    FRWL is number 3 on my favourite list (behind CR and OHMSS) but I would say there's a strong argument that it's the "best" film of the series. The thing is with 22 films over almost 50 years there's such a range of styles and types that I wouldn't feel right saying that anything is the "best", so I always talk about "favourites".

    From Russia With Love still remains my #1 Bond film..

    great direction
    great acting
    some terrific action pieces
    and knockout for a Bond girl
    good score.....

    .. but most importantly...

    IT HAD SUSPENSE!!

    haserot - what's interesting to me is that I had watched the classic Bond films so many times as a kid that they stopped being "stories" as such for me. What's cool now is that I can look at them with fresh eyes.

    I saw FRWL at a rep cinema a while back and was really impressed with the plot. Great, great story. Even more interesting was GF. It was really eye-opening to hear some audience members asking each other "What the hell...?" when suddenly you see all these Asian people in Switzerland. I was so used to the film that it hadn't occurred to me how unusal that plot development must have been for people first watching the film!

    this movie is best Connery movie IMO it is classic and for me if there is Bond movie that want to be succesful should have some elements as FRWL.Definitely this movie deserve appreciation thread (or there is already one? )

    i instantly fell in love with From Russia With Love when I was young and first starting to get into the Bond franchise - from the opening PTS, where you think Bond is being killed, only it to be a SPECTRE training exercise, with an (unfortunate) operative wearing a Bond mask - and then on to the sexy credits, with Barry's masterful instrumental....

    Red Grant was (and still is) the perfect villain for me... he is every bit 007's equal, and stalks him through the entire movie, coldly killing off his associates, but also keeping him alive - so that he can ultimately put him to rest himself.... whenever i think of Grant, I think of him watching 007 from on board the train - his reflection in the window, as Bond tells one of Karim's sons that their father was dead..... and i can't say enough about their fight - dare i say, ahead of it's time?... as a child of the late 80s and 90s, I was used to seeing overly stylized fights in cinema by this point.. but their fight was intense and brutal - and i ate it up - every frame lol..

    my love affair with From Russia With Love has as much to do about the story as well, as with the atmosphere that the movie created... it didn't feel as "fun" as Goldfinger - and not as cheesy at times as Dr. No.... it felt more serious and intense - and i think a lot of that had to do with Grant stalking 007, but also because the whole plot was to set up Bond in a trap, so that SPECTRE could get their hands on the lektor decoder... and as the movie progressed, it felt like Bond was playing right into their hands, and you wondered how he was going to get out alive - especially being held at gun point - then Bond's trusty briefcase came to the rescue :) lol......

    there is no other way i can describe the film - it's the perfect Bond movie in my opinion... Casino Royale came close to that mark, but fell just short..

    Nice choice for a favorite, TRUSTNO1! My favorite is GoldenEye, due to its amazing action, dark qualities not found in other Bond movies except LTK, terrific performance by Pierce Brosnan as his debut 007, excellent villains (Alec Trevelyan, General Ourumov, Xenia Onatopp, Boris Grishenko), a great soundtrack, and a refreshing pace that isn't boring slow or too rushed. As for FRWL, it stands around five, six, or seven for me, but I'm considering moving it up a few spots.

    Welcome @TRUSTNO1. You sure know how to whip up a great thread and infuse it with a thought provoking opening post.

    However on this occassion I'm going to move it from News to Bond Movies. Call me picky. ;-)

    Watched FRWL again last night and was reminded of Connery's magnetism and cruelty. Watch his eyes, his face, his gestures. He is quite compelling as Bond. You rarely catch him "acting." I am intriqued by how he "uses" things and discards them with contempt. Recall how he throws off the scuba mask in the Goldfinger pre-title sequence. FRWL may well be his best performance as Bond.

    I just watched FRWL, and i thought it was an amazing movie. I may see that in this movie, what it lacked in action it had compensated in story. It could have not so many action like GE, or GE, But it is a great movie. In my own "analysis", FRWL was based on the Ian Fleming's book, not to make a complete action movie like the nowadays Bonds.

    Connery acted very well imo, and i got some laughs with his quotes and scenes too. My favourite was the Lektor's description being sent to M's office. One of the best scenes i've seen and that probably will be on the list after i see all Bond movies.

    And then, now i may understand why there are some people on the MI6 Community that hates the FRWL game. I played it before seeing the movie, and i really am disappointed with EA. The game has invented plots and even mixed the story out, and now actually i don't like that game so much at all. The movie is a classic, shouldn't be changed as they did back at 2005.

    Now may i see Dr No. Maybe this week i'll see it, i'm having a good free time.
