I really liked Malek’s portrayal of Safin. Creepy and just downright strange. Liked his subtlety too. My kind of villain.

Cheers for that. Contraband - interesting comments in there.

Craig: it was 2006. Barbara and I were sitting in the back of a car driving away from the Berlin premiere of “Casino Royale.” ... I went, “Can I kill him off in the last one?” And she didn’t pause. She said, “Yes.”

What was that conversation between you two like, Barbara and Michael, about how this is something Daniel wants to do and we’ve never done it before?

    Wilson: Well, I…uh…

Craig: Well, listen, listen, it (Bond's death) was 'no' for a long time. Don’t worry. I thought it was forgotten about, put it that way. I didn’t bring it back up again until this one.

So, looking at this Craig suggested it in 2006, BB presumably just humoured him but MGW said no and that was that for the next decade until Dan brought it up as a condition of coming back for one more. And EON agreed to it in order to get him back. Maybe not quite as cut and dried, but that seems to be the gist.

That is how I envision it playing out. For what it's worth.

Broccoli: It’s the ultimate sacrifice. As Michael says, it’s very appropriate because people in this line of work put themselves at risk all the time. The amazing thing was that the audience managed to keep this secret, and that’s really a testament, I think, to the Bond fans, that they didn’t want to spoil other people’s enjoyment by telling them the end of the story.

    Well...

    Thanks for sharing mate

MGW doesn't sound like he was on board with killing Bond as much Daniel and Barbara

And MGW just went a few more notches up in my estimation because of it.

He still made Blofeld Bond’s foster brother.

    Not a perfect track record.

Yes, MGW- in an alternative universe- can keep Cavill as Bond and his Brofeld concept, and I’ll happily take Bond’s meaningful death (for me) and the casting of Craig, 😝

I still wonder if it would have been better to have Billie Eilish cover We Have All The Time in the World over the end credits. I would have liked to hear that, I think.

I love OHMSS but NTTD leaned in a bit too heavily with the soundtrack, IMHO.

As long as it would have had to be the same bittersweet tone as the Armstrong version. I would have liked that. But I bet they stuck with Armstrong cause they thought fans would appreciate the deep cut.

Would've been good and made it into something a little more of it's own thing. Or Mark Lanegan - he's got just the reflective, world-weary voice for it.

That would’ve been just too depressing. The romantic and positive OHMSS song is a perfect counterpart to Eilish’s melancholy opening track, especially after such an heartbreaking ending. Louis’ song brought a warm cathartic quality that was absolutely needed in that moment.

Yeah for me it's a pleasure and grand experience every time in the theater, and now viewing the film at home. One of many fine choices by the filmmakers.

If I recall correctly that was a Craig idea.

I have seen NTTD at least 20 times by now. What I have kind of figured out is that the film is broken up into five sections, and each section focuses on an aspect of Bond's life.

Matera: Vesper (comes to terms with her death)
    Cuba: Felix (friendship)
London: Blofeld (encounters and kills his nemesis)
    Norway: Madeleine (love and parenthood)
    Island: MI6 (007 designation)

Every one of these sections is a setting for death. The acropolis. The boat. The prison. The Norway house. The island.

All that being said, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Interesting insight into the whole mess, thanks. It looks like it was Craig's thing mostly, and they went along with it. Lovely.

Not exactly. It looks like a term Craig negotiated in exchange for doing his fifth film.

I wish they'd have said "don't be so daft", and cast another actor.

And again, we get this 'Fleming almost killed him off' argument. He left one ending ambiguous, that's all.
The ending of FRWL has been trotted out loads of times to excuse the monumentally stupid idea of killing James Bond, and it makes no sense because - get this! - Bond didn't die in FRWL. Don't people understand a cliff-hanger anymore?
As Fleming wrote after FRWL was published, "it'll take more than a kick in the shin to kill off James Bond".

I’m glad Craig got his way. Gave us a supremely satisfying movie. Of course, a few aren’t too pleased, but they’re only a few.

For a much delayed film it had an incredible alignment of content to my thinking, timely and relevant.

Hard to imagine a proposed stand-alone mission measuring up and maintaining the interest it did and does.

Like it or not, standalone was never in the cards as long as Craig was involved.

Craig has a great understanding of how character and story works dramatically, and I'm glad they trusted his instincts. The end result that his insistence created was a beautifully transcendent work that took the Bond films to visceral levels of emotional storytelling it never went before, and frankly will never come close to again.

You're still going on about this? Most of us have moved on. But be my guest, stay angry, call the idea stupid and whatnot. It won't change a thing. And the way I see it, many here are quite pleased with NTTD and wouldn't call any of it stupid or daft. Don't get too annoyed with it. It's only a movie.

Yes, I should keep my trap shut because my opinion on a movie is in the minority. You're right.

That’s literally not what he said at all. You’re being a victim.

He said you keep harping on the same thing over and over again.

We all have minority opinions on certain things Bond. But I've been visiting this thread on and off and the same rant keeps popping up. It's even turned into a monologue as there's hardly any discussion or debate going on anymore. Look, I don't mind, but you're confusing your opinion with fact. Your opinion is constructed as "they should have... because ... is...". No, no one should have done or not done this or that. You don't like what was done. And that's fine, of course. But you continue to use words like "stupid" and "daft" as a means to seek justification for your anger. Fact is, you don't have to. You're entitled to your anger. But at some point, you might as well move on. The film is what it is and it's Craig's last so he won't be back. Skip this one if you want and anticipate something more to your liking next.

Besides, I get the "Fleming" argument frustration. NTTD is a movie; hiding behind Fleming won't help the haters nor the lovers. It's just a movie and we all bring our personal tastes to the game. Pure Fleming doesn't necessarily make a good Bond film; straying off Fleming Lane doesn't necessarily lead to a bad Bond film. I love the man and his work: he wrote a wonderful character, gave us excellent books to read and paved the way for something awesome. But sixty years ago, others took over when they transported Bond to the big screen and painted his adventures on an entirely new canvas. It's not a religion; it's not about 'What would Fleming do?' Fleming is not the ultimate judge and jury in debates over recent Bond films. That sort of talk can be quite suffocating.
