This is so confusing. Another "007"? Have they run out of actual titles, suddenly?

OO7 is back in action! After a high-stakes rescue mission is mysteriously, violently sabotaged, Bond's future at MI6 hangs in the balance. As he awaits his fate, James Bond is urgently contacted by an old flame and mentor: Gwendolyn Gann, formerly Agent OO3, who warns Bond of an existential threat to England and the global balance of power. But before they can meet, OO3 turns up dead, sending Bond on the most personal mission of his career: find Gwendolyn Gann's killers, and expose the shadowy organization known only as "Myrmidon."

"James Bond 007", "James Bond" and now "007". Confuse title, and lack of imagination. You can bet the next one will be "Bond"...

I feel like Dynamite can't choose between ongoing series with several arc and miniseries. In the first case, to name the series "James Bond 007" is logical since the specific title will be the one of the story arc (and that seemed to be the plan back when Warren Ellis was the writer)... But since they reset numbering each time they have a new writer (while still naming the story arc), it's indeed quite bizarre.

Always glad for some more comic content. Hopefully it's better than Himeros.

Not really all that mystifying if one understands the thought process behind comic book sales. New #1 issues to tend to sell better in the comics marketplace. Dynamite is just trying to maximize the sales on this faltering title. Also, most comic book stores in America tend to rack new books alphabetically. "James Bond 007" is placed in the middle of the comics racks, under "J" -- an easy place to get lost. By titling the book with the number, "007," many stores may actually place it as the very first slot on their racks. It seems to me that Dynamite is simply trying every tool in their box to make this title sell. Not so bizarre after all, eh?
  • Not so bizarre after all, eh?
I mean, I know that #1 issues tend to sell better in the comics marketplace. I thus understand the use of miniseries. In this case, why not name every series "James Bond 007: [insert the name of the story]", rather than reseting numbering again without subtitles (there has been exceptions of course, like Himeros and Agent of SPECTRE).
  • It's just a guess on my part, but seriously: the alphabetical racking of titles -- which a lot of comics stores adhere to -- makes for a good reason to title the series simply "007." There are over a thousand comic book titles being released every month and it's easy for something in the middle of the alphabet to get passed over by the casual browser. Being placed at the beginning of the pack is a good way to avoid that fate. Maybe (and again, I'm only guessing but it is at least an educated guess) this is Dynamite's way of trying to goose the sales of the Bond books. (Yes, producing better comics than The Body and Himeros would be an even stronger way to improve sales...and judging by the info released on the new storyline thus far, it seems that Dynamite is trying their best in that regard as well.)

It would be nice if this new series is given more than five issues so the story won't feel so rushed.

Didn’t get too many story details, but got more of a feel of where he comes from with Bond. Apparently his favorite novel is actually Forever And A Day and his favorite film is Casino Royale. He said he wants to bring more of the intelligence work aspect to it, and was inspired by le Carré and Ed Brubaker’s Velvet comics. There will be an aspect of Bond’s world weariness rubbing up against the patriotism made him join up in the first place. It’s up in the air how many issues it will be, but at least six issues.

Thanks to Previews, here are the covers and synopsis for issue # 2 of 007 :
"The day you stop learning...stop moving forward...is the day you die, they say."
James Bond mourns a lost love even as he closes in on a clandestine organization whose agents would prefer that James die before he gets too close to their secrets. The action continues in this new spy thriller by Phillip Kennedy Johnson (Action Comics) and Marco Finnegan (Kolchak).

Great artwork, here's hoping for a great story and plot, the last two aren't good.

Gotta agree some of these covers are gorgeous. The last few have been lacking in all departments.

Anyone read 007 #1 yet? I’ve heard it’s kind of slow.

I must confess that despite the writing's quality, I was put off by the drawing and I didn't enjoyed the issue as much as I could have, if the artist had been someone else (Jason Masters or Marc Laming, to name people who worked on Bond comics). This isn't the only flaw, as I thought that the exchange between Bond and M was really badly written, but the art is really what bothered me the most. The opening pages, conceived as a pre-title sequence, are okey; I must confess I wasn't really onboard with what was written as a hook for the reader. I'm far more interested in Bond's relationship with 003, and I think the series could only improve in the future as it will be more focused on this.

I've gone ahead and subscribed to the run. I hardly ever read comic issue to issue so I thought it'd be an interesting experiment.

I paid a little bit more for the Aspinall cover for Issue 1 but it is a gorgeous bit of artwork. I should hopefully get it within in the next few days and I'll let you know my thoughts.

I'm quite disappointed by the graphics, like what happened to their faces? They all looked old.

As for the story, kinda reminds me of Goldeneye a bit.

I actually like the art in this one. The story seems pretty good for a #1 too. Interested to see where this one goes.

Finally caved and got the #1. Don't like the art. Never like it when they go all blank background. Makes it hard to get a feeling for where you are. For the beginning showdown, I thought they were on a roof, but then Bond suddenly shoots out a ceiling sprinkler? It was also hard to follow the timelining of the later part - what's current, what's memory, what is going on? - but I got the gist of it. Story is solid #1 material, as @00Heaven says. Interesting enough to want more. Nothing special.

The hard cover edition of Himeros is available from today.
  • How was Agent of Spectre for those who read it? That sounded like an interesting concept (rather like Gardner's Role of Honour, the whole idea of Bond going undercover in SPECTRE), though I wonder whether five issues would be enough room to satisfyingly explore the idea.

First part yes, second part, also yes.
From what I recall, it's a solid opening with a handful of nice ideas and cliffhangers to the first couple of issues and then it more or less goes where you expect it to go for the last few.
I don't think he ever actually goes undercover inside SPECTRE. It's more a case of him doing his normal thing while his goals temporarily align with Blofeld's. But I might be misremembering.

My copy of 007 Issue #1 finally arrived. Overall I think it's a strong start, I agree that the initial action scene is hard to follow but I found the art style growing on me especially when we get to Bond/Gann flashbacks where it leans it the pop art aesthetics and with the DB5 as well it's a interesting way of blending the modern with the 50s/60s style. Can't say I'm too sold on the story so far but it's decent enough.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. So, not one of the all-time great Bond comics then?
