RIP Monty Norman. What a legacy he will leave behind. The Bond theme could go down as the greatest song in movie history.

My favorite movie theme, and my favorite theme, period. Just can't get enough of it.

It's certainly a contender for most recognizable.

58 years ago, we lost the man who started it all.

A date one never forgets. Sad to think that our founder Ian Fleming is now dead longer than he was alive. It was a relatively short life, all things considered, but he lived the equivalent of several fascinating lifetimes during it.

Much like Bond himself, Fleming was also a fitting example of the famous quote now so commonly attributed to 007....

"The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

One of the many ways Fleming and Bond were similar.

Shared in another thread but Robbie Coltrane, who played Valentin Zukovsky during the Brosnan years, has passed away at the age of 72:

Crushing, he was always one of my favorite allies of the Brosnan era and I always really enjoyed his little character arc over a couple films. RIP, Robbie.

Far too young! That’s very upsetting; a genuine talent.

So saddened by this news, he seemed to be a very kind person.

I’ve always considered Zukovsky one of my favourite and also one of the most amusing Bond allies.

He was superb in many other films as well, notably of course are the HP films, for which most people will, quite rightfully, remember him for.

RIP Robbie, you’ll be missed :(

RIP, he was a terrific character actor.
  • Will be sadly missed as Hagrid and Zukovsky among many memorable roles. Wish he could have overlapped with the Dan Craig golden era.

Just like to add my thoughts and condolences. Robbie Coltrane was a great actor. His performances as Zukovsky were highlights. I got to see both GE and TWINE during Odeon's running on the series. He will be missed.

Very saddened by the news of Coltrane's passing. From nuns on the Run, through Blackadder, to Zukovsky. The man was increadably talented and made the most ludicrous characters believable. 72 is way, way too young for such a fine human beeing.

RIP Robbie Coltrane. Zukovsky was one of my favorite characters of the Bond franchise. Really wish they had done more with Zukovsky.

RIP Robbie Coltrane. Looking at his age and mine, it's another case of impacts coming closer considerably. Helps to put things in perspective.

RIP I can't believe it he was such a good actor

Wow, really wasn't expecting that. What a great actor. Even in TWINE (a film I hate) I've always said his performance is such a stand out in that movie, as he was in GE. Like Alan Rickman, his Harry Potter co-star and another seemingly kind man who died too soon, he was one of those actors who I grew up watching in various films/tv shows and who had an ability to make even the most outlandish characters feel human, believable, and watchable. RIP.

Sad to read of the passing of Robbie Coltrane, a very talented actor who was often a highlight of any role he was given. His contribution to the Bond series will live on, as a quasi-villain / ally, Valentin Zukovsky. A standout of both films he appeared in. GE and TWINE.
And of course as the beloved Hagrid in the Harry Potter series.
A big loss to the world of entertainment, RIP.
  • QBranchQBranch Always have an escape plan. Mine is watching James Bond films.

Can only echo what others have said, really sad news, he was a great actor and I love his character Valentin, such a fun and interesting relationship between him and Bond. One of the few icons to stay confined to the Brosnan era, and it's worth a mention he was also seen in the video games GE64 and TWINE. It was only a month ago that I was sticking his image onto a caviar jar. RIP Robbie Coltrane.

Just asking, is Robbie Coltrane is the first and only actor from the Brosnan Era who've died?

I mean all of the casts from the Brosnan Era were all still alive right?

Most are, but enough have died not to list them in one thread.

Vincent Chiavelli who played Dr. Kaufman died quite a while ago (2005).

Gottfried John who played Ourumov as well.

And of course dear old Desmond Llewellyn.

I'm sure there are other members of cast and crew who may have played a smaller role too.

RIP Robbie Coltrane. For me, he will always be Valentin Zukovsky before Hagrid, Falstaff before Zukovsky, but Fitz before any other role.

R.I.P. Robbie Coltrane. Very sad news. The series 'Cracker' was one of the very best on T.V.! And he made numerous memorable cameos in films such as 'Mona Lisa' and ''Defence of the Realm'
I was no fan of the Brossa era, but Coltranes Zukovsky character was one of the positives!

Putting aside Bond and Harry Potter, Cracker is probably my favourite TV show ever and he was absolutely fantastic in it. Always had my fingers crossed they'd do one more episode one day. No chance of that now sadly.
