It seems that a slug had gotten into the house below the front door (don't ask) and had proceeded to eat away parts of the back cover of the book. It had left a few kind of irregular jigsaw pieces missing from the back cover, along the outer edge. I was of course gutted as it was one of my first Bond novels. Happily, I've since found two good condition replacements in the wild for this particular edition though I believe I still have the damaged YOLT tie-in novel somewhere too. Nostalgia and sentimentality clearly dies hard.

    That's just terrible.

    I know. Strange and bizarre too. But then it is me, so you have to expect that.

    I've heard copper strips can stop slugs coming under doors as it gives them an electric shock! There are so many of the blighters where I live.

    We have our share of slugs, but "fortunately" they only eat our greenhouse plants and other vegetables in our garden, but spare our library. Since all literature (including the Bond novels) are still so readily available, I might actually be open to an agreement with the slugs to eat the books instead of the cucumbers, tomatoes, and pumpkins etc., but I don't really know how to contact them. Maybe they block my efforts because my wife keeps cutting their mates apart with a pair of scissors whenever she sees one.

    @Dragonpol My friend, I have a similar story about damaged novels, so I certainly feel your pain. I discovered this pretty recently while I was organizing my Bond room. I didn't realize that two CR novels had fallen behind the spare bed, and at some point I had pushed some heavy boxes under the bed to store them away, ripping through one of the novels and folding the other into an 'S' shape.

    The folded one was a Greater Pan edition, but the one that was destroyed was one of the first handful of novels I bought when beginning to collect them seriously, back in 2008-09. That was the green cover Pan novel with casino cheque illustration on the front. The box I pushed into it had left a two-inch rip through about a third of the book's pages. I'll post some pics sometime, showing the devastation.

    Reading these stories about damaged books really make my stomach turn. Accidents have happened to my book collection too, but luckily not for any "important" titles. These days I keep some books on display, and others in various Ikea boxes – preferably plastic ones. That way the books won't be damaged by my own carelessness or from lying out in the open, with the pages turning yellow due to exposure to sun light.
