Review for James Bond 3. They’re always positive.
  • Making my way through LALD now. It never occurred to me how much I didn't like the artwork in Casino Royale. Way too shadowy and inconsistent in the character designs. LALD is much better, and I think it helps that I read the novel recently so it's a nice companion piece. Plus I couldn't help but notice a very nice panel involving Solitaire ^:)^

I'll be honest. JB #3 is OK. It still has room for improvement...

But did anyone feel that Bond's voice is off? Maybe not so much the actions, just his dialogue.

I will say this, the new team of artists do a much better job than Gapstur. The panels have more life to them and don't feel as bland. The faces are more expressive. Even though i'm not sure why they have to switch artists every couple of issues now.

It is a bit better than the first two, but the concept is still flawed.

I finished Oddjob, part 1 (chapters 1-6). It feels like John Gardner wrote it. There are more plot twists and character betrayals than Icebreaker.
  • For those that have read this new series so far, how does this compare to the Body?

I wonder if Solitaire is coming with Mr. Big.

Depends on how you felt about The Body. I'm more forgiving than some on this thread when it comes to attempts to do something different with the series, but even I was shaking my head by the end of that storyline.

The new storyline is much better. Not perfect...but it still beats The Body by a country mile.

I finally got around to the LALD graphic novel. What can I say that already hasn’t been said? It was great, EON has a lot of material to use for the future. It was very colorful in illustration, which helped, Bond adventures should be colorful in design. Bring on Moonraker and others, Dynamite!

I don't think i could compare them, but they both miss the point completely for me.

It's different to 'The Body'. I'm one of the few that don't mind 'The Body'. It gets a lot of hate/flack but I can appreciate that they tried something different and it just didn't work out.

007 2019 is picking up slowly. Still not great but it remains to be seen. If it carries on with the trajectory it could be pretty good in the end.

Next issue should be out soon, right?

EDIT: TBH, I'm just really looking forward to Reflections of Death now...

I guess I'm pretty alone then. For me The Body is the best of the lot. It's experimental and different, but Bond as a character is front and centre and spot on. If the character of Bond is executed perfectly, it's all I need. I'd rather have that than most of the other storylines that either get the character of Bond completely wrong or just puts him in a stereotypical (almost parodical) story.

Great post, TBH. But it's like that old saying... one man's poop is another man's treasure.

So true! You find your own way trough the jungle that is the Bond universe, that's what I love about it.

OK wow... i did not see that coming, consider me intrigued.

Dynamite has just delivered one of the best Bond issues i have seen so far.
This is an eye-gasm from start to finish. Absolutely stunning.

Artist Erica D'Urso is undeniably the star here, and should have done the whole book from the start (Sorry, Gapstur, but you're not even close). And a big shout out to colorist Roshan Kurichiyanil.

This stuff is Roger Deakins & Linus Sandgren level good, i'm not even kidding. It's Solstice level amazing, if not better.

The Story is a HUGE improvement over the last couple issues, and goes to show once more (after LALD) how absolutely invaluable the art is to a good book. It feels like a restart in many ways, thanks to the art as well. Bond is THE STAR of the show, and is as cool, glamorous, flirty and expressive as he should have been from the start, i'm getting hints of early Connery.

Finally the whole plot about art-forgery has paid off. As a big art lover i was pretty underwhelmed by it so far, but they finally used it to bring Bond to some of the most glamorous and lavish scenarios and places. Mesmerizing to look at.

This is the first issue in this run that has earned it's series title of "James Bond".

Why not like this from the beginning???

I would absolutely love for this book to continue in that vein, but i've been burned one too many times by Dynamite. All i can do is hope now. And PLEASE Dynamite, STOP switching artists every 3 ISSUES from now on FFS!!!

What is also kind of strange:
Mr. Big is still nowhere to be seen, after 4 issues. So what the hell was that social media video by the authors all about? I expect they have already outlined issue 7 to 12 and he will be the Villain in the next run. Basically the same as in Oddjob->Goldfinger.

FOR F***'s SAKE DYNAMITE! YOU HAD ONE JOB!

Ohhh great, just great... On top of that, Eric Gapstur is coming back for the next issues 8-|
I enjoyed it while it lasted...

Oh thank god it's not Eric Gapstur who is continuing with the new series, but this guy Brent Peeples... He's no Erica D'Urso, but at least he's no Eric Gapstur either.

Even though i find it pretty idiotic to switch artists every 2 ISSUES now, i just have a shred of hope back that this series could turn out good. Don't f this up Dynamite, Seriously.

But first, Reflections of Death... if they don't delay it again, which i'm pretty sure they will.

Did they finaly thought that « James Bond » was a bad, stupid & uninspired, title ? The hardcover seems to be nommed "James Bond: Big Things" : https://www.amazon.com/James-Bond-Things-Vita-Ayala/dp/1524119113/ref=sr_1_2?qid=1584075649

Hmm, interesting. Not that this one is that much more inspired either, but at least it's a start. This series will definitly be running for more than 6 issues. Probably 12, like the previous.

Diamond Comics has updated their solicitation pages, and... Bad news, I'm afraid, no Bond comics planned for june. And according to what I've read, no Bond comics for july either :

Hopefully Big Things or their other upcoming James Bond volumes won’t be cancelled or pushed back still. Dynamite does that enough!
