Here they stand and which death did you feel the most? Sad? Shock? who left the least impact on you? Like to hear your comments.
DN Quarrell
FRWL Kerim Bey
GF Masterson sisters
TB Paula
YOLT Aki
OHMSS His blond headed contact (can't recalll the name)
DAF Plenty O'Toole (why?)
LALD Rosie Carver
TMWTGG Andrea Anders
TSWLM ??
MR Corinne
FYEO Luigi Ferrare
OP Vejay
AVTAK Godfrey Tippett
TLD Saunders
LTK Della Leiter, Sharkey, Kwang and Associates (pick one or two)
GE ??
TND Paris Carver
TWINE Valentine
DAD ??
CR Solange
QoS Mathias
SF Severine

for me it was the death of Aki in YOLT that left quite an impact. Never saw it coming. Tilley Masterson was also a shock
Less impact: Rosie Carver, Valentine, Plenty O'Toole (never understood why she was killed and thanks to the cutting room her scenes were cut down and we never connected with this tart.

FRWL Kerim Bey, he was a great character and sadly did die in real life as well shortly after the filming ended, which adds some extra dimension imho.

Add M mate. That's the only death that actually made tears form in my eyes.

Kerim Bay, Aki and René Mathis for me.
  • I found myself affected by Vesper's death, and one of the deaths towards the end of Skyfall affected me. Quarrel and Kerim Bey were tough deaths to take, too.

funny enough i was the same..after viewing SF for the first time all i could think of the next few days was Ms death.
  • Mathis in QoS.

Especially after all he had to go through when he was set up by Le Chiffre to look like an MI6 traitor. He gets imprisoned, tortured, released into retirement and then rejoins Bond in the field, only to die - thanks to his colonel 'friend' in Bolivia. I felt bad for him and his death caught me by surprise.

Forgot all about that one, but I agree; I thought that death carried quite a punch, too.

As that was already being telegraphed throughout the whole movie, which was perhaps due to poor writing by the various screenwriters and/or director it did lose some impact.

That said I will miss her performance.

Mathis' death scene is by far the best in the series for me. Him dying in Bond's arms and his last words about forgiveness with a moodier rendition of Vesper's theme playing was heart breaking. He was such a great character, the best ally since Kerim and Draco and then Bond dumping his body in a nearby dumpster. Damn, being a spy is a grim job.

I would not count Vesper as a "sacrificial lamb". Her death was key to the narrative. A lamb is a throw away character that is there to keep the brutal realism intact with the films. Solange is the "lamb" for CR. IMHO...

So you're thinking of characters more along the lines of Ms. Fields in Quantum than really folks like Kerim (who's death was pretty central to moving that plot forward a bit, I thought)?

I forgot to mention Agent Fields from QoS. She was a very likable character and I hated to see her killed off so quick. we had more of a 'bond" and connedtion to Rene Mathis and his death was more of an impact, not to mention the way he died. All the stuff he had gone thru between the two films and to forgive Bond and have no hard feelings.

For shock value and sheer Bond anger I would say

    Saunders

Bonds anger at his purposeless death blew the screen away.

Mathis for surprise and for the girls I always thought Andrea's was quite sad. She had a miserable couple of years with Scaramanga and didn't escape him in the end despite all the effort she put in.

I am beginning to think those who think this don't know a good script from a bad script.

I thought of Saunders, too. Just as he really becomes a likeable character he gets the chop.

I guess that death doesn't really fit the OP's criteria, though.

Well the script of SF is a decent script, neither good or bad. It has its moments but it also lacks some smartness occasionaly. M's impending death was not a great surprise for anybody, even my wife who is no 007 fan by any measure mentioned pretty early on in the movie that it was pretty obvious who was going to die. Only Severins came as a surprise, not her demise but the way it happened.

I don't think SF had a bad script but I did see Ms death coming. That's not really the scripts fault though, I predicted it before I even saw the film, I knew it was Dench's last, I knew she was a big part of the story and I knew there was a big hook so I put two and two together easily.

Tracy was sad but not suprising. Mainly because I'd seen films after OHMSS where he didn't have a wife and I knew he wasn't going to retire.

Most suprising for me were Zukofsky, Kerim Saunders and Mathis.
  • Tracy's by far is the saddest, most-impactful. However, I don't know if she qualifies as sacrificial lamb according to what this thread addresses. But she is to me.

M's is also pretty epic, but might all under the same category.

Otherwise, Kerim for sure. A great character (and great performance) whom you grow to love as the story progresses.

Other honorable mentions would be Mathis and Aki.

Corinne in Moonraker. That was fairly chilling.
Sharky in LTK. 'Complements of Sharky,' was satisfying.
Fields in QoS. The description of how she died made it very harsh.

I found Henderson's death quite despairing in YOLT, I could tell Bond and him were gonna be real friends. Sadly he was killed too soon. :)

Same goes for Achille Aubergine, who would have made a great team with Moore in AVTAK. Oh well, another missed opportunity...

  • A toss-up between Aki and Veejay. Both very lovable characters and they certainly don't die painlessly...at least Aki's death was quick.
I'm sure a lot of fans will want to strangle me for saying this, but I'm actually kind of happy that M is gone and we're headed in a new direction. Judi Dench is a wonderful actress and her contribution to the Bond series was huge. But did anyone get tired of the banter between her and Craig in both CR and QOS? I got so sick of hearing her use the word TRUST. "This is about trust." "I need to know I can trust you." "He's my agent and I trust him." BLAH BLAH BLAH. Plus, this is the second film (TWINE being the first) in which the villain is exacting revenge on M.
Don't get me wrong, I felt a lump in my throat at the end of SF when she gasped her last breath, but I'm quite glad that things are changing at Mi6.
Am I the only one who feels this way???

    Kerim, Campbell and Mathis.
I don't know but I can't see Tracy, Vesper o M as sacrificial lambs. They are real victims.

you are spot on. Judi will be missed but it was time to move on. I applaud Babs and Mikey for pushing the envelop with Craig films. they were so cautious and afraid to cut loose during the final 3 Brosnan films.
the shakeup at MI6 is a good thing. I look forward to seeing more of the new Q, Eve Moneypenny, and Gareth Mallory as the New M

I completely agree with you. It was sad when she died but at least we can finally move on from boring trust issues and M being a big part of the story.
