I too, wish I could forget Bond's treatment of the child who saved his life on the boat.

As he had no money, and was out of time before the bad guys caught up with him, I think he really did the only thing he could. Should he have taken the kid with him & endanger his life so he could pay him later? Bloody tourist seemed to me to be his only option... ;)

Bond very simply should have known that turning one little knob on the fuel line was all that was needed to fix the problem with his boat. He didn't need the kid. He shouldn't have needed the kung fu schoolgirls. All he needed was a better script.
  • Oh, and re: the final confrontation with Scaramanga in the funhouse: the moment the Bond figure in the funhouse was revealed during the PTS, my mind jumped ahead of the film and I said to myself, "He's going to replace that dummy himself and use it to get the drop on Scaramanga." If a plot twist is THAT OBVIOUS to the audience, it's really a pretty lame plot twist.

    & lose two funny/outrageous moments?
Okay, let's change it with CGI. And while we're at it make Kananga's explosive death more realistic with heaps of bloody guts & body parts flying every which way.
Not much we could do for MR though... ;)

We could always show Drax's body in explosive decompression once he's pushed out the airlock...

But one doesn't explode in space, one simply puffs up a bit... yeah, that's do-able.
  • Actually, MR is another one of those Bond films that I've come to appreciate more (or as @delfloria would have it, "moore"...) as the decades have gone by. One of the central precepts of art criticism is to answer the questions, "what was the artist trying to do, was it worth doing, and was it done well?" From that perspective, (A) Eon was trying to do an over-the-top Bond film that took advantage of the outer-space trend that Star Wars has suddenly rendered so lucrative. (B) Was that worth doing? Certainly! (C) Was it done well? Mmmm --moderately so. One of my biggest objections to TSWLM (which most Bond fans will acknowledge as one of Roger's better outings as 007) was that Stromberg's desire to establish an undersea civilization wasn't very well established. Did his people even KNOW that they were intended to become the remnants of a decimated human race, living their lives in an isolated enclave? At least this time around, the villain's intent -- a new human civilization in outer space rather than under the sea -- is more fully developed.

I imagine walking up to OO7 in the middle of FRWL & telling him he'll some day be fighting in space with laser guns to keep a madman from creating a space civilization while preparing to end all life on Earth. He'd think I was certifiable. ;)

Yes, but imagine walking up to 007 at that same point & telling him that 60 years down the road, he'll discover that Blofeld is actually his step-brother. He'd ask you what you've been smoking and urge you to keep it out of Jamaica...

Someday, someone will tell us. Until then, we can only guess. My guess is, they were thinking: "Hey this is some pretty good $#!+ we're smoking. I wonder how I can smuggle some into Jamaica...?"

I have to confess my good vibes for TMWTGG. I just like the way it just seems a little different from many of the other films. Chrisisall mentioned several of them. LALD has the cooler motifs with the tarot and voodoo, just not a whole lot else. Somebody criticized it once as being just one long chase film and it does seem like Bond is being pursued a lot in this film and is rarely the one doing the chasing.

As to the criticism that Scarmanga's island only has the one guy working for him. Kananga has only a few guards in his underground establishment too and in the finale it's just him and Whisper, surely one of the least effective henchmen in the series, although he does the job in eliminating Charlie in the pimpmobile and distracting Bond in his hotel room while the snake is put in. Otherwise, he's just there to demonstrate a couch blowing up and pushed into a container by Bond.

Another thing that always bothered me about that finale, the production team took the effort and expense to build that monorail car and it just sits there, only getting mentioned. Was it even necessary considering it doesn't get used? Similar was going to the trouble to say Bond's watch could deflect a bullet at long range but don't do anything with it while instead introducing a function that wasn't explained with the mini buzz saw.

I think Bond would be mystified if you went up to him and said that because he hadn't even discovered who Blofeld was at that point. But it may help him get started on the investigation into him sooner.

    Sorry, had to say it.
  • As long as you've said it politely (and you have) there's no need to be sorry.

And at this point, Bond IS at least aware of the existence of SPECTRE, so you can just say "By the way, the founder and head of the nefarious organization you've been battling is your step-brother. Or foster brother. Or whatever. Just thought you might like to know," and the scenario can proceed as outlined.

I think you'd get the same look Bond (Craig) gives Blofeld when he started talking about that nonsense: Two years of living together doesn't make us brothers, you half-wit'.

Perhaps LALD feels a bit like a long chase, but it tries to stick close to the novel and in that the feeling of Bond beeing observed from every corner makes for thrilling reading. It might not work that well on the screen, but it's an integral part of the story.

  • 'Two years of living together doesn't make us brothers, you half-wit'.

"No, but it IS long enough to make me hate you forever & ever..."

It's pretty darn close to Dr. Doom's origin. Now all we need is a misplaced decimal point and a Reed Richards to try & mention it...

OK, folks - the older fans on here we call Originals, and everybody else also included - with this being Daniel Craig's last Bond I want to propose a topic for this thread.

What previous Bond film do you think Daniel's Bond could fit into? I mean really that his portrayal as Bond would suit. The film would need to be updated for these times a bit (of course), but mostly same story and general ambiance. Would Daniel's take on Bond serve any of the other Bond films in a good way? I do think so (says me, after giving this some thought).

I know other threads have swapped actors for fun (and perhaps this very thread earlier on), but I'd like you all to take a fresh look at Daniel's portrayal in regards to all the previous films.

Seriously, give it a try. If you want to also list the ones you feel he'd be out of place in, that's fine - but first let's go with which ones you think his Bond may fit. Don't try to do it with ALL the films; just which ones you can feel/visualize more clearly).

So maybe 3 categories, like this - here is my list:

Yes to Daniel Craig's Bond in
    :
From Russia With Love (One of my fave films & Daniel would kick ass in this one)
The Living Daylights (I can easily see him in this, though it is the much lighter of the two Dalton films)
License To Kill (would fit like a glove)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (excellent!)
Tomorrow Never Dies (he'd excel in several set pieces - Paris's death, confrontation with Kaufman + all the physical action of course, and partnered with Michele Yeoh)

    Not So Much:
Dr. No (just had an awful flash of Daniel and Ursula both walking out of the sea together - ha!)
Thunderball (I don't see him with swim fins easily)
Goldfinger (meh, Daniel golfing? But it's not a fave of mine anyway - sorry, SirHenry!)

    Definitely Not:
You Only Live Twice (Cannot picture him at all; plus, I don't even like Sean in this one much)
For Your Eyes Only: (Besides the Disco score, the ice cream cone promise +
whole doting, eyes batting Bibi in no way suits his Bond; even in a stretch)
Diamonds Are Forever (Daniel with wisecracking American gal in Vegas? Nope ...)
The Man With The Golden Gun (the idiocy level of "humor" in this and treatment/portrayal of women keeps this low in my rankings and I cannot picture him at all in this one)
Octopussy (the opening pre-title sequence yes. But the rest: no, no, too much Moore humor)
Goldeneye (a fine film that Pierce owns perfectly)

    Have at it! B-)

Hey @4Ever, good to have you back!

The first one I thought of is OHMSS. I think he's got the perfect balance for physicallity and acting talent to pull that one off.
I'll go for GE as well. He'd be more balanced than Pierce I think, and his seducing Natalya, showing a softer side, but then pulling up his curtain again for the mission would work wonders.

Not so much I don't really know. It's quite hard to imagine him taking over from Roger Moore as their styles are so different, but it doesn't mean it wouldn't work.

Definately not would be You Only Live Twice. With Connery the whole 'turning Japanese' was laugheable, but with Craig he'd be a goldfish in a siamese fighting fish pond.

@delfloria, you crack me up. ;) That is exactly what I first think of EVERY TIME I remember YOLT, unfortunately. The whole "going Japanese undercover" bit. Ugh...... no thanks. And I see you and I share a firm disdain for TMWTGG. The only thing that could save that film is an entirely new script. Which films do you think would fit Daniel?

I do think Daniel would be superb in the more serious, realistic scenes in Bond films. He's such a fine actor. Humor not his strong point, but a bit of dry wit or wry look in his eyes works adequately for much. Banter with women he can definitely do well. The sillier films I just cannot see him in. Roger indeed had the lock on that due to his very smooth charm that he pretty much patented.

@CommanderRoss, good to hear from you. I think Pierce is untouchable in Goldeneye, perhaps pretty much the way I feel Sean in untouchable in Dr. No (he shone in his debut, casino entry and throughout). I simply cannot put any other actor into those two roles - I suppose I now feel the same way about Casino Royale also, belonging so strongly to Daniel.

@chrisisall, I was on the fence about AVTAK. I think Daniel would probably improve it.

Well, don't be shy - I'd really like to see more members here chiming in with putting Daniel Craig's Bond into other films. Which would work? Are we in agreement Daniel would ease into the Dalton films without a hitch? Can anyone picture Daniel working with Jaws? I can't.

Looking forward to more chat on this. Cheers! B-)

And waving at it, as it disappears into the water? With Matt Munro singing ... sigh ... I think he would be so great in FRWL, actually. The whole gravitas of it suits him. And there is a great train sequence!

IK don't get why everyone get's so upset about the Japanese disguise. Yes, it's unconvincing, but it was supposed to work at a distance. To me it seems the only logical way for him to exist on the island if they know that they're being monitored.

Yep. That was never a problem for me either.

BUT........................ the Japanese disguise was compromised and worthless because Blofeld knew about it while Bond was still in training. Otherwise why would there have been TWO assassins sent to kill Bond.

The Japanese disguise is just awful. I can't make my mind accept it. Observers would have to be a very long way away indeed - in which case, no need to alter his face in the first place. If somebody has binoculars, the disguise is sunk.

I'll have to think thru your comment, @delfloria. I need to watch the movie again. It does have an incredibly lovely theme song. :)

AND my news is I just got back from our cinema - NTTD tickets go on sale Sept 29th (2 days, not 1 day before viewing). But unsure when mall opens. I think separate door, then elevators to 5th floor cinema. I'll have a Japanese friend call. First viewing Oct. 1st. I am taking the 29th off work. Ticket window open at 9 a.m. so I need to be there 8:00 a.m. It will sell out fast and people are buying tickets online, too, of course. I cannot - so I'll do my best on the 29th. Wish me luck!

I'm always amused by how the whole Japanese disguise completely comes off after Bond dives into the water outside the poisoned cave and emerges climbing the volcano looking like his old self.
