I must admit I struggle to remember any cool moments in it. What also wound me up with it is that the jokes all feel strained and overworked and all fell really flat (for me anyway, I get that's a very subjective thing). Poe's little funny and witty bit of defiant humour when he pretends he can't understand what Kylo is saying in Force Awakens becomes a clumsy and slightly leaden whole sequence in TLJ where he pretends he can't heard the Imperials over the radio etc.

The weird thing is, if Knives Out had come out before TLJ with its rather sparkling, light wit and charismatic, charming characters, I'd have been really excited for that director to do a Star Wars film. But they feel like the work of different people to me.

When the film started out with a "General Hugs" joke that was overplayed several times, I knew what type of mood to expect for the rest of the film. The CGI racing animals bit on the casino planet was laughably bad and everything I loathe about these new films.

I really enjoyed the Praetorian Guard fight, the series needs more of that, but moments like this are so few and far between.

For all its faults the last Jedi is. I where near as bad at he spectacular car crash that is the Rise of Skywalker. The only star wars film ever made I have no interest in watching again.

A desperate attempt to wrap up a non existent story

Rise seemed perfectly fine to me, I don't know what all the fuss was about. It's not terribly inspired, but it's a perfectly functional adventure movie and does everything a Star Wars movie should do- they have adventures and go to other planets etc. I would say it's still a better film than any of the prequels, as is Last Jedi.
For me the sequels go 5/5, 2/5, 3/5.

I gotta say, TLJ and TROS were about one and the same for me - they had their faults, sure, but I don't see them being anywhere near "worst film ever" status; they're not even the worst installments in the series for me. I thought TROS (finally saw it a few days back) was a bit better than TLJ for the most part, and the CGI in some sequences is genuinely breathtaking (like the Endor moon arrival, with the gigantic waves crashing in the background). All in all, surprised to feel that way after reading so much vitriol and negativity about it in the last couple of years. I can't imagine I'll ever return to these sequel installments again but they're not the worst thing in the world either.

However, when an inevitable new trilogy kicks off again, I do hope they go with something more original and stop relying on the past so heavily.

Hear, hear! I’m writing my own episode 10, which honors all 11 previous films.

It seems like such a "legacy" thing these days, I guess it's the new trope or angle that most of these big gap sequels are taking on - it was used pretty well in Scream 4 yet copied once again in the new installment and it doesn't work. I've seen it employed elsewhere and I just tire of it. Let's leave the past in the past and craft something new and original. The galaxy is endless, surely there are more iconic and influential names out there beyond the Skywalkers, or involve some idiotic familial twist in each new installment, or at least don't follow the same sort of empty reveal over and over again.

I still think (and hope) we’ll see a movie from him.

In my opinion Lucas should buy the rights to his franchise back and make a movie with Favreau that retcons the entire sequel trilogy. Make a direct follow-up to ROTJ with Luke training a new generation of Jedi and use the EU books as inspiration.

Retreading similar ground is the last thing I want (though this idea sounds way better than what was delivered in the end). After all the fan service and inevitable butchering of some iconic legacy characters, I'd much rather shift to a world of original players and connections that don't constantly draw on the past installments.

As long as guys like Dave Filoni are running the new shows, there’s zero chance of the sequels being struck out of canon.

But it’s amusing to me because even 15 years ago there were fans who said they hoped the prequels were struck out of canon.

The rise of Skywalker - I find it deeply unsatisfying when questions aren’t answered. Like how the emperor survived. And why. And what his plan was. Ridiculous and totally undermines Vader’s redemption.

Literally no one dies In Star Wars anymore

It's been a while since I saw it but I thought he explained all that.

I only saw it the once but I don't think they did. Although my expectations were pretty checked at the door so I just tried to enjoy the film for what it was.

I thought it was as explained as anything in Star Wars ever is, with its space magic and stuff. And he's quite clearly being kept alive by a massive machine, because you can see it right there. Does he explain what his plan is any further in the other films? It's just generally to rule the galaxy and be evil, isn't it?

I’m just happy it’s not Chris Pratt headlining another franchise with his boring, one note acting.

Not only did he survive, but his return is simply...revealed in the opening crawl. What? Why?

I remember when fans were desperate to figure out who Snoke was, only for that to not matter whatsoever.

The films usually skip some in-between so the crawl can reveal them and we join in media res. Also not an issue for me, but obviously it would have been nice for the previous film to have been following that plot in some way.

Definitely, but seems like it would've been way more effective as a reveal in the film instead of saying "oh, by the way, this villain's returned for the last entry in this trilogy." Like you said, though, it's the least of the film's issues thankfully but it certainly stands out.

    This is fair.

I’m more interested how he ended up attached to the massive machine keeping him alive after been thrown to his death down a shaft then his supposed dead body surviving a supernova when the Death Star exploded.

Then he conjured you tens of thousands of star destroyers and hid them under the rock and earth. Presumably with all the crews aboard.

It’s a good thing it moves so fast as it doesn’t bear up to any scrutiny

It’s dumb, because there was no need for an overlord character when Kyle Ren and the Knights of Ren were all right there, already having been set up in the last two films. But no, the director of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS strongly feels you gotta repeat the beats of ROTJ because god forbid he comes up with something original.

I thought the Knights all got killed in the second one, I was never sure how they came back.

Those weren’t the knights. They were Snoke’s guards, much like the imperial guards that worked for the Emperor in ROTJ.

Rian Johnson did briefly consider using the Knights of Ren, but ultimately felt they should be a much tougher force than the red guards. Ironically, JJ Abrams would then just have them easily slaughtered by Ben Solo anyway, like it’s no big deal.

Isn’t that what happens to all the baddies? They have a fight, the goodies win.

Imagine if in the last crusade a partially melted belloq was guarding the grail. It makes about as much sense as Rise of Skywalker

“Ha dr Jones. The ark is a pathway to many abilities…”

That’s not the point. Otherwise, most fight scenes in the history of cinema should just be distilled to ten seconds just because we already know the outcome.

“We know Bond is going to electrocute Oddjob to death, so let’s just do that a few seconds after the fight starts”

I’m not sure Ren defeats them in ten seconds, no.

    You get my point.

Ben Solo took out the Knights of Ren faster than when he and Rey fought the red guards.

I do and I don't; sometimes the goodie gets beaten by the baddie when he needs to (Luke vs Vader in Empire) and sometimes he doesn't (Luke vs Vader in Jedi) depending on what the story wants. It's not really about how tough one side is. Ren was always going to beat them, honestly I'd rather less in the way of tiresome lightsaber fights if at all possible. I feel like both fights were about the same length anyway.
