After OHMSS, the films got... sort of silly.
So this is weird... how do you rank them? Lack of silly? On serious moments?
I'm gonna just go with most watched to least for me:
DAF
TMWTGG
LALD
NSNA
FYEO
OP
AVTAK/TSWLM
MR

I like to think that MR is the 'odd one' that some Bond fans, myself included, appreciate for its technical merits, despite being a nonsensical film from start to finish. Its travelogue qualities, marvellous visual effects and delightful score add up to a film worth revisiting, even if it doesn't quite register as a full-blood Bond film.

I liked it because the villain is great (Hugo Drax), Holly Goodhead also proved to be Bond's 'real' equal, and I think Moore was a lot more comfortable with the role here, he's a lot more reactive, had more facial expressions, and his performance comes off as more natural, he's not stiff or acting through the motions, which I felt he did a bit in TSWLM.

    Agreed @DarthDimi.

I have a bit of a love/hate thing going with MR and as I’ve posted on various threads over the years, I do find MR a perfect movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon when I don’t want to think too hard. Lots of eye candy and Barry’s score is top notch elevate it, but as for plot...

That said, when I pulled up my spreadsheet which contains my various Bond rankings, I was surprised at just how high I had placed it. Upon some reflection, there are good reasons for that, but the film does suffer a from a certain degree of “excess” that I really have to be in just the right mood for. TSWLM (despite being a worse film in one very important aspect), is better balanced IMO.

I was 19 when it came out, and I had to see it as a Bond fan, but my eyes were rolling through most of the last third... at least the popcorn was good....

I always said MR is basically TSWLM better made. No Barbara Bach trying to act in a dramatic scene? Huge improvement!

That was my "one very important aspect" (Chiles > Bach) :D

No Barbara Bach trying to act in a dramatic scene?

A reminder of why the two best Bond films feature actresses who could act.

So many Bond actresses seemed to have been afflicted with a condition in which their beauty resulted in acting paralysis.

I never found Bach offensively bad in her acting, to be honest.

Not when Lois Chiles can barely stay awake during any scene.

I would love to have been in on that casting decision. "Here's what we're looking for. An actress who's as wooden as her voice is monotone."

But let's be honest, think whatever you want to think about the actresses, but Holly Goodhead is a lot more tough, competent and more believable as an agent more than Anya.

She's literally Bond's equal, Anya? I look at her as Solitaire just turned Russian 😅, she may not be dumb, but she's pretty passive.

Does anyone really want the Bond Girl to be "Bond's Equal"? No thanks. Give me passive, if that is the alternative.
