Before Vivendi dropped the license to Robert Ludlum's Bourne series, Radical Entertainment was at work on a multiplayer-focused game known as Treadstone. Thanks to a discovery by Superannuation, we now know what the game looked like prior to being canceled.

While it's not the prettiest looking game around -- which is to be expected for a several-year-old game that was never finished -- it does look like it had some fun mechanics. Pushing a cart while blind-firing, jumping into and out of windows, and leaping onto cars from rooftops all looks fairly entertaining.

Superannuation also pointed out a blog that was posted last month talking about development of the game. Along with posting some screenshots (including the one below), Christopher Scott Hassell said that after he finished working on Prototype in 2008, he "moved onto a new project helping to build a new team and new game. We went on to create an action adventure playable game demo in the spy genre based around the Treadstone mythology. In less than a year while developing a new engine and building a new team we delivered an 'open neighborhood' playable demo with cover based gunplay, vehicles and parkour style platforming and movement."

Hassell cites several reasons for the game's cancellation, which came after the Activision and Vivendi merger. "Activision said the game looked great but needed to turn into somethign [sic] else," he said. "They expressed their decision with the fact they already had the James Bond Franchise and stated several other decision points based around the IP and the games potential returns."

The last Bourne game to be released was The Bourne Conspiracy in 2008. EA has since acquired the license. "EA came in the strongest, had the best take on the property, and they know how to grow the IP and have unquestioned worldwide market reach," Ludlum estate rep Keith Boesky said at the time. "We're dealing with grown ups now."

Starbreeze began work on a Bourne title shortly after which has since been canceled.

Strange that another Bourne game never came to fruition. I'm sure there might have been some interest from gamers. Interesting reading though. I've never given much thought to another Bourne game and seeing how close they actually came to having one developed was fun.

I hated The Bourne Conspiracy when I first played it, but it's since grown on me. So I think it's a shame that another Bourne game got cancelled, though if it was a multiplayer only game, I doubt i'd have bought it. But if EA own the licence, there could be a chance they'll make thier own Bourne game.

It looks good, a shame it never happened. The first one I don't believe was successful enough for another. Though maybe the upcoming film will spark interest again.

Well i remember buying 'The Bourne Conspiracy' as one of my first 360 games, played it and had a great time, though some 'boss battles' got repetitive and a bit boring at times.
Still i would have bought a second game:/

That's a shame. That video doesn't look too bad to me. I would have played it.

That looks cool. Too bad it was never made. Maybe after the next one is made they'll pick this game back up.

why does the map/health bar on the left look eerily similar to Blood Stone's?....

were Blood Stone and the Bourne games made using the same engine?

I don't think it's the fault of the teams making the games, but monopolies like Activision and EA. Activision is clearing shop of a lot of games to get all their attention of MW3. The same stupid formula yet again.
