If I was forced to separate them, I think Sean would edge out on Pierce. But I really do like them both.

Here is how they ranked in the tournament thread:

    1 Sean Connery
    2 Timothy Dalton
    3 Roger Moore
    4 Daniel Craig
    5 George Lazenby
    6 Pierce Brosnan

Close between George and Pierce. Also close between Roger, Timothy and Daniel. Sean was supreme.

    1) Sean Connery
    2) Timothy Dalton
    3) Daniel Craig
    4) Pierce Brosnan
    5) Roger Moore
    6) George Lazenby

Though Connery will always be the best Bond, Dalton has quickly become my favourite interpretation of the character.

These are purely in my order of favourite's, not who I think was the best Bond. I think most people would objectively give that to Sean Connery.

    1. Moore
    2. Connery
    3. Brosnan/Dalton (depends on my mood)
    5. Craig
    6. Lazenby
  • 1. Timothy Dalton
    2. Sean Connery
    3. George Lazenby
    4. Daniel Craig
    5. Pierce Brosnan
    6. Roger Moore

Dalton gave two excellent performances that were the most accurate to the book which I enjoy the most. Connery's charisma and status as the original can't keep him lower than second. Lazenby played a brutish Bond who at the same time was visibly emotional in a movie that I class my my favourite of the series so he gets into number 3.

Craig will be in the top three if the new release lives up to it but Spectre was a massive disappointment and one of the worst of the series to me. Maybe the only reason he decided to stay on despite his past public comments of seemingly being fed up of Bond is to go out on a high.

Brosnan was perfectly fine but his performances and films were a little generic. The uniqueness and traits of Bond were a little lacking. And finally Moore whose light-hearted take on Bond led to some fine lines but too flippant, too over-exaggerated and his longevity added little to the series. I get that for a generation who for over a decade saw him as their introduction to Bond, he will be their Bond, but he didn't get wiser or more serious with age. A comedic touch to Bond would have been fine for three films but he overstayed his welcome and it was no surprise his successor felt the need to take a step back because we didn't have a serious Bond for a long time. Moonraker was a joke of a film and more in kind with the satire spy pictures made to take the mickey out of Bond.

I applaud your choice of number 1.
Dalton is the best for me too!
Your a little hard on poor Rog though, not the best, but he was entertaining and had great movies, i would certainly never put him below Brossa!

@Boycott I’m totally with you on Brosnan. He felt like he was walking through the motions. I’ve struggled to think of something he brought to the role that was unique or new, like all the others before him did. Shooting and dodging a million bullets? Jumping from explosions? Is that all he had to offer?

I don’t quite agree with you on Moore. Even if his style of Bond is not entirely my cup of tea, he was a real charmer, witty as all hell, and he (unlike Brosnan) lit up the screen.

Maybe so. I don't think Moore was bad don't get me wrong but I feel he was very lucky to have the role as long as he did. His last three films didn't do anything for me and a little too gimmicky with the gadgets and techno effects. Although I suppose that was the style of the day.

I imagine Brosnan does better for the casual viewer who didn't watch all the previous films and/or read the books. His Bond could have been just another action film under a different name which commercially would have done well but would have been forgotten about quickly. There were quite a lot of those types of movies being pumped out in the 90s. Bond's supposed to stand out above the crowd and his just didn't do it.

Yeah, definitely. Goldeneye was my first Bond film, back when I was 16, seeing it in the theater. Even after getting into some of the older entries with Connery and Moore back then, I ranked Brosnan second. But the more I got into Bond, discovering Dalton and Lazenby, the arrival of Craig, the more I viewed Brosnan with a critical eye. It didn't help that his films following GE gradually dipped in quality. Reading some of the Fleming novels played a big role in my rating of each actor. The more I learned, the less I liked of Brosnan and his era.

First time in this thread for me. I've been wondering how to rank, but have decided to go with my 'best to worst'.

    1. Sean Connery
    2. Timothy Dalton
    3. Roger Moore
    4. Daniel Craig
    5. Pierce Brosnan
    6. George Lazenby

If I was to rank with my favourites then the list would be different. As it is, Lazenby only bottom because of being in the one flick and being inexperienced. However, he stats in one of my top 3 Bond movies. Roger Moore will always be my favourite, despite not thinking he is the best.

Connery does a really good Roger Moore impression there.

It's been awhile since I've ranked them but I'll try to give some reasons for my ranking as well. Sorry about the long post

    1. Daniel Craig
Sacrilege!! I'm sure some of you disagree but to me Daniel Craig is James Bond.
He may not look like the description Fleming gave but he does embody the character perfectly. You can see the determination in his eyes and you can believe he has lived that life. He's added elements to the character the same way Connery and Young did to Bond in the 60's. He made Bond a human being again, like Dalton did after Moore. He is the only actor that has a presence when he is on screen the same way Connery had and he brings that cool swagger, but he's rough and rugged which women find attractive. He's the most convincing of all the actors in action and fight scenes.
When he was announced I thought they made a mistake, then I heard him speak and I was like bloody hell he has a commanding voice for Bond, it's one thing no one ever mentions about the character, is how important the voice is. The scene that won me over to his Bond, was the scene after the stairway fight in Casino, it was like getting a peak behind the curtain, watching Bond have to calm himself and lick his wounds. I remember watching the film at the cinema with my dad, turning to him and saying that is James Bond.

    2. Sir Sean Connery
When you think about James Bond, you think about Sean Connery. He was a superstar in the role and brought the character to life, if only he would have been on his A game and stayed on for OHMSS, if only. He's an exceptional actor who brought elements to the character that weren't realised in the novels, that are now considered vital aspects needed to be James Bond. He just has a confidence, a swagger and such a presence on screen that is just so cool and such a great trait in a leading man. He made James Bond the man every man wanted to be and the man every woman wanted.
Let's be honest, who doesn't say Bond, James Bond in a slight Scottish accent

    3. Timothy Dalton
To me Timothy was the perfect casting choice after Sir Roger, he made James Bond a man again and not a cartoon character. He brought a much needed intensity and raw edge to the character that was needed to make sure the series survived for decades after him. The way he throws himself into the action is so exciting and real, it always has you on the edge of your seat. The only place he falls short for me, is in the charming and cinematic aspect of the character, he isn't really a ladies man, but neither was Fleming's Bond. I just wish it didn't look so forced in Licence.
He is probably the most faithful adaptation of the Fleming novels which I hope will be his legacy from the series.

    4. Pierce Brosnan
I think why I rank Pierce above Sir Roger, is because he was the Bond I grew up with. Admittedly there is definitely some form of nostalgia there. He embodied the physical representation of the character perfectly, if only he would have been a bit stronger and most intense as an actor, he could have been higher on my list. As I look back now especially having had Craig as Bond for 15 years, it made my see how unconvincing Brosnan was in the action and fight sequences. But as Bond in general he was great, especially at being suave, that's were he was at his best. Goldeneye will always hold a special place in my heart

    5. Sir Roger Moore
I realise how blasphemous this must be but allow me to explain. I was born in 95 so I came to Sir Roger's portrayal probably after seeing Austin Powers, and even though Roger is a gentlemen and he really is charming in the role, I can't look at them films without cringing at the self parody of them I realise they reflect the times they were made but surely they most have known this wasn't the right direction. The producers focus more on the gags and less on the incredible stunt work which is so frustrating, because some of the best stunt work happens during the Moore years.
I just wish Sir Roger would have played at more straight because when he did it was brilliant, one of my favourite moments of him as Bond is in TSWLM, when cuts XXX mid sentence when she mentions his wife was killed. It's such brilliant acting and so in tune with Bond the character, I wish he would have done it more. Sir Roger was a wonderful actor though and a credit to the series, his version of Bond is just not my favourite.

    6. George Lazenby

Simply put, this guy should have never been Bond

@Jordo007 Fantastic words about Daniel Craig. He and Sean Connery are the embodiment of James Bond. I've always said Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and (to a lesser extent) Brosnan all excelled in one aspect of the Bond character, but Connery and Craig blew them all away in ALL aspects and they were the only actors to bring a certain kind of badass swagger to the part. They are the 007 masters.

I still rank Connery at the top though, he was the foundation of absolutely everything I associate with James Bond. And well, if it weren't for him, I don't know if I'd be here, still raving on about the character and his world, 25 years later.

My ranking remains unchanged, and it probably always will be this way:
    1. Connery
    2. Craig
    3. Dalton
    4. Lazenby
    5. Moore
    6. Brosnan

Yes, I'm one of those that loves Lazenby. OHMSS wouldn't really be the great film it is without him.

Lazenby in second place? Niven on there at all, and above Dalton too? That's definitely surprising.
