Would you consider a series of films set as a follow up to Fleming continuity (updated to today)?

I brought this idea up on another thread. Now I'm becoming obsessed with it.

Here's how I see it.

The films would not dip too deeply into the past, as your average movie goer doesn't know jack about the literary Bond. But they do know many names and the broader characteristics of them that transcend both media: Dr.No, Blofled, SPECTRE, Pussy Galore, Odd Job, Casino Royale, Moonraker, Felix, M, Moneypenny, Q Dept., Thunderball, Mrs. Bond's death, etc. These things can all be lightly referenced from the perspective of the novels without confusing or turning off General Audiences. Bond has lived through it all, it has formed him, but we don't really look back more than a bit superficially. Conveniently, the first entry could and should be COLONEL SUN, after that I'd go with fresh concepts. Obviously, moving the setting four decades or so into the future also limits what can be referenced or acknowledged as canon.

And he sports the facial scar from the first we see of him.

Any thoughts? Additional parameters? Don't both telling me how this will never happen, I realize that (sadly).

I think it would muddy the waters and confuse audiences. I also worry it would limit the possibilities in terms of more outlandish films. Personally, I enjoy the diverse lineup of films we have and I wouldn't want it to be pigeonholed by literary Bond.

    That's my take atleast.

It is more for personal satisfaction, rather than what the public would prefer, that’s for sure. I’d love to see it.

I think they should pick up with a new The Man with the Golden Gun to introduce the new actor: did Bond really survive NTTD? And is this really him?? NuBond tries to kill M and is thwarted and deprogrammed; when a plot to assassinate Her Majesty is uncovered, Bond has to go all "Day of the Jackal" to stop the killing and redeem his 00 status.
He not only gets knighted at the end, he also gets to fuck the queen. "James Bond will return in... COLONEL SUN."

I think it might be interesting to see the next era of Bond follow this idea, but still leaving it open to go back to traditional Bond films once that actor hangs up the tux.

That way the series wouldn't feel pigeonholed and could still pull a Moonraker at some point.

That’s almost my exact next post (so I won’t bother).
  • For many Fleming fans (PussyNoMore included) the movie franchise has long been on qualitative life support albeit quantitively it continues to line the pockets of those involved and CS won’t alter that one way or the other.
Surely the hope has to be that eon commissions ‘Period Bond’ with one of the long form operators and runs it in tandem with their periodic CGI blockbuster nonsense.
This way Fleming fans could get the ‘real deal’ and members of the lucky sperm club could have two revenue streams.
This is a sophisticated strategy that will doubtless require explaining to them in words of one syllable but where there is life there is hope.
