Name the BOND TRACK that....005 summarizes your life (score discussion)

I thought it would be fun to do a discussion where we discuss our favorite Bond tunes from the film scores. We will have various discussions on different topics. For instance, to start with:

001 Name The Bond Track That Screams Bond...

For me, it has to be "This Never Happened To The Other Fella" from the OHMSS Soundtrack

For one, the track starts with a great rendition of the gunbarrel motif which segways into the Bond theme and soon thereafter it becomes that classic Barry version of the theme, with the notes portraying cat-like elegance. Cue Barry suspense and action themes to round it out and when the five minute track is up it has truly summarized the epitome of Bond.

  • EASILY, no song screams "Bond" more than Goldfinger, the song that set the tone for all the songs to follow.

A dull choice perhaps but I'm calling out the Bond Theme for this. I mean... honestly. ;-)

    Also: moved to music.
  • I could see that Dimi, very astute. I'm changing my vote to this although I stand behind Goldfinger as the best entry that contains lyrics and a vocalist.

Again, the James Bond Theme. It's really the only choice, if we have to pick one track.

I'd have to go with "Bond Back in Action Again" from Goldfinger. Blasts of the Bond theme to open, followed up with inklings of it in the incidental stealth like part of the track. Pure Barry.

    Great pick!

The Diamonds Are Forever title song.

Barry was on fire from 1967-1971.

    Another great call,

I won't keep this topic going as long as others, as this particular discussion designed to introduce everyone to the thread.

So why did you pick the ones you did everyone?

Because that scene from Goldfinger is one of my earliest memories of Bond.

The whole PTS of TB screams Bond, you see the grave with JB thinking it's 007 then the suspense builds when we along with 007 move to confront Colonel Jacques Bouvar. then in the throw of a punch, an epic fight ensues. Sean Connery and Bob Simmons and John Barry at their best. B-)
  • Great! I think we get the hang of it. Let's have some fun

002 Name The Bond Track That Belongs In Another Film...

Bill Conti's rendition of the Bond theme belonged in a psychedelic dance movie,

"Ride to Atlantis" Belonged in a cheesy romance movie from the 70's. Aside from "The Tanker," Marvin Hamlisch's score for TSWLM was never my favorite.

Fillet of Soul by George Martin belonged in an episode of Shaft.

    Love the score though.

  • Nina's OHMSS song "Do You Know How X-Mas Trees Are Grown" for me.

Only partially on topic, but MAD MEN just ended it's fifth season with two musical Bond references. First Don sits down in a movie theatre and we hear the music from Casino Royale (1967, natch) and then the episode ends to the haunting strings of You Only Live Twice - very cool.

And well chosen it was, to close out the season. The themes of a double life, resurrection, dreams vs. reality, all apply to Don Draper in his effortless '60s cool. And how ingenious it was to include Casino Royale as yet another doubling from 1967.

"Who will buy my yesterday's " from OHMSS!..... Pure Barry, smooth-sexy but fragile, and just one of many outstanding tracks from surely the ultimate Bond/Barry score!! But then there are so many cues to choose from by one of the main players in the Bond DNA!!!! :-B

Were there ever lyrics written to Who Will Buy My Yesterdays?

The James Bond theme is so obvious that I won't state it. GF was the first Bond film that I saw and not only had I never seen any other film like it I had never even *heard* another film like it. The swinging, swank music that accompanied the introduction to Miami Beach literally screams "BOND!" to me every time that I hear it. But so does the music during the raid on Fort Knox - repetitive and overpowering but not in an obnoxious way - it just reinforces how big and awesome everything is. The way that Barry was able to make everything in the GF soundtrack sound like it belonged to the soundtrack to GF and not any other film was a triumph, and the brass in that film set the template for what a lot of people consider the "Bond sound" to be.

No contest for me - the music that plays during Bond and Xenia's "race" near the beginning of GE. With some other non-Barry tracks I could kind of understant what the composers were going for, perhaps even trying to "update" the sound. But the music during that scene already sounded dated and cheesy and was such a "WTF?" moment that it totally ruined the scene. It sounds like it belongs to a film about breakdancing computer programmers from 1984.

Fantastic response. Exactly the kind of content I hoped this thread would produce!

To this day when I see that scene from GE I am take aback by the music. Jarring. Positively jarring.

@thelordflasheart's response finally gave me a track to nominate for the second topic. I too hate the music playing in GE while Bond is doing his driving, and it is as much a travesty as is the Beach Boys playing in FYEO. Atrocious.

.....well... I'd have to go with the utter lack of class, that belongs to Monty Norman and his score for Dr No, you could live without it and place it anywhere you like other than in Dr No, and had Barry from the start!? This small man is one over blown song writer who credits "himself" with the iconic JB theme, when any sane person knows full well that another JB was responsible for that theme!! Norman then and since then was never called upon again, which says it all...!!! :-B

"This never Happened to the other Fellow" from OHMSS
"Battle at Piz Gloria" from OHMSS
OHMSS had the best soundtrack of any Bond film but here are a few others:
    "Bond averts WW3" YOLT
"Dawn Raid on FT Knox" GF
    " Underwater Mayhem" TB

Topic 001- Man, you and I are kindred spirits! The GF theme right into "Bond Into Miami" blows me away to this day. Like the movie, this is quintessential Bond and Barry at his best in those two tracks. The brass and the strings are what make the "Bond sound" go.

Topic 002- It's no secret I think the GE soundtrack is easily the worst in the entire series, short of the title song which is well done and has a lot of Bondian and Barryesque flourishes otherwise missing from the rest of the film. "Ladies First" is one of the worst offenders amongst the assault on my ears and doesn't fit the movie. I wish Bono and Edge had done the rest of the tracks to be honest, they certainly "got" what Bond music should sound like and it would have been interesting to see what they came up with. Otherwise, I find GE to be a very enjoyable entry in the series.
