My biggest “who cares?” is cigarettes. That was more common in the novels and 60s films. Aside from two cigars, Roger Moore’s Bond never smoked a cigarettes. Did that make him less Bondian? Dalton briefly brought back the cigs but like his tenure that ended abruptly Yet with Dalton they also deemphasized Bond’s womanizing. Did that make him a lesser Bond? Did Brosnan and Craig never lighting a cig ruin the sanctity of the character?

In order to change Bond dramatically from his roots, they would have to go as far as turn him into Captain America.

There has been no cigarette-smoking Bond since then because people became more reasonable and aware of the risks of smoking since then. I think that, upon a re-start of the franchise, one would find a way to leave this aspect out. If that happens, no-one will remember within a few years that a sizable part of the population smoked cigarettes. Or else, one might think of Bond telling a chain-smoking Bond Girl after a round of kissing, "You taste as if I'd been licking out an ashtray." That'll do the job.

Although I'd love to see James Bond having a cigarette outside a pub on a Saturday night flirting with a Bond girl whose with her friends and turns out to have a boyfriend.

What point would be served by such a scene?

Damn, that would've been great, but maybe Bond carrying it with him here kinda suggests he thinks he won't be returning home.

It would've led to Youtube spoofs with the old Hamlet cigar ad music coming in just as he sparked up, I guess, but still... ;)

Similar to that of Gala Brand at the end of Moonraker novel?

In answer to my own question about what defines Generation Z.

In summary, a typical Gen Zer is a self-driver who deeply cares about others, strives for a diverse community, is highly collaborative and social, values flexibility, relevance, authenticity and non-hierarchical leadership, and, while dismayed about inherited issues like climate change, has a pragmatic attitude about the work that has to be done to address those issues. https://news.stanford.edu/2022/01/03/know-gen-z.

How will these characteristics (in addition to those described in the full article) differentiate the next Bond from DC?

That’s already too old. It would be like if we had Daniel Craig do the macarena in CR, or have Dalton hitting the dance floor to disco.

With the time that passes between whatever is filmed and when the film is released, any included trends will already be "not in" anymore :P

First generation Bond fans will likely live long enough to see the beginning of the next actor’s run, but most of them probably won’t see how it ends.

The simple truth is that Bond needs Gen Z to survive.

I'd guess we all probably got into the Bond films when we were teenagers? I know that I did. The thought of Halle Berry coming out of the water and the Aston Martin Vanquish in DAD got me drooling when I was 11. Audiences who are now 11 or 12 were just being born when SF came out.

It's an accepted truth that EON need to entice younger audiences to the franchise, whilst also satisfying older fans. I'm 32 now, so they don't need to worry about selling a ticket to me or my generation. We grew up with the Daniel Craig films and are invested in what the next era of Bond will look like. However, you need to give younger audiences (who have time and disposal cash) to turn up to the cinema.

You need Gen Z to get intrigued by a younger leading man, younger Bond girls, sexy locations, etc. It might be a turn-off to fans to think of a Bond film capitulating to Gen Z, but remember Gen Z will be old some day and if the franchise dosen't reinvent now it could loose an entire generation of potential ticket buyers for decades to come.

Eon need to figure out what what new direction they can take to please existing fans and excite new fans...Personally, if the films went back to being more lighthearted then I'd be disappointed. I would hope Eon look at a show like Euphoria and think about that kind of style. Hell, why not even hire Sam Levinson to write the script. I'd dig this kind of aesthetic for Bond 26:

It would be interesting to see a Bond with perhaps a more stylised look, I wonder if they'd consider it. A bit like how perhaps Glass Onion had quite a consistent aesthetic to its costume design.

I think no matter what, James Bond will survive every future generation. Even some of the classic text and film is still highly regarded by today’s generations. It’s how they do it to learn from their mistakes and successes. As EON’s films always say, James Bond will return. It’s just a matter of where, when and who’s in charge.

At risk of digging up an old thread - and indeed topic of discussion - I do wonder how much the Producers will be thinking about this and what form 'appealing to Get Z' will take. I'm in my mid 20s btw, so a little out of that generation, but not by much. I have noticed there's been a tendency on these forums to come up with pretty standard ideas. I've heard the phrase 'Instagram Luxury' thrown about a lot (I still have no idea what it means), 'high tech' technology, 'more sex', 'escapism', and suggestions such as casting an actor in their early 20s to play Bond. All sound like something people over the age of 40 would suggest quite frankly. It makes about as much sense as saying Bond should be more 'woke'.

    I'm available.

Thank you! A example of what I’m also saying is that if something is truly classic, it will be discovered by future generations. I have a coworker who watched Hogan’s Heroes, and she enjoyed it. She’s not even 20 years old! If that can happen to something that ended decades ago, then something that’s been going on for decades will TRULY survive. James Bond will always have fans of all ages. Not many fictional characters can say that for so long.

You speculate, and poorly, while we "first generation Bond fans" already have lived long enough to see people fail to accomplish simple math and simultaneously fail to possess a rudimentary understanding of lifespans. Barring something unusual, most of us will see the next Bond all the way through, assuming even the longest of Bond-actor timespans occurs again. Good luck to you.

If Eon goes back to the sausage factory of delivering a film every year, sure. But at this pace? May take half a century or less.

Here’s to Bond 30 coming out in 2062!
