References to other movies in Bond

We all know the Hitchcock references in FRWL. I spotted references to Nick Roeg's Don't Look Now in CR. Any others you can think of? I reckon the train banter in CR is actually another reference to NBNW.

    NBNW = North by NorthWest???

If that is the case I do not see that.
  • Moonraker obviously acknowledges Close Encounters of the Third Kind with the theme being played

I just hope Skyfall doesn't make reference to Justin Bieber: The Movie ;)

Where's the Don't Look Now reference?

Edit: Of course Venice, dressed in red, drowning...duh

Me neither. The only connection is that they take place on trains.
  • I don't have much time to spare but surely we can include the Enter The Dragon acknowledgements for Golden Gun. Kung-Fu was as big at the time as Star Wars was towards the end of the decade and it's blatantly obvious the middle part was a direct nod to the martial arts movie the year before it. Thankfully for Bond, it was only a one off

I don't see any direct reference in Casino Royale from Don't Look Now. Yes, both movies have time spent in Venice, and the color red is briefly relevant, and I can just about remember the little girl drowning towards the beginning, and then you have the Eva Green character, but I can't look beyond it's merely a coincidence and nothing more

There's plenty of other examples to explore here doubtless, but for another time

There is absolutely no way that Cambell is not referencing Don't Look Now in the final scenes where Bond follows Vesper through the streets of Venice. It is very very obvious and a nice sinister touch IMO. The scene presages death, which is highly appropriate and 100% intentional. These kinds of things do not simply occur by coincidence.

The train scene in CR references NBNW IMO simply because it's a sizzling chat up scene on a train. The reference is not as direct as it is with Don't Look Now, but it will have been in the writers' and director's minds. Everyone knows and loves the scene in NBNW, so to try and capture a little of that chemistry would have been the intention. I think it works well. One of the best parts of the film.

Another Time Another Place - a 1958 movie starring Sean Connery and Lana Turner - is referenced by the man himself in TB.

The hall of mirrors in TMWTGG is definitely a ref to another film as I remember seeing it and making the connection. But can't remember which film it was....

Think it's a ref to "The Lady from Shanghai".
  • Not a specific reference but more of a general observation, but dare I say the comic relief of the Tarzan call in Octopussy? ;)

Or may be it's Enter the Dragon...

Close Encounters got a reference in MR didn't it?

    EDIT: It's already been posted.

    Two more:

    Dr. Zhivago in TSWLM

    My Fair Lady in AVTAK

And of course, GF in OHMSS

    Exactly.

Of course, if we take the 167 version of Casino Royale, then, we get a lot of references to other movies : Born Free, What's New Pussycat, Moulin Rouge, the Keystone Cops, etc.

But I sustain that is not necessary GF, those 3 notes belong also to Moon River.

I think it's a ref to both films. Lady of Shanghai came first as well.

  • Isn't Octopussy and the chase through the jungle a reference to The Most Dangerous Game?

    Yes! :)

  • I'd say Licence to Kill takes a page from Miami Vice in tone and subject matter (Miami as location, rougher than before, south-american drugsdealers, baggy clothes)

Interesting. Never heard of that film before.

Is more of a short story than a film (though has been adapted). The person getting chased gets three hours on a jungle island and some rich madman hunts him. It was parodied in The Simpsons halloween special when Mr Burns hunts Springfield men

I see there is a 1930s film version with May West.

TMWTGG has a strong Most Dangerous Game vibe to it. Does the novel?
  • edited October 2012 Posts: 5,774
No. There, it's Bond who does the chasing. But there is a reference to those old movies where a buxom heroine is tied to a train tracks by a mustachioed villain.

And The Most Dangerous Game is a great movie. "First the hunt, then the revels.

    "

Only if you don't take into account the notes that preceed those three notes. There, you'll see that the janitor really whistles the theme from GF.

And OP has a pretty big musical reference to all the other Bond movies as well.

I'm suprised no one's brought up the blatant ones like the grave at the beginning of FYEO tying Moore's Bond to Tracy, and the marriage line in LTK.

These are films outside of the Bond franchises that are referenced in the franchise itself.
