  • I know this is a forum and there will be clashes of opinion, but Moore in License to Kill would never have worked, and the same goes for Daylights also. Moore made a real mess of things for his View to a Kill swansong and should of stepped down after For Your Eyes Only, and not only that, James Bond would of been in his 60's by the time of 1989 !

I agree with you about everything except Moore retiring with FYEO. He was spot on in Octopussy and it would've made a perfect swansong for Sir Rog.
  • one post away from a milestone 1000th post @DoubleOhhSeven.. Always a special time for any participant

Yes, Moore was good in Octopussy, the interrogation of Orlov on the train, talking about Major Dexter Smythe with Octopussy, the seriousness of the bomb threat at the circus event etc, being such examples, but the fact of the matter is, Moore was simply too old for the part by then, and all that nonsense humor too, it just was a real pity when you add it all up

Moore was a decent Bond, could be serious, but was simply not needed for the most part after 1981, despite being serious here and there, but any action bits and pieces went from implausible to ridiculous. I refer mainly to View to a Kill rather than Octopussy, but we can argue all we like, but Moore should of stepped down after For Your Eyes Only

I honestly think Moore would've been better from '62 to '89, not Connery.

But I wouldn't lose the Connery classics for anything. Anything.

Can anyone identify Mollaka's phone from CR? It looks like an early Nokia- pre 2006, but I guess it would have to be an Ericsson because of contracts, right? Here are some close-ups of it:

  • My girlfriend and I just finished watching Licence to Kill (bless her, she loves Dalton as much as I do) and she noticed something. It started when we were laughing at the hideous fish sculpture that was right in Bond's face when he woke up at Sanchez' mansion.
Then with the 'winking fish' at the very end it dawned on us: was the city having a 'he's dead' party at Sanchez' mansion??? :O That is as morbid as it is awesome!!!

I seriously think that's what they were doing!

<center>As a matter of fact, I think that warrants a brand new 'Dalton' meme!!

I was watching LALD earlier this day, and i came across something i have thought of for a very long time and that is, what is it about Baron Samedi towards the end? When he rises from the grave, Bond shoots him or a clone in the head so he falls together. Like if he was made of plastic or something. What was that, and what was the purpose of the " clone "? It was as they already knew that Bond whould have shoot him. And how could it even live?

    Well, I've looked on this
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/aidanwojtas/2109523579/sizes/o/in/photostream/
and I couldn't find it. So I don't think it will be a Nokia. I've had a look on http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3 but again couldn't find a Nokia or Sony Ericsson on it. It maybe too modern as the phone looks old even for 2006 standards. Have a look on http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3 if you now any more information about it. I also Googled any relevant search terms but couldn't find anything, just things about Bond's phone and some parts on the other characters phones. Sorry I couldn't help any further. Why did you want to know what it was? Was it for some fan art?

    @Ben

Thanks for taking the time to look for me. Much appreciated. I'm interested in making some replica props, including the phones Bond and other major characters use. I've managed to find the other Ericsson phones for a decent price- except for the fingerprint scanner obviously, as it was made for the film- although there's a similar looking one for sale. I'm just having trouble finding this one phone. I'm tempted to say it's also a one-off made for CR- but I happened to stumble across a picture of it a while back, and now I can't find it. Anyway, thanks again for your help. :)

Edit: Found it. It's an Ericsson R600.

I stumbled upon one on ebay. Mission accomplished ;)
  • Here's a question following a recent viewing of Moonraker: when Bond first arrives in Rio, he's being chauffeured around and catches a glimpse of Manuela taking his photograph, he says something not in English-- anyone know what he said? It was as if he was talking to himself too

You know, I haven't really every thought of this, I just kind of passed it up honestly. However, you raise a very interesting point here! I believe the Baron Samedi decoy was used in an event that if anything ever went wrong, the real Baron did not have to be present for the ceremony to be endangered. Then again, perhaps that statue/clone thingy IS actually the real Baron Samedi that the voodoo creeps "worship", and the human Baron that we see in much of the movie is just an imitator trying to scare people away. Well in fact, yes, because Dr. Kananga confirms Bond's suspicions about Samedi being there to scare away any thieves from looting Kananga's poppy fields. Ehhh....it's a rather complex theory actually! Leave it to Guy Hamilton, who always seems to leave us with PLENTY of questions and plot holes.

Could EoN buy the rights to the James Bond theme? Because it's being used less and less these days. (Skyfall had it used a bit) but it seems like it's about to disappear, is Monty Norman over charging to use it?
  • edited November 2012 Posts: 72
@Murdock: I don't think so. I think that the less use of the Bond theme in the last movies was purely a decision made by the composers. I remember that in Casino Royale, David Arnold said that he only used the Bond theme in the end, because that was the scene where James became Bond. No clue for QoS, though. However, I think that Skyfall had a fairly good use of the Bond theme.

    Now, on to my question:

I've never understood why in the titles sequences after Cubby's death it appears " Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions presents...". Shouldn't it be " Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman's EON Productions presents..." After all, EON was also founded by Saltzman...

Harry had to sell his shares after facing financial troubles, so his name was pretty much rescinded from what I understand.

Sean Connery has said that From Russia with Love was his favorite Bond performance tho other reports say Thunderball and Roger Moore has said that The Spy Who Loved Me was his favorite performance. But what was Daltons, Brosnans, and Craigs favorite performance as Bond?

    Does anyone know?

Of themselves? If that's the case Brosnan's is GoldenEye, and Craig is Skyfall as I understand. Dalton, he would probably mention a Fleming novel, but in the modesty there's greatness.
  • In OHMSS, is the casino where Bond and Tracy met indeed Casino Royale, like in the novel? I always wondered about it whenever I watch the film, but it is never directly implied in a single scene that the place is called as such. Are there any clues or proofs for this question?
  • While flicking through the extras on the Thunderball DVD in the featurette Patrick MacNee talks about scenes where Auger and Celi's real voices were used. Also there is the scene after Bond comes out of the shark pool he says something about 'the one that got away' instead 'better luck next time'.
I have never in all my time ever scene a version of the movie with any of those scenes with the real actors voices.
Does anyone know if there are versions either on DVD or VHS out there.. with the original scenes in them ?
MacNee hints that there is.Especially video.
Also such a real pity that the scene with Bond getting shown around the Disco Volante is lost.
That would have been great to see.

Has it ever been determined as to actually who owns the rights to SPECTRE? Or does that remain a legal gray area because of the ambiguity as to whether Fleming or McClory created it?

And another question: how did Eon get away with the opening of FYEO? Is it because he almost but didn't quite have enough of Blofeld's characteristics?

@Creasy47 just brought an interesting question to my attention about CR and QoS, and it got me thinking too on another aspect of the films. We are trying to figure out the timeframe between CR and QoS. @Creasy says that there is a fundraiser ticket for Greene's event that has a 2008 on it in QoS. This is interesting, because I (and I am sure many others) thought that Bond got White not long after he speaks with M near the end of CR. But what if it took him 2 years to find White, explaining why we are in the year 2008 in QoS? Since QoS picks up directly after CR's last scene and the former is in 2008, I think it would be possible for Bond to spend 2 years trying to find White and trying to get Vesper out of his head. This also makes it apparent that Mathis was sweated out by MI6 a lot longer than we first believed for his so called "double-dealing". This also means Bond has been a 00 much longer than we had thought, now adding on 2 years to his service for the gap, if it is true.

And that poses another question I have, now that we are on the topic of Mathis. What with the writer's strike and a script that was all but put together at times, I wonder: Was Mathis always supposed to be innocent of the accused crime, or was it just thrown in there to get him in the film and working with Bond again? It is something I have wondered...

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7, the questioning of Mathis' innocence is something I would enjoy figuring out, as well. Even with my theory about the time difference between Vesper's death and White's capture, what if it was just a goof that they put 2008 on the ticket, and the events at the end of CR and the beginning of QoS just kind of happened, and it should have read 2006 or something on the ticket?

Okay, after seeing Thunderball for the first time in a long time today, many questions came to me. Great film, but damn do some moments make absolutely no sense.

    A few that bugged me:

*Bond punches Felix when he is about to say 007 because he doesn't want the man hiding in the bathroom waiting for him to hear. Bond then goes into the bathroom, punches the henchguy, and then says 007 out loud while the man is completely conscious, blowing his own cover and basically punching Felix for nothing. And Largo knows he is MI6 anyway, so why would Bond give a toss if a "small fish" knew?

*Is Domino called that because the two moles on her left thigh look like a domino piece? This one doesn't bug me, just one I thought about and wanted to include.

*When Bond Fiona turns on Bond after their rumble in the sheets she reveals she is a villainess (which I think he always knew and just slept with her because she offered) and he says him sleeping with her was only for KING and country. Since Elizabeth was crowned in 1954, what gives?

*When bond is with Domino on the beach (after he gets the poison sucked out of her foot) she begins to talk about Angelo while crying, and apologizes to Bond by saying "I didn't mean to embarrass you, speaking of love." I'm sorry, but what the hell does she mean?

*When Bond and Felix are in the helicopter as Bond is about to dive into the water to look for the camouflaged NATO ship he and Felix exchange these words:

James Bond: [donning the underwater jet pack] ... and the kitchen sink.

Felix Leiter: On you, anything looks good.

Why is Felix randomly giving him a complement? Are they just that great of pals that it is just a nice gentlemanly gesture between mates? I mean, Felix is right, because Sean did look great in anything up to the entire tenure he had going as 007, so I can't fault him on that statement. Though, it does feel out of place and random, hence why it sticks out to me every time I see it. I must say, Felix in this film is a tad peculiar and way more conspicuous that I remember him being previously or thereafter, or at least seems to be. Anyway, I digress...just a little observation I am probably thinking too far into.

*At the start of the film Bond wants the symbol he saw on Count Lippe's arm analyzed and Moneypenny tells him that the man who can do that is out. Bond says "Moneypenny, I'll put you across my knee", and she says "On yogurt and lemon juice?" Bond follows it up with "I can hardly wait!" I think I have seen this one answered on here before, but I can't recall what that line was referring to.

*Vargas is teased a little by being a man who doesn't drink, smoke or make love by Largo, but he says we all have our hobbies. Were they trying to allude to homosexuality there? Does Fleming's novel shed any light on this a la Rosa Klebb? Just curious and another thing I noticed but didn't bug me like some of the others I listed above.

I fear even Sherlock himself would fall into self-doubt over some of these...

We know her real name is Dominetta Petacchi/Vitali (novel) and Dominique Derval (film). It might be a bit of a stretch to say the nickname 'Domino' also came about because of her thigh moles, however it wouldn't be unlike Fleming to give a character a physical trait to link with their nick/name.
*When Bond and Felix are in the helicopter as Bond is about to dive into the water to look for the camouflaged NATO ship he and Felix exchange these words:

James Bond: [donning the underwater jet pack] ... and the kitchen sink.

I agree it was always a tad weird hearing Felix say that. Not something I would say to another guy as a compliment, but perhaps jokingly, if we were good mates. Or just maybe, Felix had succumbed to Bond's magnetism!
*At the start of the film Bond wants the symbol he saw on Count Lippe's arm analyzed and Moneypenny tells him that the man who can do that is out. Have a look at this thread, where Moneypenny's line "On yoghurt and lemon juice? I can hardly wait!" is discussed:

My thoughts mirror those of @Agent005's comments, after the original post:
