  • It's been a bit quite on news recently, other than several delays, so I thought I will ask some questions. Does anyone think Andy Diggle will ever get to write a 3rd series? or will we ever see a Felix Leiter vol. 2? These are probably the two things I want more than anything but it's been so long that I'm starting to get worried. Thoughts?

I have no idea. Dynamite makes it seem like they want to "start over" the series for whatever reason, and they're already doing it a second time. Seems like some Marketing idea, i don't know.

Whether they'll pick up on any of the old storylines or writers/artists is anybody's guess, which is a bit of a shame. I am sure Diggle would be up for it, and i would think that he has an outline ready, judging by how Kill Chain ended.

So at this stage it's a waiting game. I am curious what they are going to do with this new Series starting in december. Will it be an traditional Bond adventure, or are they experimenting again with the structure like in Oddjob/Goldfinger?

I hope it will be at least better than Oddjob, which is really not much of a challenge.

I feel towards the end of odd oddjob / goldfinger bond started to play third wheel or more of a supporting character than main one. It disappointed me towards the end and that was my biggest gripe with it.

Also I wrote this on my phone so apologies if it's a weird post.

He was third wheel, pretty much after issue 3 or 4. It was my biggest gripe with it as well. Hope they won't repeat that mistake in the next series.

Hmm. Yeah. I can see it beginning there. It was absolutely downright shameless towards the end.

    Really disappointing.

Or you could say he was second fiddle after issue 3, and really became a third wheel in the last 3-4 issues.

I am still curious to see how they will resolve this story in the final issue, but i am not convinced yet about buying the hardcovers sadly.

    Haha. That's about right.

I think it's going to be more of the same which it shouldn't be that predictable but hey ho.

    Thanks Gerard.

God i hope that is not Moneypenny on the cover.
I hope she doesn't play a big part in this story.

Or is it that they are trying to get rid of Bond girls entirely now just to be uber-politically correct? Sh** i am getting paranoid.

Anyways, i hope this one will be good.

New Interview with the writing team behind the new Series, with a little preview at the end:

    https://www.comicsbeat.com/interview-vita-ayala-danny-lore-james-bond/

This makes me a bit more confident. Also this woman on the cover doesn't seem to be Moneypenny but rather an original character from what i could figure out in the previews.
  • I'm cautiously optimistic about this new series. I hope it's good, however their comments about wanting Angelina Jolie and Gillian Anderson as Bond has me worried about what they think Bond is. Still I'm not going to hold it against the series, and I did like the previews I saw.

Agreed, and their picks for the next Bond were cringy as hell.

Let's just hope none of that seeps into the writing.

Little update from Diggle about a possible 3rd storyline!

If they haven't asked him back yet, wtf are they waiting for?

Edit: Diggle was nice enough to respond to me:

Aaaaand Luca Casalanguida responded as well :)

Just a question for the ones that has read Oddjob comics soo far :
What's the point of the Golden Dragon intrigue ? Why melt it ? I'm lost
  • Posts: 5,772
    Simple :
Goldfinger is obsessed by gold, but only in its purest form. It doesn't matter to him how old, or beautifully crafted it is, the only thing that matters is gold. So he melted it so as to have the gold it was made of. Or in other words : yup, he's crazy that way.

Hum, seems logic that way, thanks you.

That last issue... nearly killed me.

So that concludes the Oddjob/Goldfinger storyline.

What a mess, and a fitting ending to a storyline that never seemed to go anywhere at all. I would rank it on par with The Body now.

It doesn't have the SJW undertones that The Body had, but we had to suffer for many more month through this.
  • oh dear that's disappointing! I've only read the first issue, but I'm waiting on the hardcovers to be released. I did like the first issue, but it left me with the impression that it could be the best or worst thing in the series. Oh well, at least we have LALD to look forward to then!

The first issue was the best, i loved it.
Having read the last issue today i was thinking about it, and how it was possible that it got so Bad. It's baffling.

There is not a single redeeming quality, especially about the last 5 issues, for me. Everything got progressively worse, the art, the characters, the story.

By the end we have 3 main protagonists, and not a single one of them is in any way interesting (and that includes Bond, as he's completely irrelevant here).

I'm afraid i won't be buying the Hardcover to this.

Re-read VARGR and EIDOLON yesterday, for the fourth or fifth time now. Still very good. I wish Ellis were brought back on board.

Wouldn't mind that either. He was solid.

Unfortunately it seems that Dynamite is progressively going down the 'woke' route with their new writers and content. At least for the new series they got coming out. And Ellis and his version of Bond was anything but PC.

Thankfully we still got the Fleming adaptions and Origin (if they choose to continue it)

Really disappointed with 'Oddjob'. What a dreadful series, it felt more like Archer than Bond. I don't understand why Dynamite have done away with Diggle and the Leiter series in favour of constant reboots from new writers.

I have now also re-read BLACK BOX and FELIX LEITER.

    HERE BE SPOILERS!

Both of these stories are set in Japan, though they are entirely unrelated. That said, I love Japan and I welcome all the Japanese flavours integrated into the fibre of both comic series.

BLACK BOX is a solid "sequel" to VARGR/EIDOLON, with perhaps a tad more video game logic than the other two and less of their incredibly well-staged action. The story feels like a simple routine exercise in modern spy lore, but not without a good measure of joy and sex appeal. The inclusion of a Garden of Death is a lovely nod to Fleming.

FELIX LEITER is the more interesting but in my opinion also the more conflicting of these two. It's good to see Tiger Tanaka as a Japanese James Bond in full action mode. At the same time, though, Leiter comes off as a bumbling buffoon who purposelessly hangs around with Tiger, lamenting a lost love while getting us barely any step closer to catching the bad guys. In the end, he always needs help from some deus ex machina, and that's never a good thing. In fact, the over-emphasis on Leiter's prosthetics becomes problematic fast, resulting in a serious hint of helplessness. Matters turn even worse when in the final issue, while seeking resolution, Leiter just flat-out has to talk to a man we've never met before, who then drops the word 'SPECTRE' for Felix to never pick up on again since it seems that this book will remain open-ended. That's it. The journey ends by concluding that Leiter has failed to find the bad guys and so he simply talks to someone who could have pointed him in the right direction from page 1. The final laugh goes to the girl, who has bested Leiter the entire story and in doing so, leaves me wondering why a book about Felix is just an account of a linear sequence of failures. His shining moments are too few to compensate for everything else. If I didn't know better, I'd say the writers just don't like Leiter and set him up for failure from the get-go. Too bad, really, since the story of a Japanese death cult falling under the control of SPECTRE has potential. But without a sequel book, there's not a lot in this story that makes us celebrate Felix Leiter as his own "American Bond" kind of hero. It's a strange experience reading this book. It's called "FELIX LEITER" but it should have been called "FELIX LEITER AND WHY HE'S JUST NOT GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES".

I've re-read HAMMERHEAD. Despite the rather predictable outcome, it's an enjoyable book. I also love the graphics and the dynamics of the action. Listened to the score for MR while reading and somehow, that fit. ;-)

Moving on to KILL CHAIN and THE BODY next. Then the singles and after that, ORIGIN and ODDJOB.

Jensen confirmed that he isn’t working on a MR adapatation. LALD will be his last. Sadly he didn’t mention if there even was a MR adaptation in the works.
