What country would you like to be the MAIN location for BOND 26?

Like Octofinger, I think that Sub-Saharian Africa would be a nice place. Cities like Nairobi, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Windhoek, Harare or Gaborone seem like a perfect fit for an action scene. Luanda has a huge ghost modern neighbourhood paid by China that looks promising, too.

The fact that we haven't been treated to a Bond story in Ireland is a genuine crime. So much they could do with the location and story, especially since it has so much centuries long history to it but also a very contemporary history due to a recent independence compared to the rest of Europe.

Would also love to see Dubai in any shape or form, but then you have to deal with people putting Bond and Mission Impossible into another pointless battle.

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 Dubai's an odd, albeit interesting location. I actually lived there for a time. It's very much over the top modernisation encapsulated - lots of large buildings constantly being made, many of which are tacky (the Burj Khalifa is the one most people think of, but you also have things like the Palm Islands which I believe are currently eroding and slowly going underwater - a very cool idea for a Bond film). You also have these huge stretches of desert on the outskirts which are very different. The Mission Impossible film just seemed to use it as a means for a stunt piece. I'm sure a Bond film could use this location while evoking something different about the city - the fact that money flows through the damn place like water, investors constantly scrambling to build these structures on top of this old Arabian city and outdo each other. I can perhaps see it being used in a similar way to how Vegas is depicted in the DAF novel - a sort of underlying sleaziness beneath all the gaudy hotels, race tracks and spas etc.

For Bond 26, I just want a sense of wonder from the places Bond visits. Think TSWLM and the pyramids--you felt like you were there. Aside from the PTSes in SP and NTTD (and arguably SF), the locations of the last three films felt oddly generic/disconnected from any physical place. This is something I think CR and QoS did better.

I think he should meet some people who are from there and get a bit of local flavour. Like going to Shanghai and just basically talking to an ex British agent; or going to Norway to speak only to a Frenchwoman. He didn’t seem to know anyone in Jamaica either.
For all the times Craig’s Bond has been to Italy I struggle to think of any Italians he’s met (It’s unclear where Mathis is supposed to be from! :D )

@007HallY, yes, I've kept an eye on Dubai throughout the years and it is quite a crazy place. It seems like they building everything bigger and taller just for the sake of it, and to the detriment of the actual location itself. Quite a model for modern decadence and excess, if there is one.

I certainly have no doubt Bond could use the location to great effect, I only mentioned MI because this place has been a breeding ground for those kinds of battles in the past. I'm sure the Bond franchise could make great use of the place, and in a way that truly is its own and no just a retread of MI: Ghost Protocol. It would be cool to see Bond bumping heads with the richest of the rich in a decadent party, where he has to avoid rolling his eyes at the excess on display, or see some of the culture in snapshots as he makes his way on his mission. The place is a spectacle, and I can't believe the Bond films haven't taken advantage of it yet. Perhaps MI using it to such renown scared them off.

An early draft of CR had the PTS take place at the Burj Al Arab. I'm not sure if it was just a discarded idea or if they encountered complications with getting permits to film there.

Perhaps they're careful of how their buildings and city are depicted. In MI it was just a cool stunt. Almost an advertisement for the city itself.

LOL. Giannini is so Italian, and clearly not French, that they had to write a joke into QoS.

@007HallY, good point. The studio and producers would very much have to play it as they would with China, so as not to offend those too sensitive about how they are depicted on the screen.

I also feel like everything in the realm of luxury and high-production value is going to Dubai and the other gulf states, so it is at the same time boring, necessary and inevitable that Bond ends up there at some point. The World Cup, Rally Dakar, more and more F1 races, loads of high value trade conventions, they just had an Expo, Art Dubai isn't exactly Art Basel yet, but it's getting there, with the blowback stuff like horse racing is getting in the west I expect more and more of that to wander there, too and so on and so forth. As someone who's never been, it feels like a playground for super-wealthy people and with China shutting down a bit more and Russia out of the picture, it seems like that is only going to increase. So it feels like it is only a matter of time until a villain decides the best place to flount their wealth and throw a big event that inevitably provides an entry point for the world's greatest spy is somewhere on the gulf.
Plus, the region provides ample opportunities for interesting plots, but just like China and Hong Kong, they probably can't go and film there and then do a bracing commentary on the war crimes committed in Yemen or something.

Not officially. But I thought that the PTS jump in TSWLM was filmed there.

Yes, that's right. Bond was meant to go to Canada in TB as part of the search for the stolen Vulcan bombs but he got the location changed to the Bahamas instead. In MR Q shows the footage of the fuselage of the crashed plane that came down in the Yukon, which is in Canada. That's all the connections I can come up with but, no, Bond has never been there in the films so we might see it in a future Bond film some day.

Yeah this would be the issue. I like the idea of a Bond film showing the seedy side of Dubai, you’ve got everyone from Daniel Kinnahan to Russian oligarchs holed up there at the minute, so there’s a lot they could use as inspiration. But I can’t imagine the UAE letting them film anything like that there. Makes them look bad and could put off potential tourists.

Maybe they could go old school and set a sequence in Dubai (maybe just a PTS) but film it at Pinewood? I think some of the recent examples of that (Shanghai in Skyfall, NTTD’s death scene) look really good. A decadent super rich party on the top floor of a skyscraper or something. But they wouldn’t even be able to send a crew over for some establishing shots, so the whole thing would be so tricky to pull off convincingly that it might just not be worth it when there’s so many other locations.

Admiral Chuck Farrel in GoldenEye was also part of the Canadian Navy if I remember correctly too.

Well Bond could have pursued checking those (leaking) seals with the beautiful Canadian Corrine after QOS. That would have been something.

Wasn't there supposed to be a whole Canadian section in Danny Boyle's version of NTTD? I seem to recall something like that.

As for other locations: I like Argentina very much. Moonraker has the Iguazu Section, which is one of the most spectacular places I've ever been to, but even without it, there are some stunning areas to that country. Buenos Aires has beautiful areas. Patagonia has both deserts and glaciers and the country certainly has enough political history to put a plot there, to put it mildly. Main problem would probably be that - depending on how you do it, it could be too similar to the plot and the locations of QoS (which was shot in Chile and Panama, but whatever)

I'm afraid to share my country here, I want Bond to be there, but suddenly many people here didn't like Philippines because of our Government.
I posted some beautiful locations of my country in the "Places that could have been a villain lair thread" but someone responded to me that he don't want Bond to be there because he hates our President and called him a mass murderer. I'm really sad when I've read that.
I didn't mentioned him here for his confidentiality, as I don't want him to be put in shame. I'm also thinking about his privacy, and I don't want to create some troubles. I'd just let it passed.

I’m all for Argentina! Bond needs to hangout in some smoky bars/casinos in Buenos Aires. Some tango flourishes in the soundtrack would be perfect. If continuing with South America, Brazil would be a nice return.

Perhaps a more offbeat note, Paraguay’s Ciudad Del Este is a known trafficking/laundering hub in the region sitting at the crossroads of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. This city could be a key component in any kind of illegal smuggling/trafficking plot.

I was about to suggest somewhere in Africa, since I didn’t think he’d been there for a while, then I remembered that he did go to Morocco in Spectre. It just completely slipped my mind because all we got was a hotel room and a desert, and he didn’t really interact with anyone who was actually from there. I think @mtm is right, we need a bit more local flavour back. What’s the point in blowing the budget travelling all over the world only to use these places as window dressing?

Seoul would be cool too, there’s loads of brilliant Korean actors who’d be good in a Bond film.

Argentina is a good shout. I’d like to see him go to Colombia one day too. A spiritual successor to LTK could’ve made a great Craig era story, a more critical portrayal of Bond would fit right into a Sicario style commentary on the drug wars.

@thelivingroyale, very much agreed. I wish the series would get back to using locations like the Moore era did, one of the best things about those movies. You really felt those locations, in sweeping, wide and engaging shots and moments. TSWLM is really the pinnacle of a film inviting you in to its locations, in breathless detail. That's definitely a feeling the Bond films have lacked more and more over time, far more than I'd like, and I don't exactly know why. I guess it goes along with so many films having just green screen backdrops these days, so your eye seldom takes in anything truly genuine, like in major superhero films. Sad, but that's where the industry has been turning.

For me, a feeling of immersion in locations has to do in a big way with showing the streets, and more importantly, people on the streets doing things-- walking, sitting on a café, whatever. That's why I enjoyed seeing Jamaica and Cuba in NTTD, but Norway was much less interesting. Same with Rome in Spectre.

Edit: I too have been championing for Argentina for a while now. A film that has slowly become one of my favorites, Robert Duvall's Assassination Tango, made such delightful use of Buenos Aires.
