It Seems There Are More QoS Appreciators Than Thought Before

  • 007 Legends without a real Bond actor voicing Bond......picking a scene from DAD for the Brosnan years.....what were they thinking? Were they that desperate to forget about QOS or something?
  • Jeffrey Wright posting a picture from QoS on his twitter account was a really cool way to let fans know he's still around.

Maybe the games could have used him more but that's another story.

    That’s a fair assessment.

Quantum of Solace isn't as good as Casino Royale: the smart elegance of Craig's Bond debut has been toned down in favour of conventional action. But the man himself powers this movie; he carries the film: it's an indefinably difficult task for an actor. Craig measures up. It also features maybe the best pre title sequence in the entire series. It’s just a shame the gunbarrel doesn’t appear at the start.

I hate to break up the party but this thread is the forum equivalent of lets just give Quantum of Solace a hand shandy

I don't have the reservation that @RC7 has, I've already said it's top 10 but the way it's being talked about here, well I wonder what next hidden layers it's biggest champion is about to reveal to us.

Robert Towne did not write the script and this is not Chinatown, which is ironic considering the plot point it borrows.

I wonder where the Skyfall appreciation threads Getafix equivalent is?

I will say I do think there was an opportunity with SPECTRE to address QOS, they could have given the film it's due but still it was regarded as that embarrassing uncle we don't like to talk about. Even going as far as not showing Dominic Greene in the shards of glass sequence in the main titles that I can recall.

Both CR & QOS could have been used much more constructively within the screenplay if you wanted to tie the films together.

Myself and @peter will be addressing this ideas in a new project we've now agreed is a collaboration, a radical rewrite of SPECTRE.

Just some balance instead of this continued adoration of a film that was troubled from day 1.

Don’t be stupid. QOS is far superior to CHINATOWN

QOS and Chinatown are two different movies!

Chinatown dealt with HOW the water aqueduct got there in the first place while QOS was battling the IMPLICATIONS of monopolizing water through puppet coups.

QOS was seriously underrated by the fact that it dealt with realistic issues with a villain who looked more like a friend and philanthropist to the people....even the actor who played Greene said he modeled his character after real figures and the director made a wise choice not to let him have a scar or third nipple or diamonds in his face etc...

Someone on this board mentioned how Fleming-esque the Yusef's Aparment scene was....that's more of what we want: the original source's work. That's why Timothy Dalton movies have fans. Even though Dalton wasn't the best Bond actor, the loyalty to Fleming is what really worked in his favor. While I don't want to speak for everyone, most if not all fans either like TLD or LTK, and some like both of them...go figure!

Keeping Bond down-to-earth allows each movie to maintain itself after many years versus all these moves that were caused by "what's popular now" phases like Star Wars influencing the release of MR etc...

Is there any way to find out how much QOS made in DVD sales and also Streaming Service orders after its massive release?

    My Craig Bond ranking: CR-SF-QOS-Spectre

QOS is woefully underrated, and still Craig's best performance as Bond. It's just so rushed and has one of the worst villains of the series.

Gemma Arterton is wasted as well.

  • Jack Nicholson should play a Bond villain.
  • All said, I think that @JamesBondKenya can share a true thing after watching QoS over the years....

QoS made me enjoy the art of film again. The production set designer and the works of the crew made it into art in a way that makes one think it's a classic but is so modern that it doesn't get old and dated.

You have to admit, movies like SF and all those others like DAD just don't hold up and aren't really worth watching to learn something new each time.

If the Bond movies focus on being good films and the art of movie making and providing a good film as opposed to formula, they won't need to try in order to get nominated for awards. Every gimmick has an end, including the repetitive order found up to the movies like DAD.

What would keep the Bond actors from getting bored in the role is to focus on having a good movie done rather than some formulaic work which anybody can step into before they get offered other roles by more interesting directors etc.

QoS brought back the art of movie making and even people who don't rank it at the very top will agree that it's probably Craig's best performance. Melancholy permeates the film to the very cold snowy scene surrounding the buildup to Yusef's confrontation in the apartment.

Regarding the henchman.... Elvis actually was supposed to have more dialogue. His skull belt buckle is symbolic for Bond's state of emotion...Quantum caused and prolonged his pain.

But he did have a kick ass fight sequence,..whereas Elvis just fell down some stairs and lost his wig!!

Hinx did have the classic fight scene but Elvis was more enigmatic and you kinda see how badly he got tripped by Fields after the staircase incident.

So Field's death connects more personally to Greene because of what she did to Elvis. Greene had a way of adding insult to injury. His ego was at his finest when he called Bond and Camille damaged goods.

The ‘realism’ argument doesn’t wash, although it is often trotted out as false justification imo and not just in defence of QoS.

To suggest something is ‘realistic’, is one thing, but simply appearing ‘realistic’ isn’t enough. It has to resonate with the audience because of it. Not 6 months down the line when scrabbling for the positives, but in the moment.

No one came out of that film waxing lyrical about the water plot, because it was gossamer thin.

In the more ‘fantastical’ plots, or for arguments sake something those with a ‘global threat’, in the vein of the larger than life yarns of old (or traditional as some may put it), the audience accept the inherent ludicrousness. It’s part of the DNA established early on. The real battle is between two men, Bond and his nemesis. The threat can be secondary, propped up by a McGuffin.

If you’re going to break with tradition as that film aimed to do, and shift focus to a more ‘realistic’ approach you have to give it some weight. I’m happy for them to deliver a ‘realistic’ villain, (a slimy political type, as they inferred) but that inherently comes with its own issues because you shift the weight from a caricature style villain (ala Fleming) to one with shades of gray and put the onus firmly on the plot/threat. That threat then needs more attention, more tangibility.

A random dripping tap in desert does not art make.

I don’t think anyone has to admit that, actually. SF isn’t to everyone’s taste, but there’s no denying it’s one of, if not the most multi-faceted film in the series. There is nothing QoS does that can’t be found elsewhere and better, while the same can’t be said of SF.

As for DAD, while it is the perennial whipping boy (with very questionable production values) it does at least have a certain spark to it. QoS on the other hand has, as one reviewer pointed out at the time, Forster sucking all the vitality out of it.

I sometimes feel like certain fans (not all, obviously) have, through sheer force of conversational will, convinced themselves the film is something far more than it is.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Hinx either. I chose him over Elvis only because Elvis was pretty much non existent in QoS and because I enjoyed Bautista's performance, but overall the character was rather forgettable.
