Quick Big Mi6 Fleming Novel Ranking

Let’s take a slight detour into the literary world of Bond before we get back to more cinematic-inspired fun.

Provided enough members participate, I’d like to collect your Fleming novel rankings, put them all together in one big ranking and reveal them one by one, starting at the bottom.

I’ve considered excluding the short story collections, but since we include non-EON’s for the films, I want to include FYEO and OP&TLD for this one too.

The candidates are:

Casino Royale
Live and Let Die
Moonraker
Diamonds Are Forever
From Russia, with Love
Dr. No
Goldfinger
For Your Eyes Only
Thunderball
The Spy Who Loved Me
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
You Only Live Twice
The Man with the Golden Gun
Octopussy and The Living Daylights

No surprises there ;)

Please PM me your rankings and I’ll put them all together in one big ranking.

PS I’ve accidentally put this one in the wrong section, and I don’t seem to find a way to correct that, so if a mod can take the necessary steps that’d be much appreciated :)

    Moved it for you, @GoldenGun.

This'll sadly be the first one I don't participate in, haven't read them in a few years now so I couldn't begin to make a proper ranking. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out, though!

Sent! I consider my Top Nine to be upper tier. The next couple not so much of a drop off. I do love them all, though.

Thanks @Creasy47 ! If you change your mind, you’re always welcome to join of course.

@StirredNotShaken @MI6HQ Could you please PM your rankings as well? It’s easier to count them when I can find them all in the same place :)

I think I can predict #1 (I bet owe all can). I can most likely guess the next four in some order, but not exactly.

I sent mine too. I love all those books so every book that doesn't end up in the number 1 spot will move me to tears. 😉

Me too, it's probably the number one because it's really different from the film.

It would be more fun when we wouldn't see half of the rankings already...

@GoldenGun after this, just a suggestion, that It's interesting if we also have a Bond Poster ranking game similar to how we've ranked the Title Sequences.

I started a re-read in 2020, but still have three left to re-read. Would an eleven book ranking be any use?

Thanks for the suggestion @MI6HQ !

@ColonelAdamski I’m afraid it will be too difficult to compose a general ranking if some entries appear one time less than the others. It’s for that reason that I’m always stalking the participants to include CR67 and NSNA in the other games :))

Anyway, you can always add the ones you haven’t reread where you think you’d rank them…

Popped my ranking through! Only read the novels once so like the films there will no doubt be shuffling around to come in the years ahead.

It really is. I guess because the books are closer in quality to one another and, because Fleming wrote them all, they are more tonally and creatively consistent, but still there are enough differences between them you’d think it wouldn’t be quite so hard.
