    ‘1917’: How Production Design Captured the Trenches in What Looks Like a Single Shot
    https://indiewire.com/2019/12/1917-production-design-dennis-gassner-1202198623/

    Production designer Dennis Gassner first became aware of “1917” when he received an unexpected email from director Sam Mendes after a roadtrip to Alaska: “Do not do the Bond film. I have a film — very ambitious — sending script.” When the script by Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Caims arrived by email, he read it quickly on his cell phone, and was instantly intrigued about the World War I adventure.

    So Gassner turned down “Bond 25” (“No Time to Die,” when Danny Boyle was still signed to direct) and threw himself into Mendes’ passion project.

    Absolutely-- just goes to show, once again, that she-- and her team-- are the best gatekeepers to this franchise (spin-offs would be the norm if one of these huge studios took over. And that would water-down James Bond).

    Some interesting bit of information in the Empire article, some of them confirming assumptions we made since a lot of time.

    - Barbara is the one who suggested the title;
    - There’s an action scene in Jamaica - perhaps a continuation of the chase shoot out after the party - with Bond on a seaplane escaping police and flying through a series of big cranes,
    - Craig last shot as Bond will be him running down a corridor;
    - The article implies that Bond dying in this one is unlikely;
    - Safin comes from Swann’s past and has been described as someone “who’s lived in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to take the position he thinks is his rightful one: running the underworld”. Sounds like Safin wants to fill the power vacuum left by Blofeld, or just destroy SPECTRE (killing his members) in order to run his own thing;
    - The relationship between Bond and Swann will be the main emotional core of the film. A very complicated relationship. Bond will suffer isolation, loneliness and betrayal all over again. The film will dive into Swann character a lot, like how is growing up with a father like Mr. White or who’s her mother. Bond thinks she betrayed him because of a revelation from her past.

    So guys, if you don’t like the idea of another Bond film injected with personal stuff, secrets from the past and emotional resonance from Bond’s perspective well, probably NTTD isn’t your cup of tea...

    Some of the big talking points fromt he Empire article:
    • It was Broccoli who came up with NTTD as the title. She thinks she may have remembered it from her father's film, though it wasn't a specific reference.
    • Bond attends Blofeld's birthday party in Cuba. Here, Blofeld makes an announcement 'Welcome to the spectacular end to our pariah. Goodbye, James.
    • Daniel Craig was dissatisfied with Spectre and had a specific idea in mind for his return.
    • Cary Fukunaga campaigned for the job of director.
    • Safin and Madeleine have some connection from their pasts.
    • Safin is trying to be the king of the underworld.
    • Women will be important in the film. More than mere window-dressing.
    • Bond and Madeleine's relationship is central to the film.
    • Nomi will start the film as 007
    • The journalist says that Bond will not return to MI6 at the end. The big ideas are that Bond will either get married or die.
    • Daniel Craig thinks the series should reboot after he leaves.

    Everything in this article and the whole tone makes me think that Bond is a goner in this film. If executed well, then I'm into it.
  • If they 'kill off' Bond then it'll completely spoil the film for me. Bond just doesn't die 25 films in then come back in a 26th.

    LOL Craig wasn’t dissatisfied with SP. Maybe you are, not him. He even says: “I’m very satisfied with it”.

    That’s what the article really says regarding him coming back: “Perhaps there’s simply a feeling of unfinished business”. In other words, Craig felt there was room for exploring the character and Bond’s world even more. Which is even later confirmed by Barbara, when she says that you don’t cast Waltz as ESB just for using him once.

    Then, killing Bond was BOYLE big idea and the article implies that seems an unlikely finale for NTTD, since Fukunaga is telling a completely different story.

    If Boyle's big idea really was killing Bond, well that's ridicolous. Not because I'm against Bond dying, that's not the point.
    It's just that Boyle talked of his idea is if it was something the movie would revolve around (e.g. the idea that Bond would spend most of the movie as a prisoner), not just a gimmick like Bond dying at the end. I don't know, wanting to do a Bond movie only because you want to end the movie with his death (or Bond getting married or Bond joining the villain at the very end or whatever) sounds like a weak reason to decide to do a Bond movie.
    The point is, your reason to make a Bond movie should be because you've got a good idea to kick off the plot, not something to end it. Usually the selling point of a movie is the premise, not the ending.

    I hope I made myself clear.

    Probably the first time a Bond film's ending looks a Big deal. It used to be the icing on the cake then....Bond kills the bad guy, then kisses the Girl with a witty one-liner.

    After Daniel things need a change of direction it will be interesting where they go I say it will be a mix of Connery seriousness and Brosnan Bond formula I can't see them going all goofy or going dark. And its intriguing that they brought up Swann's mother did we know she had a mother you think her mother is Irma Bunt?

    Yeah that's what she said just because it was the last thing they filmed doesn't mean it will be the last part in the movie it's hard to know what will be the last part in the movie. @Zekidk

    It’s quite intriguing. We know White divorced “long ago” but yes I believe her mother will play a role within the Swann/Safin connection. Point is, Swann was saved by Safin, but then? What’s her secret connection with him beside that? Maybe the mother has something to do with this. But I don’t think she will be a known Fleming character...

    I think he was, yes. For obvious reasons. I had nothing to do with it, though. Wasn't even here at the time. Nothing more to say about it.

    About Barbara, these latest words from her will definitely make for a better sleep come the night. Bond films should be exactly what she says: events. Eagerly awaited cinematic events. And it's good to see she's aware that some are better than others. What a lovely, grand, smart lady.

    Anyone wanting the Bond series in any other hands than the family that nurtured it is not wanting what is best for the legacy and continuation of this enduring character we all love.

    Those that want this have an idealised version of Bond they want for themselves, Bond isn't some fanboys wet dream it is totally unique within cinema history, as soon as it loses that aspect then it is just another franchise.

    Barbara's words are both comforting and reassuring, no as she said some films have been better than others and she took a different approach to it but I think Cubby would be very proud of what both Barbara and Michael have done since he passed, how could he not be?

    Well there is the crux because EON aren't going to let that one out of the bag themselves are they now if this is true.

    I personally think this is unlikely but I guess we'll see, you've never really been a fan of this Bond and era, maybe the next guy will be more to your liking and the direction the films all go in.

    We all have the era's we have to endure if we want to keep watching this character, mine was Brosnan's and your is Craig.

    Thank you for sharing the Empire article @00Dalton7

    The few things I took from this, Craig saying he "I did most of the movie with a broken leg" when talking about Spectre. Which is crazy, credit to him
    It's interesting that Fukunaga brings up Madeline Swann's mother in the interview. Wonder if that's a part of the story at all?

    Not sure what to make of this quote from the article,
    "Globe spanning plot that will see him, along the way, constantly flanked and outfoxed by a group of strong, powerful women."
    Seems a bit odd to mention Bond being constantly flanked and outfoxed by these ladies. Not sure what to make of it, perhaps it's just good PR by the producers to mention these amazing, beautiful actress's in the film.
    I just hope it doesn't turn into a Scooby gang, sort of thing that dogged Spectre. As I don't believe there is nothing more exciting that Bond alone using him wits to go up against the enemy.

    I do love what Fukunaga said about the action,
    "Hopefully the action is exciting, but it was important that it felt threatening. Rather than thinking about the action before the story, how could the story drive the action"

    This quote has got me massively excited for the action in this film. I feel like Fukunaga really understands that the action has to get your blood pumping but still make you marvel at the technical aspect of it, without taking you out of the film.

    I really do get the feeling Fukunaga is the right man for the job and he really understands what makes a Bond film magic. I can't wait for this film, since the trailer was released the hype train has really done it's job and got me excited for the film.

    Yes 00Dalton7, thank you for posting all those pages. However I take issue with what Broccoli said in that piece about aiming for Bond's heartstrings in order to really hurt him: "We always like to have a very personal trial for him (Bond) emotionally..." Oh really? I can think of several pre-Craig Bond films that aren't taxing for Bond emotionally. Why does there have to be a focus on Bond's emotions? Is Broccoli trying to get more women to watch Bond films, or to feminize him? Yes he's human, but it's the job that's the focus for Bond, and this particular job requires taking emotion out of the equation! Broccoli can do what she likes, but I think this is something of a betrayal for the character; it's down to the story and writing. And haven't we had enough of the Bond soap opera elements with Craig--I know I have.

    I find the more emotional and dramatic it is, the more involved I get, which means the action is more exciting because I actually care what’s happening. For years Bond fans have been saying OHMSS is the best Bond film and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that it’s the one where he actually has an emotional journey. Do Bond fans hate the bit in FYEO where he visits Tracy’s grave? I don’t think so.

    @mtm I think why people like it is it's a normal Bond film with emotion not just emotion.
