More likely to be a Cruise replacement audition?

Obviously, TC is not replaceable but you know what I mean. I think the fact that HC is doing some of his own stunts is highly symbolic.

As a Bond fan, I almost feel guilty , looking forward to this movie so much.
Why? You can like bond and MI .

I know but (and we have had similar conversations) MI seems or threatens to be out Bonding Bond. This does not seem to be right considering that Bond is the "grandaddy" of the action/spy genre and MI is the "new kid on the block".

Assuming Tom Cruise returns for a 7th M:I film, and there is another 3 year gap, similar to the one from Rogue Nation to Fallout, it will mark the 25th anniversary of the original film (1996-2021).

I always thought that I would be loyal to Bond no matter what, but the Mission Impossible films are leaving Bond coughing and wheezing in the dust.

This trailer embarrasses everything that James Bond stands for these days! Big Wow!!

Seems like in 2005 Bond handed over the Batton, and MI has been running with it ever since, all the way to the bank! :))

I'm trying to find fault in that trailer: it's hard.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. You're not alone. I've exorcised any guilt I may have had, a long time ago.

Nobody asked them to take the detour that they've taken over the past decade. That was a choice. One can't blame a competing franchise for filling the fan void. In fact, one must thank them.

    Quite.

They definitely saw an opening, and Tom Cruise was smart enough to know he could fill it with ease.

More like a red herring, like Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Jeremy Renner.

Bond swapped the action/spy genre for emo/spy for quite some time now.

I became a Bond fan because I realised that even the worst Bond films were way above average in terms of craftsmanship and entertainment. The last two Bond films don´t cut it for me, and I´m happy if a franchise as close gives me my fix.

The Roger Moore films understood what people thought of as Bond, which was why they returned to it with Brosnan after the Dalton era failed to catch fire. CR was a nice change of pace, but they should have realised they couldn't keep going forever in that direction, and now they are paying the price, after they painted themselves into a corner. Emo Bond cannot continue.

I watched a recent Video of Tom at some premiere somewhere (i will try to find it later) but he was asked about MI's Future and his very direct response was something like "i will keep doing them" and "i have not given a single thought about retiring (from the franchise)".
He said the thought hasn't even crossed his mind yet.

I watched LTK last night, and what struck me, for a film that isn't considered one of the best in terms of grandeur or spectacle, is how absolutely brilliant the stunt work was for its time. Truly ahead of the game, particularly the lorry finale. Even Pam looked like she was up there flying the plane. That is something audiences probably took for granted in the past when it came to James Bond.

Not any more. At least not from this fan.

@bondjames, LTK always stuck out for me positively because of its stuntwork. The tank chase might not be as pompous as say CR´s crane chase, but it´s one of the tightest and visceral action scenes of all Bond films before and after. And the whole combination of plot development and action provided by the scene where Bond water-skis never fails to uplift me.

I quite agree @boldfinger. That water skis sequence is in another league, and stands out even today. Truly awe inspiring. Everything seems coherent and beautifully realized. Even the PTS mid air capture of Sanchez is brilliant, and is rarely spoken of sadly.

Moreover, Dalton was very physical and believable in the role imho. He was up there on the truck and on top of the elevator too.

This is what Cruise does so well these days imho. He evokes the spirit of those classics (and other great films of the past) in his latest MI efforts. The man has the looks and natural style to look very good in a dinner jacket as well, which doesn't hurt. Again, this is an area where Bond should be tops.

Thanks @00Agent. He's still got a few more in him imho.

It's ironic to hear him talk about safety though, given what happened to him on set.

I fast forwarded once it got to the action sequences, given I'm trying to go in without spoilers.

And no matter what one thinks of his hairdo in the Mexico City casino, Dalton rocked his clothes like no other.
Yes, one can see that Cruise loves and knows a lot of old school adventure films. I recently heard him say that he watches at least one movie a day. Inspiring.

It´s impressive, I seem to remember that Cruise´s career wasn´t going many places at the time MI3 came out, and now M:I has the potential to put Bond in its shadow. I wouldn´t quite say it already did, but seeing how Bond struggles recently, while M:I gets bigger and better with each film makes one think...

I am happy to see so much positives about the trailer and MI as they actually improved on the Bond formula and still could make it personal in a far better way.

I do not expect that Boyle's 007 movie will come close but I do hope he takes a look at the recent MI movies and takes some tips on story and excitement from the MI movies because frankly I find Craig deserving a swansong on his way out.

Considering where we are with the franchise, TC is hardly going to say anything else. His answer is classic PR response. "I'm not ready to have that conversation" is a great reply. Utterly meaningless and leaves the way for "Now, Im ready to have that conversation"

He knows he can't go on forever.

And yet we have those who proudly proclaim that Craig's last means increased interest for B25, which I've never understood really. After all, that was pretty much the shtick last time around given wrist slash was doing the rounds during the promotion for the film.

So in a way I agree with you. It's best not to telegraph your impending retirement imho.

If HC gets good reviews and the audience resonates with the character, it will give them options moving forward. The rest of the team is very strong IMHO

I watched 2 seconds of the trailer and thought I am already locked in with the film so stopped watching, I want to be suprised by some things when I watch it at the cinema. Just from thumbnails on YouTube I could guess they were showing more than I wanted to watch at this point.

2 of the 4 Bond movies released since 2005 are MILES above any MI movie ever made, and I'm saying this as a huge fan of Tom Cruise and a huge fan of the last two Mission movies (I never really cared for the first three).

I don't understand this "loyalty" thing of which some of you speak. I loved Bond in the 70s as much as I did going to see a new Clint Eastwood movie. They were both on an equal footing to me. There's absolutely nothing to say one can't equally enjoy both Bond and Ethan Hunt at the same time. If anything, you should be rejoicing that there's another franchise out there that's giving Bond a run for his money—if not doing the stunts bigger and better, or at least being released in your local multiplex a damn sight quicker than Bond is right now. For me, Freefall is the must-see event movie of the year. If the bar has been raised by Tom Cruise then its up to the Bond producers to meet it with their next adventure. Competition is healthy.
