Apologies if there's already a thread but I couldn't find one.

https://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2022/the-sound-of-007-in-concert/

Anyone else going to this event in a few weeks? I managed to grab some of the last tickets, I wasn't going to go but I did figure that you don't get the chance to see Dame Shirley doing the Bonds with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra very often so it's probably worth a bash.

Celebrate 60 years of the James Bond film franchise with a charity concert that will showcase the iconic music of Bond, headlined by the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey.

Curated by five-time Bond composer David Arnold and produced by EON Productions, the concert will feature Bond soundtrack artists including Garbage, as well as special guests including Celeste, putting their own interpretation on classic theme songs, backed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Dodd.

The date marks the anniversary of the world premiere of the first 007 film, Dr. No held on 5 October 1962.

More special guests to be announced

They're also doing concert versions of Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre as part of the '60 Years of Bond' series, you might have seen posters around if you're in London.

This might be the thread, for the future: https://www.mi6community.com/discussion/39/cinema-theater-concert-event-alerts#latest

At any rate, I’d love to see this. Going to Europe hopefully this winter but after October.

The films in concert are on in November so you might be able to catch one or some of them. It's a pretty impressive thing to go to- I did Superman there a month or two back and having that performed by an orchestra is pretty stunning.

Actually yeah, a friend of mine texted me about that... Royal Albert Hall + Casino Royale + Live Orchestra = Very much want to check it out!

I have seen boh CR and SF live when they did them previosuly.

CR was superb. Note for note spot on. Arnold even played the guitar on the JB theme at the end.

SF was still really good but because the score has more electronic elements in it, this was more difficult to reproduce live, so the score didn’t *quite* line up with the film version. Good effort though.

I was just wondering about this, how faithful those live performances were.

Yes I wish they'd do a Barry film; I'd be there like a shot.
As Arnold is curating this 'Sound of' concert I'm hopeful there will be a few score cues and not just the songs.

Over the years I've seen Raiders, Jurassic Park and Superman at the Albert Hall in concert, and they were all incredibly faithful - I was amazed when the opening to Raiders began and it sounded identical. But like you I was curious about Skyfall as it seems harder to reproduce and a lot of that sound is down the production you'd think. I love the score but it's not one I'd feel the need to see.
Do a Goldfinger or Moonraker and I'd be there instantly. Imagine Thunderball being played live with those huge lush strings.

May I humbly submit that my wife and I were at the John Barry Memorial Concert in Royal Albert Hall in June, 2011, also hosted by David Arnold, with Dame Shirley singing and both Michael Caine and Timothy Dalton giving speeches. (And as an aside, George Michael sat in the box behind us. With a woman!) Anyway, it was all that we could imagine it could be, and worth every penny we spent to come from Germany to attend that concert.

I did happen to see Barry himself in concert there about 20 years ago I guess: George Martin introduced him that night, but I believe Caine did it the night before, and I was a bit miffed to have missed him! :)

And here's a setlist which I can't really confirm any more (but it sounds rather plausible):

Interesting that there was one from Playing by Heart in there. I used to really like that score.

Hoping to go to the CR live. I missed the last one and regretted it. Gotta be worth hearing Arnold's fantastic score with a live orchestra.

If you fancy it, do it. Those concert evenings are always good.

Mind you, one thing that's worth mentioning if you haven't been to one: the Albert Hall is a brilliant live music venue but a pretty terrible cinema, and the sound coming from the speakers isn't all that great- so much so that they have to put the subtitles on! :D It's fine though, because you're actually getting the finest sound quality possible for the score, in that it's literally in the room with you! :)

To be fair, I'd be happy just having the orchestra play the music. I don't need to have the film playing.

I have seen concerts at the Albert Hall (Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen) so I'm looking forward to hearing the score at the venue 👍

I would feel motivated to attend live score performances of all of the EON films, but the Barry scores would be more important to me as well. I'd just have to plan a visit to the UK to catch one of these events. I wish they would go one step further and create Blu-Rays of these performances, with multichannel audio. But I guess that would probably entail a lot of red tape and there probably isn't enough demand for it, if any. If re-releasing the actual scores is complicated, what's left for other recordings?

To be honest, I'm not sure there would be any point. The point of these is to have the scores performed live in front of you, to be in the room. If you're not there and watching it on a disc, then it's a recording of a score played along to the film, and that's what you already get watching the existing version of the film.

If they did Moonraker then yes, it'd be lovely to hear a complete version of the score which we haven't had, but I think the rumours of the original tapes being lost weren't actually true anyway.

I don't see it that way, no. If you're watching it on a disc, you get to see the orchestra performing the score, which is not the case when watching the film. That's a crucial benefit, in my opinion. Furthermore, no two performances are the same, so there's the enjoyment of having a different performance of the same music (and with a different mix). Then there's the fact the music could be in 5.1 audio or superior. In the films themselves, music, while often in 5.1, is contaminated with SFX, and in the soundtrack albums, it is in stereo most of the time.

At any rate, such a thing is not going to happen.

Yes okay, fair enough, although you can hear the film while the orchestra is playing, it's not clean audio.

I was gutted I missed it the first time. Which is why I got a ticket straight away this time. I'm only 45 minutes away from the Albert Hall by train 😁 Really looking forward to it.

New additions to The Sound of 007 in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 4 October have been announced. That's great, thank you. I wonder what Lulu will sing...

I feel like Paloma Faith turned up at the last thing like this I saw (can't for the life of me remember what that was- I'm sure David Arnold was there too at the Albert Hall), but John Grant is a good name to turn up.
