Has there been an official announcement on whether or not they will be releasing a Skyfall disc for the Bond 50 collection, or do we just have to buy the Blu Ray and put the disc in the Bond 50 collection? If the latter is the way they are expecting us to obtain the disc, is the print on the disc the same as the Bond 50 collection?

No announcement and the BluRay looks stupid in the set with it's white background. The menus are all completely different (and quite poor) as well. The film looks lovely but the packaging really does disappoint.
  • Arghhhhh currently shaking my head as too why I didn't pre-order the blu ray steelbook edition. Originally pre-ordered ages ago when HMV were doing it but when they were in trouble I cancelled. And never got around to pre-ordering on amazon. An obvious rookie mistake on my part surprisingly as I pre-order dozens of discs online a year.
Spoke to amazon as to the likelihood of more coming in and the news wasn't good as they currently have hundreds of orders for it on backlog they need to clear with any new stock they get.
Already going for crazy money on eBay.

However I did manage to get the documentary everything or nothing for £8 in morrisons.

That documentary isn't getting my money not after the screwjob they gave us.

Anyway, the quality of the blu ray is friggin' amazing. I mean, you can actually see the hairs inside Craig's ear holes.

Damn - My OCD couldn't cope with a white disc in the set :p. I'm hoping they don't screw us and actually release a proper disc for the set, otherwise they will ruin the set IMO.

I am so jealous! I have been looking for them in stores, but will probably have to go on Amazon (I don't buy things that way though). I am re-watching them all now, and am up to The Hounds of Baskerville that I will watch tonight. And after seeing them all 3+ times at this point, this show is one of my favorites of all time, without a doubt. Every time I complete the two seasons I just want to go back and relive it all again. The episodes themselves are so layered that you pick up something new each and every time you watch that you didn't spot on previously viewings, and Benedict and Martin were born to play these roles. Their chemistry is by and far the greatest in history, and in my opinion they are the best Sherlock and Watson yet, respectively. It is just so satisfying to see a Sherlock that is not only empathetic, sympathetic and overall caring in general to those he holds close, but he is also dynamic! As the show has gone on he has changed too as John, Irene and even Moriarty have come into his life, and have either tested him or showed him the value in friendship/companionship. The shows have some of the greatest Sherlock moments ever, both funny and touching in a mix with writing that astounds me every single time a character speaks. Obviously, I could gush about it for hours, and can't think of anything I didn't end up liking about them.

And to think, when my friend first told me that BBC made a present day Sherlock series my first thought was: "BLASPHEMY! THAT'LL NEVER WORK!" And now, I can't imagine my life without it! :)

I had to buy it from Amazon as well, it comes in a fancy box and will look good in my "new digs". I think it's time to revive the Sherlock Holmes thread!
  • Does anyone else's DVD pause briefly before Bond says "I do hope that wasn't for me" ? It's the one that comes with the Blu-ray.

If you have Blu ray, why are you watching the DVD version?

All feature films on DVD are now in "dual layer format" which allows the DVD to contain 8.5GB of data as opposed to 4.7GB. That pause is the result of the player switching layers on the disc.

Certain DVD players (and Blu-Ray players) usually don't have the pause, but if your DVD player is on the cheap side or slightly older, then you will notice that momentary pause.

Bottom line: it is normal. Your disc is not defective.

Ok thanks, I was playing it on my Xbox so probably the latter.

@doubleoego I don't have my Blu-ray player with me at the moment.

That also happens to me, in SF and in anothers (Attack of the Clones, I remember). Thank you for the explanation. My DVD is a bit old so it makes sense.

I just got back from the tiny grocery store a few steps from where I live. I was gettng some emergency food supplies before sitting down for evening's entertainment. I have lived here since 2006 and because the little store is so close I visit it often. I have never ever seen a single dvd sold there. Not once. Now, I barely got inside and what is the first thing that greets me? A Bond stand, that's what - with SF as well as CR and QOS. Totally amazed, I just stood and stared for a bit and grabbed the first SF copy I could get and stared some more, grinning. Then I put the dvd back, and - still grinning - did my grocery shopping and got back home.

    It's amazing. :D

I picked up the Steelbook from Amazon and it looks great. Hats off to Amazon for their Steelbook packaging, it was first class!

Indeed. It's beautiful and the packaging was great. I had ordered some other stuff as well that even though ordered a day later arrived in the same box. When I got it delivered I immediately noticed a dent on the side of the cardboard box and thought to myself "everyone in there, please be alright" - and they were. Everything secured with plenty of paper so nothing could move around, and the Steelbook even had its own special cardboard box inside the bigger box. Fab.

Just listening to Sam Mendes' brilliant commentary for Skyfall, during the scene where Bond overpowers Silva's henchmen, he says that he had to work hard to make the rapid shooting look seamless because he doesn't like "random cuts or jump cuts". Oh, where were you Mr Mendes when QOS was Greenlit?

It's a shame that the DVD doesn't have the commentary. Each day I feel more lagged without blu ray.

I think it's the way to go. I haven't bought BR disks before because I thought the difference in price was probably not worth the difference in quality. Now I see it's completely different! Moreover BR players are getting cheaper and cheaper. I bought mine a few months ago for around 60€ and it works great.

The DVD edition in Sweden contains 2 discs. The second disc is the same disc that followed the Bond 50 box. The disc contains some videoblogs, "The World Of Bond" and "Being James Bond".

Mendes' commentary is amazing, very insightful and makes me nervous about subsequent directors taking on the job. Mendes' input on the script and his directorial choices are inspiring and I hope that he comes back for Bond 24.

I hate to ask this, but I must... did everyone see the exact same movie at home than at the theatre? (I don't mean quality-wise.) Watching on dvd I could have sworn a couple very short bits in a couple of places were slightly different. I saw it 8 times in theatre, the last time just some, oh, two weeks ago, and at couple of places now I just went WHAT? ... watched the same bit again, and still could have sworn it was different. Disorientating and confusing. It is of course possible that my head is just going completely with all the Skyfall craziness and I'll be taken to some looney bin any day now. I hope they at least have a huge tv set and a br player there...

    I KNOW! :((
All the extras are on br only, and I really, really want to hear Sam's commentary. I could listen to him all day anyway, and I know it's interesting and insightful and an absolute joy to listen to even without hearing a minute of it.
I so need to get to hear it. I have the br disc, just nothing to watch it with (and nor do friends). :((

Just watched it tonight, no change from me still no. 2 thoroughly enjoyed it and it doesn't feel it's running time at all. Anyone considering the the jump to Blu shouldn't hesitate it looks stunning, dare I say the best looking Bond Blu ray yet.

Not checked out the extras yet, most looking forward to Mendes commentary, incidently Everything Or Nothing is currently showing on Sky Movies Premiere in HD, need to get to see this again only seen via a kind member here on Youtube back in October last year.

  • Can't believe how many sellers are putting the Skyfall Steelbook up for auction on Ebay and some at such crazy prices. There are so many cynical mercenaries out there that have denied true fans the opportunity to buy from Amazon at a fair price just so they can make a nice tidy profit. Thankfully I managed to pre-order mine on Amazon before they sold out and it should arrive hopefully tomorrow or Thursday. Great looking collectable and I can't wait to own my first James Bond movie on Blu-ray.

Many suspect it to be one of the biggest selling films of the year, so I wouldn't put it past Skyfall to top that list.

How well did The Avengers do?

No idea but I'm sure @Gustav or @Suivez will be here soon enough with diagrams, bar graphs and pie charts.

Hm, I'm the one that keep on saying all these box office figures should be taken with a 10% pinch of salt, I'm not the one making reports about "300,000,167$ !" :), so don't expect list but... pie charts and diagrams are more interesting indeed, as the impact of a 10% error is more intuitive (while, in a ranking, you can go up and down many ranks)

For instance, soon we'll have such diagrams for SF (this one is for CR) : % of attendance of CR in European countries (with US as a comparison). Iceland seems to beat GreatBritain for CR for good, but I think GB will be #1 for SF :)

    189723casino.jpg

Apart from that, to summarize it, Skyfall had a spectacular success in Europe, and the Avengers had a spectacular success in America (North & South), and both did not succeed to "break through" in the East above about #10 status.

A random example : Avengers did about 6 times more than Skyfall in Mexico, while in several European countries SF is undisputed #1. It means for instance Mexico is almost enough for the Avengers to get back what it "lost" in the UK compared to Skyfall !

A good opportunity to remind that just one $ figure basically tells nothing :) [For instance, outside the UK, TDKR beats SF, and outside the USA, SF beats TDKR, but both comments are actually meaningless...]

Really? Now that is taking the piss. That disc was shocking in the first place. The idea that they are still trying to palm it off on people who havent got Bluray rather than give them a disc with the proper extras on is cynical in the extreme.

^^ A moment soon after their arrival on Silva's Island.

A moment or two during the enquiry.

Nobody else has said a word, so possibly it's just my head being unreliable. Early dementia or something. I'd go and see it another time in theatre if it was possible, but it's gone, for good I presume.

I doubt it's dementia; memories are extremely unreliable and even more so for movies. In another thread I talked of a study that showed how easy it was to plant false memories in someone's head of a movie that they had already seen. When it's a movie that you're excited about, you sometimes replay things in your head and there are slight differences that then become the "real" memory of what you (think that you) saw.

Quite. Does anyone remember the discussion about Dolly in MR a while back? A number of us were convinced shes used to wear braces on her teeth back in the days of MR being on ITV on boxing day. So convinced were we that we actually considered they might have been digitally removed for the UE DVDs!

That actually makes more sense to me than something just edited differently or shown from a different perspective, or something minor that I'd not consciously think about or have any memory of (- not something I would have been thinking about, or been able to answer anything about had anyone asked). Plus I saw the film so many times so recently, which makes it even more weird. But never mind, at least this was a new experience. *shrug*
