Tough... Young, Hunt, Glen (yes, Glen, you read that well), but I'm going with Campbell. What can I say? GE and CR are two exceptional Bond film in my book.

Excellent starting to get some diverse responses. I would vote for Luigi too. The character has some nice quirks but yes there is no emotional punch to his death and I put that on the actor. He's just "there" for lack of a better word.

i dont know if i would fault the actor completely - he can only work with what is written, and he can only give the performance the director wants...

in that regard, the character is the stereotypical sacrificial ally - but it happens so early and so fast, that we havent had time to see him and Bond form any chemistry.. and thus, the emotional impact that the scene is supposed to have, is completely wasted.. that is more or less the fault of the writers - all his character did was arrange a meeting and then get strangled while being told to wait in the car like a pet dog lol.

Well, my vote won't win for sure, but I will vote for Topol in FYEO. Whilst this is my least favourite Bond film of the ones nominated I do rate Topol as one of the brightest and best elements of FYEO. I think he is terrific in it and raises the film in a way non of the other actors nominated particularly do.

John Moreno in the same film though. How can a character who has such a large role be almost unnoticed. His death barely registers because when he isn't in a scene you totally forget he exists.
Terry isn't good, but curiously he is a better fit for Dalton than Hedison ever was.

    Another Columbo fan! :D

I'm more surprised GoldenEye won out against Casino Royale for Campbell's best directing effort than anything else, but I'll still give my vote to Campbell. I agree though with @mtm that I'm not very good at spotting the work of a director.

Yes I hate to admit this but my bias may be showing here. I like GE better then CR. To me CR drags from the game to the end of the movie but maybe that's not his fault!

Thanks for showing the thread this much love!

I'm a huge fan of GE, and I agree with you that CR drags a bit at the end, but it seems like a bit of a controversial opinion around here to prefer GE to CR. :P

It's a great idea for a thread! Happy to be a part of the academy. ;)

My vote for best director goes to Young, Terence Young for all 3 of his Bond films. His direction was a large part of the initial defining of what constitutes a 007 film.

Honorable mention to the unnominated Lewis Gilbert for his talents in staging beautifully photographed, big epic superproduction style Bond films.

Interesting he never turned up in the Brosnan movies, perhaps a hint that they took place in the same continuity as the Dalton films.

I think they did. GE was originally written with Dalton's Bond in the author's mind. I see the events of TLD and LTK as happening between the PTS of GE and the remainder of that film. Therefore, a retroactive subtext of Dalton's Bond being haunted by 006's "death" can be read into both of his adventures.

Plus in GE the new M is having Bond assessed, perhaps because she read he went rogue in Florida?

    Exactly.

Only just worked out what this thread is and it’s a great idea - bit of popcorn fun, nothing too serious, just what we need at the moment. Well done @thedove - just one slight request, would you consider maybe posting a new category every couple of days or so rather than every day - I’ve already missed the first two rounds! Of course it’s up to you how you organise it!

Anyway, shame Gilbert for TSWLM or MR (I can’t help myself) isn’t there, but the nomination from the bird cage goes to Campbell

I'm late to the party, I know, but I wanted to jump in and register that Aubergine in AVTAK is my least favourite Bond ally. (To the extent that he really is one.) The others are inept, yes, but Aubergine is the only one who I genuinely want off the screen whenever he's on it. Good lord he's awful.

Haha! "Let us, how you say, add this butterfly to our collection, no?"

What? What the hell do you mean, Aubergine?! You want to abduct the woman on stage? What?!

I love the suggestion @Max_The_Parrot feel free to refer to other categories! Yes I will slow down the pace. I think this has potential to be fun!

I have to think of some categories to cover some of the write in nominations. I am going to stick with just 5 nominees per category. A few more hours of directors and then we will jump somewhere else.
  • I would pick Mendes. Not that Skyfall is my favorite Bond movie, but I find his work was definitely exemplary. In my mind, that's was close between him and Hunt. Really close.

The academy has spoken! The Bondie goes to....Terance Young for From Russia with Love! He captured 8 votes!

Peter Hunt for On Her Majesty's Secret Service with 6 votes
Martin Campbell for Goldeneye with 5 votes
Sam Mendes for Skyfall with 4 votes
Poor Guy Hamilton for Goldfinger received zero votes!

Our next category is best adapted screenplay. This category is only from movies which were based on the Fleming novels. The nominees are:

Richard Maibaum and Johanna Harwood for From Russia with Love
Tom Mankiewicz and Richard Maibaum for Diamonds are Forever
Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis for Casino Royale
Simon Raven and Richard Maibaum for On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson for The Living Daylights
  • If it's a matter of judging the adaptation work, my vote would go in favor of the Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis trio.

As much as I love the stories of both From Russia with Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the adaptation work was much less of a challenge for the writers. So, point goes to Casino Royale, which was a much more intricate task, despite some flaws here and there.

Hmm.. from those I might have to go for Casino Royale. Expanding the book and adding real depth whilst still keeping everything that was good about the original, even to the extent of some that material being quite surprising for audiences used to Bond movies.

I know! I like that it's a tough choice. I think it causes you to really look at the work differently. I wasn't going to put DAF in this, but the dialogue is so good I thought it deserved a shout out as a nominee.
  • As far as I'm concerned, the Bondie goes to Richard Maibaum for......just about everything. His fingerprints are all over nearly every Bond script for the first twenty-some odd years of the franchise's history! I'm especially fond of Goldfinger, where he took one of Fleming's weaker novels and made it into the one, definitive, "Gold standard" Bond movie. (With a little help from Sean, Guy Hamilton, Desmond L. etc.) If pressed to choose one of the nominated films, I'll go with FRWL. Figuring out how to make Spectre the main baddie, rather than Russia her own self, couldn't have been easy!

I can see your point, but I don't know if I'd agree. I think the adaptations of GF and OHMSS make very substantial plot changes to the novels. They also visually flesh out scenes and add various grace notes that ultimately make the films superior to their sources. I can't say the same for CR. It's a very fine adaptation, but structurally it's broken backed and in several instances dis-improves on its source. So my vote goes to Simon Raven, and Richard Maibaum [and Peter Hunt, whose script work was uncredited] for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. But I could just as easily give the award to Maibaum and Paul Dehn for GF if they were nominated.

i love FRWL, its my favorite Bond film.. but my vote goes to Purvis, Wade, and Haggis for CASINO ROYALE

the way they modernized the original Fleming story, and added so much around it - and doing so without taking anything away from what made CR such a good story to begin with, was simply masterful..
