    Sean Connery as 007
    1. Goldfinger (1962)- putting it first fixes the odd gap in the SPECTRE timeline
    2. Dr. No (1963)
    3. From Russia with Love (1964)
    4. Thunderball (1965)

    George Lazenby as 007
    5. You Only Live Twice (1967)- fresh Bond in the role would be a lot better than Connery's old-hat, lazy performance
    6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
    7. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

    Roger Moore as 007
    8. Live and Let Die (1973)
    9. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)

    Pierce Brosnan as 007
    19. GoldenEye (1995)
    20. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
    21. The World is not Enough (1999)
    22. Die Another Day (2002)- fix to be less campy and corny; make the second half follow the first half better in consistency
    23. Nightfire (2004)
    24. Everything or Nothing (2006)
    25. Casino Royale (2008)

    Daniel Craig as 007

    I know this is 'your ultimate timeline', but I've seen Lazenby mentioned for You Only Live Twice a few times now. There's just no way he could possibly be Bond before 1969. He just plain wasn't around then! 8-}

    Not nitpicking- just an observation that people may not have considered

    I must say at the outset I am not a fan of Roger Moore, so my timeline omits him and take the series in a different direction. In this timeline there will still be bad / bloated films, as it is just unrealistic to expect 20+ world beating films in a row..so:

    Sean Connery as 007
    1. Dr No (1962)
    2. From Russia With Love (1963)
    3. Goldfinger (1964)
    4. Thunderball (1965)
    5. You Only Live Twice (1967) Not a big fan of this film or Connery by this stage but, as has been said elsewhere Lazenby wasn't yet on anyone's radar, and I want OHMSS as it is. Even if Moore was on this timeline, I wouldn't let him anywhere near that film.

    All of the above are pretty much as we know them.

    George Lazenby as 007
    6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
    7. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

    Both of the above are directed by Peter Hunt. DAF is more of a revenge flick with Telly Savalas returning as Blofeld.

    At this point audiences are still not sure about Lazenby and the more muted style. So producers to with adding more humour, but ultimately decide to take the series even grittier and close to Fleming, but bring back Terence Young to break in a new, more intense Bond...leading to

    Oliver Reed as 007
    8. Moonraker (1973) A straight, Fleming-esque adaptation of the book, with a gritty, seasoned James Bond. This ends up one of the top 3-4 films in the entire series.
    9. Live and Let Die (1974) Blaxpolitation is still popular at this time, and producers want to cash in on the success of Moonraker by playing more to US audiences. Director: Peter Hunt (the success of Moonraker and the new Bond leads to revisionist history where Lazenby is held responsible, not Peter Hunt, for the relative failure of his tenure). Hunt is given one last go-around..his final contribution to the series. Finally box office success for him.
    10. The Man With The Golden Gun (1977) As in the Moore timeline, this film does not quite live up to expectations, and Ollie's private life is starting to get in the way a little. Director: Lewis Gilbert
    11. The Spy Who Loved Me 1979) Steven Spielberg's Bond film and, sadly, it is a disaster. After the failure of TMWTGG, and with Ollie's life really starting to go off the rails, this film is even more overblown than in our current timeline; with a fat, disinterested, fast aging actor playing Bond, and production team desperate to compete with the new era of blockbuster, and with Speilberg over-emboldened by the success of his last two efforts. This is TSWLM in name only and more akin to Die Another Day. Ollie is fired, and a new, younger, fitter and more focused Bond is hired. Ollie's tenure has produced two classics, one mediocre film, and a disaster. Steven Spielberg now has this, not 1941, as the stain on his reputation, and in seeking to prove that he can produce a lean, on budget action flick, and a better 'Bond' film than he managed. he goes off to do a little film called Raiders of the Lost Ark. His timeline and reputation are restored thereafter.

    Timothy Dalton as 007
    12. For Your Eyes Only (1981) - the film we know, but with a better Bond and no parrot talking to Thatcher. Director: John Glen
    13. The Living Daylights (1983) - now the producers have the new Bond established, they start to tailor the scripts to him, leading to a film we are all familiar with, just earlier (and with less Moore-like puns). Natassia Kinski as Kara Milovy. John Glen returns. The momentum of two excellent scripts in a row cements Dalton (along with the previous Bond now having a private life that leads no-one to mourn his loss in the role) as more widely loved than in our timeline.
    14. From A View To A kill (1986) - Dalton is influential in pushing for longer between Bond films, both out of concern for the quality of the scripts to remain high, and to allow him more time to work in theatre and on other projects between 007 assignments. John Glen moves on, leaving this original tale in the hands of Robert Zemekis, as he is now Hollywood's hot thing after the previous year's Back To The Future. The first sign that Bond is now following, not leading trends. Lea Thompson impresses as a Bond girl though.
    15. Licence to Kill (1989) - After the success of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard, and with the popularity of Miami Vice on TV, Richard Donner and John McTiernan are both offered the reins on Bond 15. Both decline to work on sequels to their respective series (that way we get a decent Die Hard 2!), leaving Bond producers to go for the Miami Vice creator Michael Mann as helmer. It is his big break (in terms of public recognition) as he directs largely the film we know, but with far less of a TV feel, and a clutch of very strong performances. This is the first Bond film to be Oscar nominated in acting and script categories.

    Interregnum 1989-1995. During which time Dalton quits, Mann (who was ready to direct Bond 16) moves on to other things.

    The Bond series goes on hiatus, leaving producer time to consider their next move. They decide it is time to inject more humour into Bond after a particularly violent and dour last couple of outings. Critical success had never been greater, but grosses were starting to fall away. They go for a personable, little known TV actor (outsid of the USA) who had a modest hit with Lawnmower Man

    Pierce Brosnan as 007
    16. Goldeneye (1995) - exactly as we know it, but with a slightly larger budget, and no Eric Serra.
    17. Tomorrow Never Dies (1998) - Sort of as we know it, but more time taken to get it right and, as he is given more breathing space, Martin Campbell returns. Monica Belluci as Paris Carver, Charles Dance as Elliot Carver
    18. The World is Not Enough (2001) - the personal recommendation of his good friend (from Alien 3) Charles Dance is good enough to get David Fincher to helm Bond 18, fresh of his run of The Game, Seven and Fight Club. This is the modern day OHMSS, but reimagined as a much toucher crime elements. Dr Christine Jones is played by Rene Russo.
    19. Die Another Day (2004) - well, they had to ruin it at some point. Critical darling though TWINE was, it was just a little too dour for the box office, so they decide to take something from the opposition. XXX helmer Rob Cohen is given the reins of Bond 19. Divorced from the 40th anniversary, and with less..Tamahori, this is better than the film we know. It remains, however, bloated, and with a Bond actor past his best.

    Time for reboot. The same year as DAD, a small film called Layer Cake takes the eye of Bond producers. They offer Casino Royale to both star and director of that film: the star accepts, the director declines in order to do X Men 3 (he later drops out of that only to return for First Class). We then get:

    Daniel Craig as 007
    20. Casino Royale (2007) - the film we know, just one year later
    21. Quantum of Solace (2009) - the film we know, with a lot of the same problems due to the race to cash in on the success of Casino Royale. There is less effect caused by the writers strike - though the film was only just completed before MGM hit the skids. The later release means Danny Boyle is able to helm after finishing all duties related to Slumdog Millionaire. So the action is cleaner and the editing better. It is still considered one of the weaker Bond efforts however.
    22. Skyfall (2012)..and here we are.

    So, one less film, no Roger Moore, far more Dalton and a less rushed and by the numbers Brosnan era. We cannot avoids flops and missteps, but they are fewer and farther between and tend to be the pay off for positives elsewhere...e.g. Oliver Reed would have a made a great 007, IMO, but his private life would have affected things at some point.

    Here's the timeline as it actually is, with a few "modifications", of course... ;-)

    Remove -

    Dr No – the countdown in the films climax.

    Thunderball – remove the decade worth of tedious footage of frogmen nailing a sodding net in place.

    You Only Live Twice – remove the countdown in the films climax; remove Helga's double cross; also make the plot similar to Dr No, in that YOLT's plot involves toppling rockets, instead of missiles. I'd hate to lose Ken Adam's amazing set, plus it ties in with Dr No, a complete circle.

    Diamonds Are Forever – Moonbuggy chase; Plenty O' Toole, I can't believe Bond would be interested in someone so dumb; Norman Burton as Leiter; “comedy” policemen; Blofeld in drag

    Live and Let Die – Most of Sheriff Bloody Pepper’s scenes; Mrs Bell scenes

    The Man With The Golden Gun – again Sheriff Pepper’s scenes; two teenage girls defeating an entire dojo; locking Goodnight in a closet while Bond gets groiny is unforgivable; slide whistle sound effects during the Corkscrew jump.

    Moonraker – remove Jaws from the PTS; the entire boat chase and subsequent “Bondola“ travesty; Jaws falling in love with Dolly.

    For Your Eyes Only – Thatcher

    Octopussy- Tarzan yell; the crowds doing a “Wimbledon” during the Tuk-Tuk chase

    A View To A Kill – again the “comedy” Sheriff during the fire engine chase; Beach Boys in the PTS

    The Living Daylights –the monkeys/crowds scenes – a throwback to the Moore era

    GoldenEye – most of Boris’s dialogue, especially when we first meet the Severnaya staff “Slugheads!”; some action scenes need trimming down i.e. tank chase

    The World Is Not Enough – Sir Rog said about cinema acting; your eyebrow moves about 20 feet in the cinema when you're up on screen. I don’t think anyone told Pierce.

    Die Another Day - Madonna cameo; recast Zao; remove the whole CGI débâcle; trimming down the climax; get rid off Graves’ RoboSuit.

    Casino Royale - Sinking house; less is sometimes better - do it like the book

    Quantum of Solace – parachute jump

    These time lines looks like every one as lost the plot. but i will agree with x3msonicx that why did they not make everything or nothing into a film maybe it should of followed on after die another day if Brosnan carried on for one more. The only thing i should add to these time lines is after skyfall they should make risco it would fit in perfect to the current time line
  • I am not saying this is what I wish would happen, but here is one I came up with.

    Connery:
    * Dr. No
    * From Russia With love
    * Goldfinger
    * Thunderball
    * You Only Live Twice

    Lazneby:
    * On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    * Diamonds Are Forever

    Moore:
    * Live and Let Die
    * The Man with the Golden Gun
    * The Spy Who Loved Me
    * Moonraker

    Dalton:
    * For Your Eyes Only
    * The Property of a Lady
    * A View to a Kill

    Brosnan:
    * The Living Daylights
    * Licence to Kill

    Sean Bean:
    * Goldeneye
    * Tommorow Never Dies
    * The World is Not Enough
    * Everything or Nothing

    Craig:
    * Casino Royale
    * Quantum of Solace

    with mostly different Bonds, this would be my one

    Clint Eastwood (In this universe he never played Dirty Harry.)-

    1962-Goldfinger
    1963-Dr No
    1964-From Russia With Love
    1965-Thunderball (Savalas As Blofeld)
    1967-On Her Majesty's Secret Service (Savalas As Blofeld)
    1969-You Only Live Twice (Similar plot to the film but a bit more Faithful to the novel structure., Pleasence as Blofeld, Shatterhand introduced, Irma Bunt returns as Ilse Steppat would have still been alive, and Bond kills Blofeld, he returns after a different ending in OHMSS where Blofeld is disfigured in a Cable Car Crash, then kills Tracy as revenge.)

    James Brolin (Christian Bale look alike.)

    1972-The Man With The Golden Gun (more serious and faithful adaptation)
    1974-Live and Let Die
    1977-The Spy Who Loved Me (An ex member of Spectre, number two at the time of YOLT, instead of Stromberg is the villain.)
    1979-Moonraker (More serious but not faithful to the novel, and Felix Leiter.)
    1981-Licence To Kill
    1983-Diamonds Are Forever (Blofeld Returns!!!!!!!!!!!!!, he doesn't die in You Only Live Twice and returns as revenge on Bond, but Bond finally kills him Locque style, after a car chase.)

    Pierce Brosnan-

    1987-For Your Eyes Only
    1989-Octopussy
    1992-A View To A Kill
    1995-The Living Daylights
    1998-Goldeneye
    2000-The World is Not Enough

    Christian Bale (James Brolin Look Alike.)-

    2004-Tomorrow Never Dies
    2006-Casino Royale
    2008-Die Another Day (Less silly and better film.)
    2010-Risco
    2012-Skyfall

    Ol' Clint was smart not to take the role-- especially as the first Bond actor! Although he did look the part in the early 60's I admit!

    Actually- I remember seeing a fan poster with Lazenby in The Man with the Golden Gun, and they used Clint as Scaramanga! Now that would have been something! I wish I could find it-- they used an image of Dirty Harry holding his 44 but it was tinted gold.

    *edit* I'll tell you one thing: If Clint did play Bond, that would have practically guaranteed Hugh Jackman would have one day played him too, since they look so much alike!

    Goldfinger (1964)
    Thunderball (1965)
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1966)
    Diamonds Are Forever (1967)

    CR would be the first film instead of DN. FRWL Would follow and both would be directed by Terrence Young. GF would be directed by Guy Hamilton as before and Thunderball would be directed by Alfred Hitchcock. You Only Live Twice (1974)
    The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
    Moonraker (1979)
    For Your Eyes Only (1981)

    LALD and TMWTGG would be directed by Guy Hamilton as before. YOLT would be directed by Lewis Gilbert and would follow more closely to the novel. TSWLM would also be directed by Lewis Gilbert, but MR would be directed by John Glen and would follow more closely to the novel. FYEO would be directed by John Glen and would be Lazenby's farwell film.

    Timothy Dalton

    The Living Daylights (1988)
    Licence To Kill (1989)

    Tomorrow Never Dies (1999)
    SkyFall (2002)
    Risico (2003)

    I did have Brolin playing Bond first, but i thought for a while he would have been 30 in 1962, LOL, so I swapped around Eastwood and Brolin, although, I think Eastwood could have handled the role in the 70's and would have aged accordingly, as he did not look too old in the 70's. The two actors I would have loved to see play Bond, and i'm not American.

    Well Clint would have been 32- just like our main man Connery! Both men were born in 1930.

    It's funny, I'm so familiar with the 70's 'Dirty Harry Clint' that I found myself surprised at how much Clint did indeed look very 'James Bond' in the 1960's! If it did go down, it certainly wouldn't have been the worst thing to happen. Clint is a great actor too- and that goes a long way

    Yeah, he's one of those people, that everyone, even some of the plonkers at my school who know nothing about films, know who Clint is.

    I will give it another go, now using actors that never were Bond :

    Gregory Peck ( Yes, it is irrealistc, but it would've been so cool):
    1962 - Dr.No
    1963 - From Russia with Love
    1964 - Goldfinger
    1965 - Thunderball

    Just like the real life movies. Peck's interpretation of Bond would've been similar to Connery's.

    Richard Burton

    1967 - On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    1969 - You Only Live Twice
    1971 - The Man with the Golden Gun

    Burton is my favourite "cloud've been" Bond. His interpretation would be closer to Fleming's Bond. YOLT and Golden Gun would, of course, be faitful to the novels.
    To get a glimpse of what Burton's Bond cloud've been I reccomend that you watch "The Wild Geese"
    Terence Stamp:

    1973 - Live and Let Die
    1975 - The Spy who Loved Me
    1977 - Moonraker
    1979 - Diamonds Are Forever

    He would've been a lighter Bond than Burton, but not very. Moonraker and Diamonds would have respected the core stories of the novels.

    Sam Neill:

    1981 - For Your Eyes Only
    1983 - Octopussy
    1985 - A View to a Kill
    1987 - The Living Daylights
    1989 - Licence to Kill
    1991 - The Property of a Lady

    OP and AVTAK are more serious than their real-life counterparts. LTK would look a bit more like a Bond movie and less like Bond in regular 80's action movie. POAL would be inspired in John Gardner's Licence Renewed

    Sean Bean:

    1995 - Goldeneye
    1997 - Tommorow Never Lies
    1999 - The World is not Enough
    2002 - Fire and Ice

    Goldeneye would've been the same, TNL would be just a little bit more serious, The World is not Enough with a improved script, and Fire and Ice would Die Another Day, but more serious. It would've been more focused in Bond being captive in North Korea.

    Marton Ckoskas

    2006 - Casino Royale
    2008 - Quantum of Solace
    2012 - Skyfall

    Casino Royale and Skyfall stay the same, Quantum of Solace with an improved script.

    Here's an idea: what if the producers filmed the movies in the order of the novels, but they were filmed in the same years and with the same Bond actors as the actual movies were? Here's what it would look like:

    1. Casino Royale (1962)- Sean Connery
    2. Live and Let Die (1963)- Sean Connery
    3. Moonraker (1964)- Sean Connery
    4. Diamonds Are Forever (1965)- Sean Connery
    5. From Russia with Love (1967)- Sean Connery
    6. Dr. No (1969)- George Lazenby
    7. Goldfinger (1971)- Sean Connery
    8. A View to a Kill (1973)- Roger Moore
    9. For Your Eyes Only (1974)- Roger Moore
    10. Quantum of Solace (1977)- Roger Moore
    11. Risico (1979)- Roger Moore
    12. The Hildebrand Rarity (1981)- Roger Moore
    13. Thunderball (1983)- Roger Moore
    14. The Spy Who Loved Me (1985)- Roger Moore
    15. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1987)- Timothy Dalton- gotta love how this would have turned out!!
    16. You Only Live Twice (1989)- Timothy Dalton- And this!!
    17. The Man with the Golden Gun (1995)- Pierce Brosnan
    18. Octopussy (1997)- Pierce Brosnan
    19. The Living Daylights (1999)- Pierce Brosnan
    20. The Property of a Lady (2002)- Pierce Brosnan
    21. 007 in New York (2006)- Daniel Craig

    I would have liked to have seen Lazenby in Diamonds. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the way it is.

    Good idea @00Beast ! I like the potential of some those! I agree, OHMSS in 1987 with Dalton would have worked out great! I wonder who could have been his Tracy? I'm trying to think of a few capable actresses from '87 but I'm having trouble....
    Elizabeth Hurley? Too young probably. Bond's wife should be closer to his age I think

    And it looks like poor George just can't get a movie with any gadgets :D

    RoboBond (1987)

    What if the Sci-Fi action flick Robocop was a non-cannon sequel in the 007 franchise?

    007/RoboBond - Timothy Dalton
    M - Bernard Lee
    Q - Desmond Llyellin
    Clarence Boddicker - Kurtwood Smith
    Anne Lewis -Maud Adams
    Felix Leiter (Replacing Officer Reed ) - Dan Hedison
    Dick Jones - Ronny Cox
  • An odd "what if" universe:

    Connery:
    Everything starts off normally, and Connery still ranks as the "Best Bond" in this universe.

    1962: DR. NO
    1963: FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    1964: GOLDFINGER
    1965: THUNDERBALL
    1967: YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE

    Lazenby:
    Connery leaves the role of James Bond, and hands it to the 29 year old model. Lazenby and his film fail to the public eye, as he calls it quits after only one movie.

    1969: ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

    John Gavin:
    After Lazenby departs from the role, American actor John Gavin steps into the shoes of James Bond. Gavin fare even worse than Lazenby, baffling audiences with an American in the role. Like Lazenby, Gavin leaves after only one film. It seems as if the Bond franchise is dead.

    1971: DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

    Moore:
    It seemed as if the Bond franchise was doomed, until famous British actor Roger Moore lands the role of Bond. Moore proves to be a big success, doing five films.

    1973: LIVE AND LET DIE
    1974: THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
    1977: THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    1979: MOONRAKER
    1981: FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

    James Brolin:
    After Moore's departure in 1981, EON tries again with an American actor in the role of Bond. Brolin fares better than Gavin, but only winds up doing two films, neither of which were major hits at the box office.

    1983: OCTOPUSSY
    1985: FROM A VIEW TO A KILL

    Brosnan:
    With the Bond franchise in peril again, popular actor Pierce Brosnan is strongly considered for the role in 1987. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Brosnan cannot play the part of Bond. Keen on making money, EON waits another year for Brosnan to be available. Both of his films were major hits, but due to legal actions being taken, Bond is forced back into retirement for five years.

    1988: THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    1990: LICENCE TO KILL

    Sean Bean:
    After a hiatus, the Bond franchise is revived in 1995, with actor Sean Bean landing the role of Bond. Bean goes on to do four films, all which are popular at the box office.

    1995: GOLDENEYE
    1997: TOMORROW NEVER LIES
    1999: THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
    2002: DIE ANOTHER DAY

    Hugh Jackman:
    Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman wins the role of James Bond for 2006's reboot CASINO ROYALE. Jackman proves popular, and does another film in 2008. Due to financial issues, Bond is briefly put on hitayus, but returns in 2012, as Jackman is set to play Bond for two more films.

    2006: CASINO ROYALE
    2008: QUANTUM OF SOLACE
    2012: SKYFALL
    2014: THE PROPERTY OF A LADY
    2016: RISICO
