    It will probably go onto Paramount Plus after it's PVOD release... I wouldn't be surprised if they kept it for a Christmas marketing push.

    They dug themselves quite a hole by making them basically interchangeable. They'd done the female thief bit way back in MI2, and getting rid of Ilsa in the first one, they basically transferred her skills to Grace, who largely disappears for a lot of FR.

    Ferguson wanted out. Doesn't mean they had to kill her character though. Ultimately I am not an Ilsa super-fan like some are so aren't overly fussed. I thought Grace was a fine enough character in DRP1 but as you say, her character is basically washed away in TFR.

    I can't help but feel like her part was intended for Ilsa in The Final Reckoning, or at least her purpose in the story. Once Ferguson wanted out it seems like they amalgamated the two characters. I liked Grace a lot in Dead Reckoning and could accept Ilsa's fate, and Grace's nervousness throughout the train finale is excellent. Suddenly, in The Final Reckoning, she's more like a seasoned agent, and the bits about her character I found compelling in Part 1 are more or less gone.

    Yeah, the first film has her more of a central character and the idea of how you become an IMF agent, but that all feels very much dropped for the second film and she's just kind of there, and perhaps slightly weirdly obsessed with Ethan too (especially considering her scepticism about him in the last film). Likewise the story of Ethan's backstory with Gabriel is just dropped too- and that was going to tie into the story of how Ethan joined the IMF too.

    Generally speaking I'm not a fan of the whole "The Choice" thing because it was introduced so late and seems to breed some anachronisms within the internal lore of previous entries (especially with Benji). Nevertheless, if they were committed to exploring Ethan's backstory within "The Choice" and the history with Gabriel, I could swallow some gentle retconning but that's another bit that seemed to get dropped.

    I suppose it could be argued that Cruise/McQuarrie bit off more than they could chew with the ambition of a two-part story. I know the pandemic and Barbenheimer didn't help matters, but structuring a "part two" to a film that introduced so many new things and ended up underperforming was never going to be easy.

    Yeah I didn't love 'the choice' either; suddenly they're all a load of misfits who previously were criminals? Feels a bit out of nowhere and a bit of a retcon; although oddly fits slightly better with the TV series, where all of the IMF agents seemed to have other careers and would kind of help out the IMF part time, as if the IMF had something over them.

    With a decade or so I would love to see a relatively stripped down MI, with Cruise. Of course there would be some action and maybe even a “ money “ sequence, but especially it would be a serious spy drama with high, real world, stakes.

    After watching Final Reckoning I really can't see why they thought this story needed six hours.

    Why spend so much of that time going on about how great Ethan is?

    Why hint at a (bloody awful) backstory only to completely abandon it?

    Did they recruit the CIA guy to the team and neither they or his CIA colleages never acknowledge it or did I miss something?

    Why tack on an eternity of the characters smiling at each other in public?

    How will the Bond producers possibly compete with this masterpiece?

    Feels like yesterday critics of the Craig films were boasting about how Tom Cruise was gonna show Eon how it’s done, and then those last two M:I films managed to do less box office than NTTD.

    Yeah, I don’t think Amazon needs to be concerned about M:I stealing Bond’s thunder.

    I think MI always does less box office than Bond, doesn’t it? I might be wrong. But up until now the budget has always been lower too, but this pair ballooned.

    Yeah, there was also an assumption that the enormous success of TOP GUN: MAVERICK would basically trickle down to DEAD RECKONING. That didn’t quite work out.
