The Timothy Dalton Era - Rankings

edited December 2013 in Bond Movies Posts: 2,400
In an identical vein to @00Beast's series, I felt Dalton should be done even though there's only two films to work with; the opinions on these two films are so varied that I don't think any two posts will be exactly the same.

Movies
1. The Living Daylights (#2)
2. Licence to Kill (#4)

Tim's Performance
1. Licence to Kill
2. The Living Daylights (really a tie for me)

6. Braun
7. Colonel Heller
8. Truman-Lodge
9. Ed Killifer

Pre-Title Sequences
1. The Living Daylights
2. Licence to Kill

    1. The Living Daylights
    2. Licence to Kill
(A near-tie for me, but the car & score bump TLD up a bit higher. Both are at the top of my overall Bond movie rankings.)

    Tim's Performance
Tie- he was pitch-perfect in each IMO.

    Main Villains
    1. Franz Sanchez
    2. Georgi Koskov

    Henchmen
    1. Necros (dangerous!)
    2. Dario (creepy!)

    Pre-Title Sequences
    1. The Living Daylights (one of the best ever)
    2. Licence to Kill (not bad)

    Soundtracks
    1. The Living Daylights (John Barry RULES!!!)
    2. Licence to Kill (Michael Kamen did well enough)

    Main Title Song
    1. The Living Daylights by a-ha (it sometimes gets stuck in my head)
    2. Licence to Kill by Gladys Knight

    Girls
Kara Milovy/ Pam Bouvier tie; very different but both excellent IMO

    Allies
    1. General Leonid Pushkin (John Rhys-Davies is a true delight here)
    2. Q (I'm glad he didn't snore)

    Films

    1) LTK (#1)
    2) TLD (#2)

    Tim's Performance

Tie. LTK played more to his strengths but he has too many brilliant moments in both for me to pick one over the other.

    Villains

    1) Sanchez (very easy choice, Sanchez is my favourite villain of the series while the other two were average at best).
    2) Koskov
    3) Whitaker

    Henchmen

    1) Necros
    2) Dario

    PTS

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

    Soundtracks

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

Barry can't be beaten and TLD is my favourite score of his. I do like LTK's score though, especially Kamen's rendition of the Bond theme.

    Theme Song

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

Not a huge fan of either to be honest.

    Girls

    1) Kara (tough choice but I prefer her relationship with Bond, one of the few times in the series where I could actually believe that he cared about the girl).

    2) Pam (brilliant character, my favourite of the Bond's equal types and very fit)

    3) Lupe (she's hot but that's about it)

    Allies

    1) Q (Desmond is always brilliant and I love Q in LTK, it was nice to see that he really does care about Bond)

    2) Pushkin

    3) Saunders (I like him but he pisses me off when he's ranting at Bond for missing Kara)

    4) Sharkey

    5) Felix (Hedison, I think he's the best Felix and I like how he actually seems like he's mates with Bond but he's still not given much to do)

    6) Kamaran Shah

    7) Felix (Terry, just awful)

    This shouldn't be too difficult

    Films

    1) LTK (#9)
    2) TLD (#12)

    Tim's Performance

Tie. He's better at the classic Bond elements in TLD (though it wasn't his strong suit in either) and better at the harder-edged stuff in LTK.

    Villains

    1) Sanchez

    Colossal gap.

    2) Koskov

    Gap.

    3) Whitaker

    Henchmen

    1) Necros
    2) Dario

    PTS

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

    Soundtracks

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

    Theme Song

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

Both in the lower tier, but that's life.

    Girls

    1) Pam

    2) Kara (both Pam and Kara are very good characters, though, and are relatively close)

    3) Lupe (the second biggest block of wood in Dalton's era)

    Allies

    1) Q (Desmond is always brilliant and I love Q in LTK, it was nice to see that he really does care about Bond)

    2) Pushkin

    3) Felix (Hedison)

    4) Saunders

    5) Sharkey

    6) Kamaran Shah

    7) Felix (Terry, the biggest block of wood in Dalton's era)

I didn't rank him as an ally because he ends ups being a friend in need, and doesn't really help out...

    1) LTK (#7)
    2) TLD (#16)

    Tim's Performance

This is a tough one, but i have to go with LTK after all. His acting strength is better utilized there.

    Villains

    1) Sanchez, he is the best villain in the franchise. Period.
    2) Koskov
    3) Whitaker

    Henchmen

    1) Necros
    2) Dario

    PTS

    Theme Song

    1) TLD
    2) LTK

TLD is one of the best and LTK is one of the "worst".

    Girls

    1) Kara (Even though Kara can be annoying from time to time, it's all in the character and in the line of her innocence.

    2) Pam

    3) Lupe (She is unbelivably good-looking!)

    Allies

    1) Q

    2) Saunders

    3) Pushkin (I like him but he pisses me off when he's ranting at Bond for missing Kara)

    4) Felix (David Hedison)

Too close to call. Mr Dalton is bloody superb in both releases, TLD is a classic performance, while LTK is more animalistic.

Whoops, forgot to set the category. First time I've made that mistake.

For the record, I included (and ranked so high) the Gibraltar assassin because he doesn't speak a single word, yet I've never forgotten his face or that brilliant PTS since the first time I saw TLD. Very menacing and memorable character with no dialogue. Really shows how fantastic a film The Living Daylights is when even the no-name henchman is done brilliantly.

@StirredNotShaken: I'm glad you liked my thread idea! I should have opened one up for Dalton's era a long time ago; I suppose I thought since he only did two movies that there wasn't enough to rank, but I stand corrected!

    Movies
    1. License to Kill
    2. The Living Daylights

    Timothy Dalton's Performance
Not much distinction here between the two, in my opinion- he's excellent in both!

    4. Sharkey

    1. TLD- just beats LTK as it's more traditionally Bondian.
    2. LTK- this gets major points as a Bond film for being darker and different from previous entries. Both films are excellent.

    Tim's Performance
    1. TLD/LTK- cannot decide/tie. Interesting to see so many members rating Tim's performance in both films as equal. He was very consistent, like Sean in FRWL-GF.

    Main Villains
    1. Franz Sanchez- one of the best in the series IMO.
    2. Georgi Koskov
    3. Brad Whitaker

    Henchmen
    1. Necros- kicks ass until he gets the boot; has the best non-Bond fight in the series against Green-4.
    2. Dario
    3. Milton Krest- I think he's a great character; I quite like Zerbe as an actor too.
    4. Prof. Joe Butcher- bless his heart.
    5. Killifer- at least he died a rich man.
    6. Heller
    7. Gibraltar Assassin
    8. Truman-Lodge

    PTS
    1. TLD- annihilates LTK in this category, and one of the absolute best in the series.
    2. LTK

    Soundtracks
    1. TLD
    2. LTK

    Main Title Song
    1. LTK- perhaps a controversial choice, but I prefer the full length version of LTK over TLD.
    2. TLD- I like it, but don't regard it as one of the classics.

    Girls
    1. Pam Bouvier- if she asked me to...
    2. Kara Milovy- I wouldn't call her performance 'exquisite', but it was real- not just a dream.
    3. Lupe Lamora- not just a pretty face... she's got a pretty figure, too.

    Allies
    1. Pushkin- Rhys Davies shines in every role he's in.
    2. Q- unlike Bond, I was happy that he showed up at the hotel in LTK.
    3. Felix (Hedison)- the best Felix.
    4. Saunders- just when we start to care about him, he gets Necros'd.
    5. Kamran Shah- not a bad ally, he's got a few funny moments.
    6. Sharkey- he doesn't get to do much (except save Bond's life), but he's likeable enough.
    7. Felix (Terry)- I felt the scene with Felix wasn't needed, especially considering it was a piss-poor performance.

since we had the Connery and Brosnan rankings yesterday, I thought I'll bring back this thread as well:

    Movies
    1. TLD (#6)
    2. LTK (#8)

    Tim's Performance
    1. TLD
    2. LTK

    Main Villains
    1. Georgi Koskov
    2. Brad Whitaker
    3. Franz Sanchez
(in the villains game I ranked Sanchez higher because he's something of a franchise highlight as a villain. But in direct comparison, I like the other two more)

    Henchmen
    1. Gibraltar Assassin
    2. Killifer
    3. Necros
    4. Krest
    5. Dario

    Pre-Title Sequences
    1. LTK
    2. TLD

    Soundtracks
    1. TLD
    2. LTK

    Main Title Song
    1. TLD
    2. LTK

    Girls
    1. Kara Milovy
    2. Pam Bouvier
    3. Lupe Lamora

    Allies
    1. Pushkin
    2. Kamran Shah
    3. Saunders
    4. John Leiter
    5. Sharkey
    6. David Leiter
(David Leiter and Sharkey should be my favourites here, but I don't like the cruel way in which they're used for the plot)
