Is there a horror franchise that's unluckier than Friday the 13th? If there's any forward momentum at all on a 13th Friday the 13th that would be fantastic. Here's hoping some significant news truly is forthcoming.

Well.... depends on what you mean by luck. Hellraiser has sunk low enough to produce an ashcan film (Revelations). F13 hasn't had to suffer one of those, thankfully. We'll see if the recent news leads to anything.

True, I suppose there are fates worse than development hell.

Revelations. 😂 What a film that was. What's worse then hell? Try that film.

Sean Bean's from Sheffield, so he was definitely born to lose!

I still haven't seen Revelations. As far as I can tell, it hasn't been released on R2. Yet Judgement has. Though while I have heard nothing good about Revelations, I have heard that Judgement is slightly more bearable, by comparison. I was looking at a copy of Judgement in HMV around a fortnight ago. I very nearly bought it. I mean... I do want to complete the Hellraiser films, I have #1 and #3 through to #8. But I put it back on the shelf.

Judgement is crazy beyond repair but full of intriguing ideas and imagery.

I've only seen a couple of films post-Bloodline once and the rest I had never seen, so figured it was time to revisit some and experience the others. I rewatched Inferno, which was beyond horrible and clearly repurposed to fit the universe, but Hellseeker was a little bit better, mostly because of the return of Kirsty.

EDIT: I see the Severnaya guard from GE is in Deader in a key role! That's hilarious.

It's Hellraiser and Hellbound for me. Then there's the rest. Hell On Earth and Bloodline are okay; Hellworld is a guilty pleasure film for me. Judgement is weird enough to be cool. Inferno is the very worst. Wait, no, Revelations is the very worst.

So far I’ve only seen the first Hellraiser, which I found really solid and adored the effects. It’s one of those many franchises where I’m reluctant to try the sequels.

Hell on Earth will always be my favorite; the first three are fantastic and Bloodline is when the quality really starts to drop for me, but I like the cast and a fair amount of the cheesy sequences within so I usually give it a watch during my rewatch marathons. These others have been horrible. I'm eager to see the non-Bradley installments finally. I've no doubt they'll be horribly, horribly bad.

EDIT: Looks like we're getting another Saw installment set for October 27th, 2023:

I don't mind another SAW. I just don't want it to be more Spiral. What the bleep is Chris Rock, doing Chris Rock, doing in a SAW movie? That's like dropping Jason Mewes doing his Jay routine in the middle of Saving Private Ryan. I'm a big saw fan, and Spiral had some interesting ideas, but Chris Rock, whose OTT acting has never not been a source of irritation for me, doesn't belong in it. I wouldn't have minded Chris Rock in it if he had actually acted a bit more reserved and in sync with the genre. It's almost as if he mistook SAW for another Dogma.

Saw 1 and 2 I think are genuinely pretty good, but from 3 onwards it became too torture/gore porn-y for my tastes. That being said, Tobin Bell is consistently awesome in all of them, and to me there's no Saw without him. Frankly I'd love to just see him come back to go out on a high note. Spiral was trash, even worse the than the other worst Saw movies.

Just watched Craig in Menage a Trois, an episode of a late 90s horror anthology series called The Hunger. I knew about it, but hadn't seen it before. It was all right, nowt too sparkling. Craig was really good, though, very much in the vein of his acting in the early 00s indie films he used to do. Lena Headey was really good too, tbh. This was well before she was intended to play Jacqueline Ess in a film of Clive Barker's story, but looking at this I could really see her in that role - which I couldn't from what she did in GOT. So, yeah, 'interesting' rather than great, if that makes sense!

So you only watched? Not much more than a voyeur. Too scared to join in?

I got through the rest of the Hellraiser films and they were terrible, as expected. I must admit, I was really shocked to see the latest one, Hellraiser: Judgment, go in some original and different directions in its opening and finale. Everything else stunk but the first 10-15 minutes had me shockingly optimistic for a bit.

You have to admit that the imagery in Judgment is particularly crazy. :-D I rather applaud their attempt at doing something original.

Especially the opening, with that "courtroom trial" that's so vivid and palpably disgusting. I loved Tunnicliffe's character too. It was certainly something different, at least.

As I mentioned a while back, I've only seen Hell on Earth, but your comment did make me look up that "trial" scene of Judgment on YouTube. That was really cool, especially the typewriter cenobite, disgusting-looking yet so cordial.

Absolutely; the typewriter reminded me of the one from David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch. That opening was headed in the right direction, even with a non-Bradley Pinhead performance, but it devolved into the same old mess shortly after before picking up once more during the finale. Again, very shocked they'd go in such a fresh direction and I appreciated it.

I hope that it is better than Halloween Kills. My god, that film was so dumb, it has D-U-M-B running through it like lettering through a stick of Blackpool rock. I thought that all of the "Evil dies tonight" chanting, was a meme. I couldn't believe my ears. I still think Kills had the best version of The Shape, however.

What I love about the film is how it shows that angry mobs can quickly get out of hand. It's very 'of the times'.

Yeah it had a nice idea or two on display but mostly lost its way as it progressed and somehow found a way to sideline and waste Curtis' Laurie Strode consistently. It was horrible. I'm glad I won't have to waste a trip to the cinemas to see it instantly while dodging spoilers.

The box. We opened it - they came. Took their damn time, this time around though! Clive Barker originally had Pinhead speaking in 'the voice of an excited girl', so I imagine Barker gleefully approved of a trans woman being cast in the role!

Hellraiser has sunk low enough to make an ash can film, and yet can still attempt a reboot. Friday The 13th has had each of its films in cinema (though some have done better than others), and we are still waiting for a new film.

Just be glad that no one greenlit the pitch where Michael Myers opened the Lament Configuration...

Sounds like a bad variation for an earlier draft of Freddy vs Jason, that ends in a hell presided over by Pinhead.

Why would Michael even open the box? makes no sense.

Barker regained the US rights to Hellraiser at the end of 2021 - but it was a couple of months after this 'reimagining' wrapped, so I don't know if his producer's credit is just for the kudos or if it means that he had any actual input into or influence over the new film. I don't think it's based on the 'loose remake' script that Barker wrote a few years back when he was going to direct it himself, is it?

True, but the film had no idea if it was pro-angry mob or anti-angry mob. It flip-flopped on whatever it was it seemed to be "saying" more times than the Halloween franchise has rebooted itself (which is a lot).

Speaking from my perspective, it felt consistently anti-angry mob. That's the message I got start to finish. Thought the film did an excellent job being timely and "artsy" without becoming pretentious. I do hope more fans come around to it in time.
