  • New details of Christopher Nolan's next project! Sounds interesting, plus Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer sounds like inspired casting to me. However, I was a little disheartened by this news as I understand Cary Fukunaga was developing a similar project (I'm rooting for that guy). Is that right @peter ?

The only WW II film he's developing at the moment is called NOBLE ASSASSIN which is about a French aristocrat trained by British Special Forces to become an anti-Nazi saboteur.

He has about ten new projects in development that includes just writing, or just producing, as well as doing all three.

But if he was doing a similar project as Nolan's it may now be on the backburner.
  • Despite the disappoint of Tenet, I'm greatly looking forward to Nolan's Oppenheimer film. My first instinct was picturing Christian Bale in the role, but Cillian Murphy sounds like an excellent fit!

I'm still laughing at the PERFECT joke stated above...that TENET is a film ahead of its time...hello ? Is this microphone working ? Brilliant !

He’s already made the Oppenheimer film. It’s entropy has been reversed and is currently tunnelling its way back through the timestream to be released in cinemas.

Indeed ! In fact, I am quite certain -- though only in the vaguest way (yeah, a Nolan-ism) that I saw his Oppenheimer film, backwards in the future, so I remember nothing about it presently.

Cillian Murphy is set to play J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, releasing in July 2023:

Perhaps it's wise for Nolan to take this route. I'm looking forward to seeing this film.

New trailer has landed for Oppenheimer and it looks special. The cinematography and look is really giving me First Man vibes. Apparently word on the Nolan forums is that he has finished the movie and it has been seen by cast and crew already. Nonetheless the film is not out until next summer. We have heard the ATJ rumours and know that Nolan has worked with him before on Tenet......I'm probably putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5, but could we finally be about to see a Christopher Nolan-directed Bond film?

A return to form for Nolan, I'm hoping. His last few films haven't done it for me. I feel like the way he shoots things will suit a meaty biographical film like this. You can feel the weight of the story from the trailer alone.

Is it wrong that I want this to happen? Cause I really do. Even though I've said, in the past, that I didn't want a Nolan Bond film.

I'm not a die hard Nolan fan but that's a great trailer. Cillian Murphy is a wonderful actor, I'm sure his performance will be brilliant in this. Looks like a great film

Hopefully, once Oppenheimer gets the world talking about Nolan again, he would be looked at by EON. After all, Spottiswoode directed Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot before TND. So Tenet which is miles better than Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, doesn't rule out Nolan from directing a Bond film.

I’d rather watch Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. It’s a terrible flick, low hanging fruit, but it makes sense.

Tenet can’t say the same. An end of the world thriller that makes no sense. And who the hell were the soldiers battling at the end??? Unseen baddies in buildings?

Nolan was enjoying the scent of his own farts, methinks.

I hope Oppenheimer is better— but it looks like a great looking film with no heart, lots of monologues with great actors speaking in hushed tones.

My fingers are crossed that more than my eyes are
    moved in this latest film.

No director is enjoys his farts more than James Cameron, in the last 25 years. Three overlong boring epic fails of a director being mean and full of himself. Who also rips off his “original” stories.

I still think that Nolan would be the biggest name person that EON would go with as director. I imagine they don’t want Cary coming back. I’d say let’s see what happens next year with both parties. I’d believe Nolan directing before Cavill and Johnson taking over as Bond.

    Agreed on Cameron, @MaxCasino.

I also didn't like Tenet, @peter. Not one bit. It was a joyless mess. Not that I mind the artistic liberty of the director. I'm fine with that. But the film was devoid of trill and joy.

That being said, I'm still a fan, and I would still like to see him have a go at Bond, even if I believe Bond needs more sexiness, exoticism and escapism than he can deliver.

Bang on @Univex about the sexy, exotic and escapism… The closest Nolan came was Inception— but that was what? 12 years ago? I’m not sure if Nolan has the overall playful cheekiness in himself to then inject into James Bond.

I’m not sure, either, to be fair. But I’m willing to give the fella a chance ;)

@MaxCasino , I agree about Cameron (and he’s an ass in real life), but Nolan is approaching this rarefied air.

@peter could it be possible Nolan is saving that side of himself for Bond? You know Nolan said he loves OHMSS and Dalton's his favourite Bond and it so happens that TLD is also a romantic Bond adventure.

You might not like them, but there's dozens of reasons why at least two of them are massive successes.

Me too. I’d say make sure he has a co-writer. Maybe his brother, not Purvis and Wade!

Yes, I must admit I didn't understand Tenet past a certain point either. To be honest, the concept of some sort of Special Forces team being able to move stuff with their minds and jump around like Jedis was actually kinda cool... then Kenneth Branagh started talking in a heavy Russian accent and the sound went all weird...

Nolan is a director who I think is better when he has to work within certain limitations - creative, budget etc. It's the case with most directors I'd argue, and it explains the old 'I prefer their older stuff' comment audiences have about a lot of filmmakers. Following is a film which showcases this perfectly. It's clearly made with a low budget, but the cinematography works, the story is interesting, and it's pretty well paced and engaging.

I appreciate that his films are visual spectacles, especially in how they use practical effects, and it's clear that many will see whatever he makes based on his name alone. That said I do find he's a director sometimes lacking an ability to match the more technical aspects of filmmaking with what he wants to do creatively. The sound design in Tenet is an example. It's obviously done purposely, but it's jarring and takes many out of the film. In fact he's had criticisms towards his use of sound for a while now (anyone remember when Bane's voice had to be either re-ADR'd or remixed after the first TDKR trailer? Or when people complained about the sound during Interstellar?)
