Irony And Bond

  • I suggest P & W take a gun and feel the weight difference when it has a full magazine and an empty one. And I would advise the quickest way to empty the magazine for this experiment would be for them to put the gun their temples and pull the trigger.

Brilliant. Best thing I've read all day.

Maybe Miranda replaced it with a dummy clip of the same weight.

You see, everything in DAD can be explained! :-\"

    Is that a challenge?

Not to restart this part, but I think M_Balje could have meant a viper (not vesper).

Was it a viper that attacks the mongoose in the beginning at the shantytown? If so, I guess it kinda sounds like Vesper...

It always peeves me that Bond is an enthusiast on many things, including guns, yet doesn't know the difference between a loaded and unloaded gun in DAD.

James Bond does know the difference beween a loaded gun and an unloaded one - it is part of being a total professional in a job where his life is on the line if he makes a mistake.

The problem here is that P & W and Tamahori dont know the difference between writing a James Bond film and churning out cinematic diarrhoea. Actually Babs and MGW can take some blame here also as there is no way that the fact the magazine is empty and Bond doesnt realise should have got past the first draft before being pulled up as utter bollocks.

I suggest P & W take a gun and feel the weight difference when it has a full magazine and an empty one. And I would advise the quickest way to empty the magazine for this experiment would be for them to put the gun their temples and pull the trigger.

Another appalling moment in DAD which gets overlooked amongst all the others - possibly the worst as it makes Bond look like an amateur.

Another excellent post. Problem is Pand W seem to have some kind of stranglehold on EON.

How did P and W even get involved with the Bond crew and EoN productions?

Their story outline for The World Is Not Enough is what got them hired. On paper it was great, on film, not so much.

Christ alone knows. Have you seen their CV pre Bond? To say its lacklustre is something of an understatement. Every jobbing writer who knocks out the odd episode of Hollyoaks or Holby City must think they have a chance of getting handed Bond. I just dont understand how they walked into such a massive gig as Bond on the strength of such distinctly average films as Let Him Have It and Plunket and Maclean.

    Presumably they are quite cheap.

No I have not. I really wish Barbara and Michael would axe them from the pay roll and hire some writers who can write a engaging thriller without all the unexplained plotholes and idiocy's such as how Bond can't tell how his P99 is empty. TWINE was okay because they Had Bruce Feirstein helping out on the script. DAD was a mediocre fanfiction and Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace had Paul Haggis saving their hides. I'm thankful that Skyfall is making use of Peter Morgan (who's big hook is essential to the film) and John Logan. Maybe Skyfall will evoke some changes to this department in the future. Here's hoping. [-O<

I can't even offer an opinion about this pair because of the uncertainty behind their involvement in the scriptwriting on the Bond films. Yes, most of their scripts aren't too good, but I enjoy both CR and QoS plenty. But how much was them, and how much did Haggis play script doctor to? Until I know the truth, I can never be sure how I feel about the both of them.

Well they are the sole credited writers for DAD so I think therein lies your answer.

My favorite example of irony in the Bond franchise is in DN when the hearse that was tailing Bond goes over the cliff, the construction worker asks where they were going, & Connery says "I think they were on their way to a funeral." I also like the line in LTK "compliments of sharkie" when one of the shark wranglers gets shot with a harpoon gun (not only Bond's ally's name but also an ironic reversal of fortune for man and shark). Also in LTK Bond meets M at the "Hemingway House" & after M revokes Bond's license to kill 007 says "I guess this is 'A Farewell to Arms'." One in LTK that always makes me laugh is when Bond comes in to give Felix the knife and says "time to cut the cake" and shortly thereafter Felix says (Of Della) "She must be ready to kill me". I also like that bit in LALD where Bond's other ally gets killed and carted away (unbeknownst to Bond and Felix) and Felix sees the procession and remarks " Hell of a sendoff!"

    Responding to old discussion here.

The novelization gives the simple answer that Frost messed with the firing pin. The handgun would function and feel the same including its weight, until an actual attempt to fire a shot.

Irony, or at least an amusing set-up or play on words.

Hmm. Well, there's OO7 in Spectre bringing down Blofeld's chopper by defaulting to the iconic (but tiny) Walther PPK in a combination of finding the chink in the dragon's armor or for the want of a nail sort of unforeseen weakness.

Many of these “ironies” are actually coincidences.

Yes a very loose net cast.

I just complimented my daughter on her correct use of the word literally. She pointed out to me its current meaning allows what I thought was the opposite of that.

in a literal manner or sense; exactly.

Yes, that's a word that has been modified over the years to fit the times. I had an editor some years ago call me on the use of that word the right way. It happens.

I'm aware of language changing over time, for pronunciations and definitions.

But that one was literally crazy. Choose your meaning.
