Onward. It's been a while since Denis and I have crossed paths but I look forward to asking him about visiting the set.

    Set your expectations for 2028!
  • Very exciting choice, this will definitely be quite a production. Not into Dune at all so I’m glad he’s back on something more appealing to me.

So, what’s the over/under on Roger Deakins returning to the series?

If Mendes gets him for the Beatles event you can count him out. Even then, Deakins had already turned down returning due to not wanting to “repeat” himself.

    We’ll probably get Greig Fraser.
  • Greig Fraser would be great. Hopefully the filming won’t conflict with Batman Part II though because I’d like him to be able to do both.

My hopes are high for Villeneuve, maybe he's able of keeping the influence of Fleming into a Bond film, as his Dune films proved to be closer to the books.

I’m intrigued! I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen of Villeneuve - I’m a bit more confident in this film at least. It’s still weird not having Barbara Broccoli making this sort of announcement but I have faith in Pascal and Heyman.

Wow! What's pleasant surprise to log on today and find official news. Damn! :D. I still haven't seen anything he's done, but will be tracking down that BLADE RUNNER sequel ASAP.

Personally, the choice of Denis Villeneuve doesn't make me feel particularly optimistic or pessimistic. I just don't know if I really love the idea of big-name directors consistently getting the gig now. From what I've seen he's obviously talented, but I'm not convinced he'll make the kind of Bond film I hope for. It's nice to at least see the wheels are turning for Bond 26.

But at least he is a 007 fan who grew up on Connery.

I wonder where Denis Villeneuve stands on the placement of the gunbarrel? :D

I think the days of hiring a no name director or just finding someone cheap within Eon like John Glen are long past us.

And thank goodness, the last thing I want Bond to return to is the meat and potatoes plainness of John Glen.

I actually think Bond 26 is not the time to take a risk on an unknown, relatively or otherwise. With Pascal and Heyman now leading the franchise after Barbara and Michael’s tenure, there’s a real opportunity, and pressure, to deliver the best possible Bond film that can stand out in today’s blockbuster landscape.

Denis Villeneuve is one of the most visionary directors working today. His track record shows he can handle epic scale and complex characters with nuance, which feels like a perfect fit for Bond’s evolving world. So while it’s great to champion new talent, for a tentpole like Bond 26, especially during this big transition, going with a seasoned, respected filmmaker makes sense.

I had a feeling an announcement was coming. Villeneuve is a great choice. I know he loves making slow burn films, but he's already expressed how big a James Bond fan he is, so he should know what makes James Bond work. Plus, one thing is certain....with Villeneuve, Bond 26 is going to look visually stunning!

I liked John Glen, so to each their own. I'm more concerned about them trying too hard to make James Bond high art rather than having too much "plainness" which I think could be rather refreshing in some ways after all the personal drama of the Craig movies - this coming from someone that really likes most of the Craig movies. Movies aren't really made like that anymore, though, I guess. Villeneuve said all the right things regarding getting the job, but I remain skeptical until I see and hear more.

That's how I feel about Purvis and Wade coming back. Let's move forward from their "plainness" screenplays.

I certainly don't want P&W back. Too many recycled themes and ideas in their work ultimately. For whatever it's worth, I'd still much rather take my chances on Villeneuve than Nolan of the oft-rumored / oft-desired big-name directors. And as @Denbigh pointed out, it's logical to not take a risk at the director position for Bond 26, being the big, transitionary film that it is. But after Sam Mendes and now this, I'm concerned it could become a trend to just pick big names for the sake of it.

I think there's a better chance of Sean Connery being resurrected and returning as Bond than Purvis and Wade, TBH.

I have a hunch B26 may have a completely different look and feel to the other Bonds. Perhaps even a new format? Should we be open to no gunbarrel, Bond theme, titles sequence, etc ?
Maybe we'll get the first ever ending post credits scene in a Bond. A very popular trend these days?

Nevertheless I'm very excited by today's news.

Amazon are definitely going to keep the gunbarrel, Bond theme, title song, title sequence, etc. They want to make us as happy as they can, because they know we didn't trust them earlier. The only thing is, the look of the film is definitely going to be very ultra-modern...which is a great thing.

With all the talk of honoring the legacy of Eon’s franchise, I’ll be shocked if they don’t try to make it feel like a continuation in terms of franchising. Even while Craig films have bent the rules they still felt very Eon.

I must say that makes me feel better. :) This was my biggest concern regarding Amazon.

Yes. With all the changes in Craig's Bond era, it still was very Bond.

Haha! I don't think they would want to self-destruct anything. I think a member once said Amazon have seen that the Bond franchise isn't some cheesy Netflix spy spoof.

I have to say this is quite unexpected news. I didn’t think we’d be getting director news for a while yet.
I’m not fully across Denis Villeneuve work, but from what I have seen I have no concerns. Especially knowing his personal love of the series.

I wonder if this will silence the naysayers who complain at the lack of news… being no better off than we were with EON or such like.
    I live in hope. 8-|
