene in DAD, cringe inducingly awful.

Talking of Bond film rankings, though not the IMDB...

Not bad but not enough votes to count as definitive.

  • The character was nearly ruined beyond repair by that sordid grappling with Pierce on the table in DAD. It was allude dont show for thirty years but once again Tamahori gets it wrong.

I'm surprised - I assumed the writers wrote that scene when they wrote the script. So Tamahori came up with it and insisted that it be filmed? First I've heard of that. Source?

  • Also, as much as I loved Dalton I'd have to concede that he likely wouldn't have won over the audiences like Brosnan did. A crucial test for me was that none of the girls around my age liked Dalton or found him attractive except for a few "artsy" girls (and some women I knew who were over, say, 35). Whereas every girl I knew, even 16 year olds, went gaga for Pierce.

a while back, just for my own personal amusement (and because i had nothing better to do).. i took the ratings of each Bond film as rated on IMDB, and averaged them with MI6's ratings of the Bond films.. to see where the chips would fall so to speak... and this is what i came up with...

    Goldfinger - average rating - 8.9
    Casino Royale - average rating - 8.5
From Russia With Love - average rating - 8.1
    Goldeneye - average rating - 8.1
    Thunderball - average rating - 8.0
    Dr. No - average rating - 7.9
The Spy Who Loved Me - average rating - 7.8
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - average rating - 7.5
Live And Let Die - average rating - 7.2
    Octopussy - average rating - 7.2
The Living Daylights - average rating - 7.1
Quantum Of Solace - average rating - 6.9
The World Is Not Enough - average rating - 6.8
For Your Eyes Only - average rating - 6.7
You Only Live Twice - average rating - 6.5
Die Another Day - average rating - 6.5
Licence To Kill - average rating - 6.3
Tomorrow Never Dies - average rating - 6.2
Diamonds Are Forever - average rating - 5.4
    A View To A Kill - average rating - 5.3
    Moonraker - average rating - 5.2
The Man With The Golden Gun - average rating - 5.1

agree or disagree?.... the numbers don't figure in the MI6 Fan Ratings.... if i were forwarded all those totals, i would enter them in as well....

my initial reaction to these numbers when i did this, is that i think it's time the MI6 mods make some corrections to how high the rate Die Another Day.... a 7/10? really? lmao :-))
