Brosnan is definitely one of my favorite Bonds, and favorite actors as well. He should have totally gotten a 5th movie...hell, he should have been offered the job sooner and wrapped up with 6 or 7 like Connery and Moore

That's funny. To me, he should never have been given the role at all!!

He at least looked the part, probably more so than any other Bond actor aside from Connery

    Not really!

    Re-read the novels

Brosnan fits the basic template of cinematic Bond, but I don’t see Fleming’s Bond in Brosnan. For one thing, Brosnan is too smooth.

Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale (The Novel) - Chapter 5 "He is very good-looking. He reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless in his..."

Tell me how any of the actors aside from Connery even come close...but starting with the simple descriptive features from head to toe, let's start with black hair...

I know I post this image a lot, but man, Jason Masters got it right:

Bottom left I think was Masters' first concept, and bottom right was his final image. Definitely worth checking out Vargr and Eidolon.

From a purely physical view, I'd say Dalton is the closest to looking like Hoagy, which is one of The most specific descriptions Fleming gave to his spy.

Brosnan looks nothing like a cruel version of the American musician.

Dalton has that similar long nose, thin, cruel lips... Dalton wasn't only the most handsome actor to play Bond in my opinion, he really seems (subjectively), to be closest to the Carmichael description.

Craig looks like Hoagy Carmichael and that's in part why they chose him to film Casino Royale.

The sketch looks like a flattering version of Fleming is my thought.

Fay Dalton's artwork in the Folio editions is pretty on the money when it comes to interpreting the text. In the early books she didn't feature Bond's full face, but she does in the later editions, and I have to say it's very close to what I see in my mind's eye when I read Fleming. This is from YOLT. And if you cover the top part of the face up, it's almost Tim Dalton!

Fay Dalton's work is amazing, truly.

Fay Dalton's Bond = Timothy Dalton...

I don't entirely agree...but maybe if he would have dyed his hair for the roll...he dyed it super blonde for another movie so I know it wouldn't have been an issue...but I prefer Brosnan, and I think his younger self definitely fit the part, maybe less a few more chiseled features

Bottom line on looks: Dalton IS James Bond. Others just pulled it off well, here and there is all.

The first time I even saw a photo of Dalton, I knew he was James Bond. Just...yes: that's Bond.
Not sure Craig would've suited dark hair, though - it didn't really work too well in Sylvia.
  • I don’t really see any of the actors bearing any kind of resemblance to Hoagy Carmichael, then again, it’s not like I picture Hoagy Carmichael when I read Fleming. It’s mainly Connery. But having said that, I will go ahead and say that Dalton slightly resembles that Daily Express Illustration commissioned by Fleming...

And that Fay Dalton artwork is superb.

How did this thread about appreciating Brosnan's work get overrun by Daltonites?
Can we put a new rule in place that if any other Bond is mentioned in this thread, you also have to ssay something nice about Brosnan?

Personally I don't see Fleming's Bond as Dalton. 'He's very good looking.....' certainly describes Brosnan. He may not come over that cruel, but his incarnation is hardly the tough-as-nails Bond Fleming wrote about in the fifties, and even Connery lost that edge by the time of DAF.

I was wondering the same thing, but then again I remember Brosnan Bashing seems to be a popular thing to do these days.

Well, that seems to be a trend coming back with the tediousness of an unloved season.. I thought we left all that behind after Craig's first two films. Brosnan mey not be the best Bond, but he doesn't deserve that either.

There's a great bit in Goldeneye when Bond is setting the mines, someone fires at him and Bond just tilts his head out the way like it was nothing. Just another day at the office, great moment for Brosnan's Bond highlight reel

I watched Goldeneye with my nephew last week and I remembered how much I love that film

Now that I've somewhat grown accustomed to Craig despite the wrong hair color, I'd say that he and Brosnan are tied as the 2nd best Bonds after Connery...no less no more

Unless I missed something, I didn't see Brozz bashing; I (not a Dalton-ite), and other's were remarking on appearance of Bond as described by Fleming. Some, like me, think Dalton (subjectively), seems to look far more closer to the Carmichael description than the other Bond actors. That's not bashing Brozz

None of the actors do, we’re all allowed to have our preferred takes on the character. It just seems that any opportunity people have, they’ll take a swipe at Brosnan. And yeah, perhaps the observations made against Brosnan not looking Iike Fleming’s Bond are true, but for someone to instantly reply “I don’t think he should’ve been given the role at all” is exactly the type of stuff I’m talking about when I say “Brosnan Bashing”, and yeah perhaps it’s in good fun, but imagine the reaction if someone said the same of Dalton or Craig? Its just tedious at this point.

I think the only actor who rarely gets a swipe is Connery— and even then I have to assume I’ve read one or two. Brozz is not special in this regard.

It's obvious no one here is being paid to cast actors to play Bond, so we all have only our opinions to share. I think the main thing to remember is that no one is likely to fit the exact mold of what Ian was going for when he described the character. Based on his description having a likeness to Carmichael that could have included many things aside from just his looks. Connery came close. Dalton and Brosnan came close as runners up to Connery, and then a not too distant 3rd would be Lazenby, no other actor (Moore, or Craig) resembles the character's literary description, you can literally stop at the hair color on all of them no need to examine further. Both may have had a chance if the directors would have had them dye their hair. I imagine it is rather difficult for the studio to cast the perfect fit, I assume there is no warehouse full of middle aged British male actors that actually resemble Carmichael that can easily play the part on a whim. I think all of the chosen actors did the character justice in their own ways, but I don't think I'd ever agree to changing the dynamics of the character just because of how I felt about an actor that didn't look the part but happened to act the part decently. Being a fan of art and having produced some art myself, I have a respect and admiration for works of art in their original state and no one should purposely try to change that.

Yes but to come into a thread where it’s supposed to be appreciating the work Brosnan does, and bash the man to get a reaction is a different case. Imagine if somebody went onto a Daniel Craig appreciation page, and then all of the sudden started trashing the man and his abilities to provoke a reaction, I can tell you it would sure annoy the hell out of me. Being the Internet, I know this’ll never happen, but I’m just tired of tearing down one actor just because they don’t match ones preferences. I love all the Bonds, and my appreciation for each of them only grows over time, but alas, this is life I suppose.

It just kind of happened on a NTTD thread, so....

Edit: there will always be the drive-by posters who fire off some vitriol to whip up a frenzy. A lot of them on these threads have aimed their wrath at Craig, rapidly spew some weird and strange critique about Craig and vanish into angry hibernation until the next time (mendes4lyfe is great at this).

Just call them out for bad behaviour and move on.

Brozz definitely is my least favourite Bond, but I can also see, as Bond fans, we owe him a debt of gratitude since he took over at a time when the corporate media was trying to bury Bond-- that the series was past its best before date; the Wall had fallen, so Bond has no one else to be pitted against.

Brozz made Bond relevant and brought him into the post-Soviet era.

He may be my least favourite, but he's no less important to the James Bond series

So that doesn’t make that okay at all either. It seems to me from what I’ve read on all the threads that there’s an unhealthy habit of throwing shades towards a particular actor because other people are trashing the actor that you prefer, and I’m sick of that tribalism. Whenever Dalton or Craig get these criticisms on here, it looks like some kind of retaliation for the people who take petty cheap shots at Brosnan, and none of that is okay in my view. We can all be fans of Bond and specifics interpretations without tearing the other down. You like Dalton and Craig? Great I love them too, I also happen to love and prefer Brosnan’s Bond, but that doesn’t make me feel the need to tear anyone else down in the role. Other people should take note.

Exactly, I’ll sit here and happily defend Craig and NTTD, but I’m not going to agree with people who take low shots at Brosnan because their film/actor is being criticized in a way they don’t like.
