TNG explored the best ideas, it was brainy, philosophical and bad-ass. Voyager tried to emulate that and can be thought of as a continuation of TNG in terms of style and storytelling. Both have strong characters that are revisited over and over again to carve hem out.

The new shows, Discovery and Picard, are different. In Discovery, there are too many protagonists and too much of a focus on Burnham. Many of the bridge crew have not said much so far (and we are in series 3 already) and are there mainly to exchange glances while, at the same time, more and more crew members get added with not much more to do after 1-2 episodes centered around them. As mentioned before, some are annoyingly overacting (Stamets, Tilly).

Picard is a lost opportunity. I had hoped Patrick Stewart had come on board for a more intelligent and less action-based series. In the end, the storylines of STD s2 and STP s1 were identical - artificial intelligence trying to exterminate all organic life. How disappointing, considering the enormous range of interesting themes Star Trek had covered before.

To be fair, the cast dynamic of DISCO is a lot more like what it was in TOS. In the classic show, the only true main characters were Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, while DISCO's is pretty much just Burnham, Suru, Stamets and Tilly. They were always at the center of the stories, whereas the supporting players like Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, Chekov, and Chapel were really just there to play their parts much like Detmer, Owosekun, Bryce. Sometimes they would be given their moments, but they would never have stories that made them the protagonists. Much different from the Berman era, which had main casts of 7 to 10 people as back in the 80s/90s ensemble shows were much more common.

I don't mind Burnham being the main character, I think having a main character in a Trek show is quite a nice idea; especially one who isn't the captain. I'd have even quite liked it if we'd followed her through serving on different ships, but I guess that would be pretty expensive.
It's just that her constant crying and 'empathy' face wind me up a bit.

Who else has seen season two of Star Trek Discovery? If you haven't, you need to do so you can see why Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike has gotten his own Star Trek spinoff series (Star Trek Strange New Worlds)! Mr.Mount is drop dead gorgeous, sexy, a good actor (he was good on the AMC series Hell On Wheels), and a terrific successor to Jeffrey Hunter and Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike.

It was an uneven season, but Mount was one of the best things to happen to Disco and absolutely deserves his own spin-off, especially if it’s more like the classic format of TOS/TNG.

Agreed. Ethan Peck was a pretty good Spock, and I liked Rebbeca Romaine's Number One.

@MakeshiftPython: You forgot bridge crew member Gen Rhys and Commander Nhan who came over to Discovery from the Enterprise with Captain Pike and asked to stay on the Discovery on the season two finale.

As a kid, my favourite character was Spock, followed by Kirk. There wasn t anything memorable about the others. This has changed. I now find myself rooting for Scotty. A man of great integrity.

I'm so happy that Anson Mount got a spin-off series as Captain Pike! He stole season two right out under from Soqua Martin-Green.

During a sale on Amazon Prime, I managed to get all three seasons of the
original series, the remastered version. So far I'm half way through season
2 and I'm loving it. I doubt if they expected them to be scrutinised so much
when they were making them. As I'm watching them on a 55 inch 4k Television.
So it's very obvious now when the stuntman takes over during the fights, but it's
all part of the charm of the show.

Yeah the fight between Kirk and Khan is amusing, I have the Bluray Sets of the OG series, I previously had the DVD tin sets I do like the presentation and menus.

I love the remastered TOS but I miss the original effects.

I fondly remember watching TOS as a kid back in the late ‘80s when they would play episodes of it just before the premiere of a new TNG episode. Twenty years after they were made, I still loved the special effects.

This is why I got the blu-ray, as it includes the original effects.

I tend to watch the Remastered versions of TOS they did a great job of making it look retro, I occasionally watch the original episodes to compare and remind myself.

Watching The Trouble with Tribbles ( Series 2 ) I was reminded in the Bar fight
about the Deep Space 9 episode, Trials and Tribble-ations.

Brilliant, no Star Trek episode without some good old fisticuffs!

Just watched " Plato's Children " and can remember long, long ago. Getting
the special vhs release of the episodes not shown on Tv. As this episode
had the first interracial kiss on television, the other episode was " Whom
Gods Destroy " about an escape from an insane asylum.

My favorite TOS episode, no doubt about it. And as a huge DS9 fan (my favorite Trek series, my second favorite TV series ever), ‘Trials and Tribble-ations’ is just gravy.

There's a fanedit out there that combines the two episodes. It was actually how I first saw the DS9 episode.

Having slagged off the original series before, I must say that there are some good episodes in season 3.

I'd say 1/3 of the third season is pretty good. The rest... eh.
