Obi-Wan’s greeting to Luke felt perfect.

I thought that was good fun; I even got a bit teary when Leia's theme got played in, but I guess that's John Williams for you. The climactic showdown was plenty of fun too. Reva maybe felt like her character had run its course last week and felt a touch unnecessary here, which is a shame because she was the only one left whose fate we didn't already know! :)
But yeah, entertaining, if pretty disposable, stuff
Age and experience certainly play a part, but McGregor's performance here far eclipses those in the prequels. The Guinness-isms feel more organic and less hammy.

Yeah I guess, but being free of Lucas' direction didn't improve him as much as I thought it might. I'm not really convinced he's all that great to be honest: this didn't feel like a movie star performance to me.

Ultimately I thought the show was totally unnecessary offered nothing new, it was poorly written and looked and felt cheap. I am glad people enjoyed it, I did on occasion for the wrong reasons when I thought it was laughably bad. @mtm you hit the nail on the head, it is 'disposable stuff'.

I've never been a fan of his. I always thought he was extremely serviceable. He's never wowed me in anything, even in the more acclaimed films he's been in.

But I really liked his work here.

Honestly, all Star Wars is disposable entertainment. It’s never been high art, and to revere it as such is bizarre but I guess that’s what fanaticism is all about.

Definitely! The religious worshipping of the original trilogy is quite strange. They are quite flawed entertainment blockbusters. I like them and enjoy them alot, but all three films have weaknesses and by no means masterpieces.

It is not the quality of the films that made Star Wars a pfenomenon, it is the ethos.

I can enjoy all the films, even the more flawed ones. There is no unwatchable SW movie. There are people who should not being making them though. I’m sure we’ll see episodes 10-12 sometime in the future at some point.

Controversial opinion: I’m looking forward to Taika Waititi’s, Rogue Squadron, and even Rian Johnson’s possible trilogy. Give some fresh characters and stories, the universe is truly expandable!

10-12 is guaranteed. Just wait 10 years and before you know it “their stories never ended”.

And I’m okay with that. George Lucas referred to his saga as a soap opera, so it seems fitting that we’d continue to see the saga play our generation to generation. When LucasFilm started calling TROS the final installment of the saga rather than just the trilogy, I KNEW that was bunk.

My guess is that for the next trilogy they’ll actually go to George Lucas’ unused ideas, maybe even bring him on board as a creative consultant. The narrative will be about Lucas having more stories to tell in the Star Wars canvas as a way to get goodwill from fans who revere Lucas’ vision.

It's what they should have done with 7-9 I think. Lucas is not a great film maker, but his ideas are interesting and he obviously understands the essence of the Star Wars universe better than anyone.

But whatever they do they have to expand the story! You can’t keep telling about the same old families and just magically bring back the Empire as the adversary every time.

Funnily, THE LAST JEDI ended up using the most of Lucas’ ideas he had for Episode 7 and 8. A young girl goes to find Luke at the first Jedi temple as a recluse, having cut himself off from the Force. There’s an apprentice he had that turned to the dark side and killed his Jedi students. Then in Episode 8 Luke would die and the new hero has to go at it alone.

That’s why the EPISODE 7 that we get feels off. The movie literally starts with the new heroes searching for Luke. But then midway through the movie that story gets put on hold for all the Starkiller base stuff. Ideally, that should have been cut out entirely as it’s just a retread of ANH, and instead Rey finds Luke in the middle of EPISODE 7.

It sort of plays to Lucas’ symmetry. In ANH, the old Jedi master Obi-Wan is trying to recruit Luke onto an adventure, and then in the sequel trilogy it’s a young girl trying to bring back Luke on the adventure.

I didn't know that. What's the source? I thought Lucas' ideas fir the latest trilogy had been duscarded and never made official.

Pretty basic layout of what carried over from Lucas’ ideas:

    https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star-wars-how-george-lucas-episode-vii-outline-became-the-last-jedi/?amp

Lucas would later reveal other ideas he had that were ultimately not used in the sequels, such as exploring a “microbiotic world” expanding on the medichlorians.

    https://www.indiewire.com/2018/06/george-lucas-episode-vii-episode-ix-1201974276/

My guess is that if 10-12 happens, we’ll probably see the idea of a microbiotic world explored.

Yeah I still believe that the best films George Lucas ever made are the Indiana Jones movies. They're just on a higher level of craft to me, and it'd be hard not to lay a lot of that at Mr Spielberg's feet.

I was out with some friends the other night and we were chatting about Obi Wan and SW in general, and none of us are huge fans, and when it came up in conversation we all agreed that Force Awakens is a better film than Star Wars. Not more original, not more iconic- but it's just a better made, written, directed, acted movie and functions better as a film on its own merits. If folks took nostalgia out of the frame I think a lot more would agree.

Interesting! I must admit I have no idea where he's going with that..!

The Obi-Wan Kenobi finale left me quite satisfied , and I think it was a nice fitting end . I don’t need to see a second season, but I wouldn’t be upset if they eventually make it either!

Editing to add one gripe : was not a fan of the generic sounding OST. I really liked the composer for Mando and Boba Fett, but Natalie Holt (who did Loki score) was not very good !

Oh she was the Loki composer? That does surprise me as I thought the Loki score was really good- this was pretty average, as you say.

Makes sense. I found her music very "low-key"... ;)

Make that about 9 years and decreasing if we get a season 2.

There’s A LOT of things in that original film that got contradicted/retconned as soon as the second film was made. It’s practically a meme at this point:

    Leia?

If Kennedy actually decides to backtrack on the “we don’t recast legacy characters”, Brown would make a very good Leia.

Sounds about right, glad to see another Solo fan. I'd be a touch more generous to The Force Awakens, largely because of the beginning all the way up to the Falcon leaving Jakku. From there it really drops off IMO.

Yes! Millie would be great as Leia. She's an incredibly gifted actress. I can definitely see her in that role.

Just finished watching the Kenobi series. Some good moments, but good god, overall what a load of rubbish! I admit my expectations were low given that Kathleen Kennedy has run the franchise into the ground at this point but it was cheap, badly written, poorly edited, and that Reva character was played by a terrible actress.

Critical drinker pretty much sums up feelings on the matter..

My Dad was in hospital when the series was being released so he missed it. He came home towards the end of the week, so I got to enjoy the series again while watching with him.

I liked it just as much the second time, although the final episode stuck out a lot more as the weakest (aside from the Kenobi/Vader duel). Reva's arc really should have been finished by episode 5. Her scenes in the last episode were superfluous.

Yes, she probably had the most interesting story as it turns out, but it was over before the last episode.

Moses Ingram did a good job with the scenes she was given. There was an obvious arrogance to her but it was clear she was hiding something throughout. I don't really understand why people are slating the performance.

It only dawned on me that the actor playing the Grand Inquisitor was none other than Rupert Friend, which was amusing. He was having a lot of fun hamming up that voice.
