I wonder if the DC Bond has been a victim of a general "dumbing down" of culture where having knowledge and expertise in any specific field is regarded as either sobbery or being a geek. DC Bond has had an earthy, realistic quality but, with that, they have lost his love of the finer things in life . I agree with many comments that the writers have missed this area of his charater and it's a great shame. Would DC Bond recognise a "Nymphalis polychloris?" I'm sure the RM Bond would.

I think bits like Bond being able to recognize a specific breed of moth was rather over the top when it comes to showing off Bond's knowledge. Fleming's Bond was knowledgeable, but I can't imagine him having the interest or patience to learn something like lepidopterology. Knowing his cars, wine, and food? Absolutely. We saw Craig able to show that off such knowledge by being able to recognize the make and year production of a Rolls Royce approaching from a long distance.

I agree, I think it has to be the sort of expertise which makes sense with Bond’s character.

So it’s understandable if he knows a lot about cars, or guns, or sherry, or champagne, or gambling.

Where I don’t think it works (and I’m looking at you, Moonraker) is knowledge about things like rare orchids.

Indeed, and it shouldn't be too OTT. The idea that any human being could be able to taste which original 19th century vintage a cherry is based on is admittedly fun, but also quite ridiculous... I want Bond to be a connoissaur, not a psychic...

I like when Bond is a bit of a know it all. It makes him unpredictable and mysterious.

    Quiet moments:

    - pulling out a device from the travel case, then checking the room for bugs
    - kicking off the shoes and pouring a drink
    - snooping around in his downtime, PPK in hand
    - plucking a piece of fruit from the bowl
    - slow dancing with a girl

I want to see the following return to Bond films -

    1) Unused Fleming scenes or entire novels adapted (to fit modern times, obviously). I don't care if its several scenes taken from various novels and woven into a new script, 80's Maibaum style, or a full length novel adapted.

    2) Bond traditions firmly back in place - gunbarrel, briefing with M in his office, flirt with Moneypenny, pop down to see Q, and then that's the last we see of them for another movie. No more ridiculous Scooby gang in on the action.

    3) Unused Fleming scenes or novels adapted.

    4) Bond getting bloodied, bruised, torn, injured and battered, LTK/CR/QOS style.

    5) Unused Fleming scenes or novels adapted.

    6) Decent upbeat songs again (AVTAK, TLD, LALD, CR), instead of depressing dreary crap, composed by the person who is also doing the soundtrack, which leads me to....

    7) David Arnold. He's the only person who gets John Barry and Bond.

    8) Unused Fleming scenes or novels adapted.

    9) No more personal angst crap for Bond. He's just a spy on a mission to get a bad guy.

    10) Did I mention unused Fleming scenes to be adapted...?

@jetsetwilly Number 2 is an absolute must.

This is definitely one of the things I hope to see return. I would even like to see this kind of character taken further, as suggested by @FoxRox , by becoming a main female villain. Elektra is definitely a good template as she's both a femme fatale and an antagonist manipulating events. This kind of combination of traits is something that I hope to find in future installments.

Another thing I miss are some really exotic locations again. Bond has largely been very "major city based" over the last couple of decades. Although I don't mind seeing Bond in lets say Shanghai or Tangier, I wished they could have used other locations as well in China and Morocco respectively. I want to see Bond wander around temples, angient ruins and cultural heritage cites, and I want to see him in small villages and in open nature like jungles, mountains, desserts etc. I realize it complicates production and costs, but it would be very much worth it in my opinion.

(And PLEASE, no more London for a while!)

    THIS.
    Agree 100%.

  • Completely agree about the London thing.

London seems to be in nearly every movie for some reason. Even Marvel superhero movies. One of the nice things about the Star Wars films is that they don’t include London :))

Mary Goodnight was a recurring character in the novels. She should come back and done right. Carte Blanche did it. Other characters that should come back are Oddjob, Goldfinger and Alec Trevelyan. No alter egos for the villains anymore. It’s stupid and pointless. Goldfinger because there’s a lot of CEOs and politicians who are real life Goldfinger’s (and Bond villains in general).

I say start adapting other novels. Icebreaker, The Union Trilogy, Trigger Mortis and Forever and a Day (with Anthony Horowitz writing) would be great places to start. Take a break from original screenplays for a while (namely from Purvis and Wade). People want stand alone missions again? The books are mostly them. If they are interested in multiple movie story lines, plan them in advance. Not at the last minute like Daniel Craig’s.

Just accurately and sequentially recreate Fleming's novels, in the time period Fleming wrote them. The franchise has made sufficient profit to pay this respect to Fleming.

    More spy work.
Generally more Terence Young-style spy thrillers.
    Smoking. Drinking. Other stuff abusing.
    More sexuality.
More card games. More any other risky games and stuff, NSNA-style, but much more serious and polished than that mess.
    More humour.
And I like where Dalton and Craig led Bond, he should stay human with complex emotions and inner constitution, not superhero machine.
He should be an effective top-level assassin that is damaged inside and has his own struggles that he masks with over the top bravado and other stuff.
We should see those assassinations in thrillful in risk way, and see what effects they have on Bond.

At least I believe so. All the rest they have already.

Yeah, I was thinking the same recently. I was watching Goldfinger. Really enjoyed the golf game and Bond snooping around his facility, and I thought, when was the last time we had anything like that in a modern Bond film? Obviously he’s never been a realistic spy, but he did used to feel like an unrealistic spy, rather than a more conventional unrealistic action hero. I think it’s probably an unintentional consequence of the Craig era’s character centric approach, and the ongoing theme of how a ruined childhood (or surrogate childhood, in Silva’s case) can mess you up. It’s been very thematically consistent, but it has given us a few creepy weirdos with remote hideaways in a row now, without any sort of legitimate fronts for their operations. So, they’re more psychological in threat, and there’s not really a lot for Bond to investigate, because they don’t pretend to be anything other than villains. Even Saffin’s plot was more about the metaphor than the doomsday scheme.

I’ve been fine with that, because I’ve really enjoyed what they’ve done with the last few films. But I have missed the kind of thing you’re both on about here, and I’d like to see more stuff like that back again. Bond investigating a big business type and uncovering their evil plan. One upping them
over cards or some other game, working undercover, snooping around at night to gather intel. More spy stuff like that would be cool.

female villains. We have not had any - not even a henchwoman - in the entire Craig era.

She wasn't a very memorable one but you did have Le Chiffre's girlfriend who poisoned Bond in CR

Yes, true. I completely forgot her for the moment. My bad. Valenka...
  • Darker tones and gritty realism and don't let Bond become the one man who saves the world and resolves all of the major problems again....bring it down to earth. These kinds of films in the series do better and age better.

Bring back David Arnold and also David Gassner.

Sick and tired of darker tones and gritty realism had more than enough of that, time for some fun and escapism again. The world is depressing enough as it is, let's have something light in our filmed entertainment
