I didn't know it hit $23 million already. Of course, someone will be along shortly to shoot you down and tell you you're wrong. I don't care anymore - I'll check the final numbers in a few weeks, and let this thread die down.

Another update of the 'Spy/Action Movies-list'. As of January 6th 2013, 'Skyfall' surpassed that other succesful film from 2008, 'The Dark Knight'! Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' got rave reviews and was prone to some unexpected media buzz. Something that is happening to 'Skyfall' now as well.

Also interesting to notice....'Skyfall' is bound to enter the TOP 10 of the 'All Time Worldwide Box Office Grosses Ever'-list from BoxOfficeMojo.com. 'Alice In Wonderland' ($1,024.3 Billion) and 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace' ($1,027.0 Billion) will be beaten by 'Skyfall' upcoming week.

Next stop for 'Skyfall' to become the first ever Bond film to enter this exclusive TOP 10 ranking will be 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' ($1,043.9 Billion). Then the following stops until 'The Dark Knight Rises' ($1,081.0 Billion) will be 'Toy Story 3' ($1,063.2 Billion) and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' ($1,066.2 Billion).

Note for the reader: Take in mind that for, more or less, accurate comparisons, most of the below action/spy movies are produced in 1987 or later. Actually, most of them were produced after the 1990's. All movies in this list are 2D movies!

Furthermore, I have updated the list in such a way now, so that you can also use it as a 'watchlist'. Movies with a '▪' are part of a spy/actionhero movie franchise. Movies with a '▫' are rebooted movies or remakes. Movies with a '∞' are based on previous tv-series.

Could Skyfall be sitting pretty at fifth place in the all time list when all is said abnd done? It will at least be in seventh place. How crazy is that?

Now more than ever Bond's future seems safe in the hands of people who know what to do and how to do it.

If that new figure is fact? That would be astonishing with China still to come? :-O

Yeah, it's real. In the next two weeks Thunderball will be number two. China will help us beat Batman for what looks like a $1.1 billion total.

Yes................the $1023 million figure should be correct, as International BO figures are added to the totals on Sundays!

Wow! :O Well i for one am over the moon about the success of this movie! Not only for the producers and Daniel himself ofcourse. But for the charactor of Bond himself! Countless film review shows, Newspapers, Pundits......etc. Used to say bye Bond as we have a more realistic hero now, alot grittier and all the rest of it. Whether it's Bourne, MI and so on. Skyfall is a big one in the eye for all of them! And i for one could not be prouder! :D

It's not about competitions, it's about displaying Bond's success. It's called putting it in context. :)

Given Brady tore everyone a new one for suggesting it might trump TDKR I was curious to see why he thought the all time BO was any different.
  • I just looked it up and TDKR is 7th on the list now, so to get that spot Bond would have to beat it.
  • Flipping Norma! At this rate, they should hold back the UK release of the DVD until the start of April.

I wish it had stuck around a few more weeks in the US, but I know that more films are releasing since January is now upon us. It may still be out in the US, I just know that my local Alamo Drafthouse has already pulled it.

@thelivingroyale, so everyone is saying that SF is currently the 8th highest grossing film of all time now, or am I misunderstanding you all? If so: wow.

Seems my cinema in Southend's pulling out too. But the one in Basildon's still showing it five times a day!

I thought the cinemas around here pulled movies on Thursdays, but it looks like they went ahead and did it early with SF.
  • It seems not to be the case in Essex, England.

I don't care anymore - I'll check the final numbers in a few weeks, and let this thread die down.
Hm, more than a few weeks I think, even when SF career is over, ranking aficionados will be tracking Hobbit box office in China to see where the figures end :) If 3D is as popular in China as experts claim it is (or is it a side effect of the technical 'anti-piracy' it means ?), it may well do a nice result over there, who knows ?

Also, one more Bond-related argument to give another example why I think reasoning in terms of global rankings is meaningless :

Here lots of people write "Don't bring back Spectre or Blofeld, Austin Powers killed it".
    But, in fact :
In the USA, in 1997, Powers did almost twice more than Bond, right. Outside ? It did 2 times less.
In the USA, in 2002, Powers did more than Bond ok. Outside the USA it did 4 times less.
So Powers is clearly IMO a Americano-centric phenomenom. Can we really say it killed Blofeld for the franchise as a whole ?
If you want to be big in China, an "apolitical terrorist" big baddie that is not communist can be interesting for the producers to please most of the markets :)

Could Skyfall be sitting pretty at fifth place in the all time list when all is said abnd done? It will at least be in seventh place. How crazy is that?

Now more than ever Bond's future seems safe in the hands of people who know what to do and how to do it.

It would be perfect. Not just 7th place, but 007th place. ;)

I thought it didn't matter about competition between films?

I am not promoting BO competition. @Samuel said it could make 7th place, and I just added that if it happen then it would ironically be at 007th place, fitting for the series. But whether it is 13th, 10th, 7th or whathaveyou, I will be no less proud of it for not banking more or for trumping Batman. That's not important. It doesn't matter to me, as I am over the roof at all the success it has, and happy that everything has gone swimmingly.

    With China, we'll beat TDKR!

Well, TDKR opens in China a few weeks after SKYFALL, so any lead may be short lived. I'm willing to bet there is more of an audience for Bond in China than there is for Batman though.

Why is TDKR opening this late in China?

I'm curious as to what China will end up preferring: TDKR or SF. I'm guessing the latter.

Plus, they've had much more time to bootleg TDKR, it's already released on BRAY!

Are you positive TDKR is yet to open in China?
According to this, it opened in China last August and did over $52m at the BO there...

So everything you said about TDKR was a mix up?
