Those two characters were never presented as the new 007.

I still don't see the issue. Bond is the hero of the films, even when he calls himself Sterling or Somerset or whatever he's still the same guy. 007 isn't a superhero name: it's not like a new character taking over as Batman or anything. That even happens sometimes and people don't get upset.

I think that's where most not 'in-the-know' people got pissed about. Of course we knew Nomi wasn't JAMES BOND, she just had the designation 007. But others didn't and as I said before with the botched way that people are trying for inclusivity nowadays people got spooked and ran with the rumor.

I think that's more telling about the intelligence of these people than it is about films pushing for inclusivity: you can literally read comments under an article which explicitly says she's not playing Bond and they'll be complaining that they don't want a black, female Bond and they won't see the film :D These aren't geniuses.

Bad dialogue just makes the teeth grate and can ruin a movie. Good dialogue draws you in and we all have a favourite chunk of dialogue from the Bond legacy. Fingers crossed.

She writes good dialogue so I'm fairly hopeful about that.

Yeah, you're right, it's not like 007 is everything to the franchise.

    Glad you agree.

Yeah, you're right, it's not like 007 is everything to the franchise.

It's not like the movie is translated as 007: _____ or 007 vs ____ in many countries in the world.

It's not like the official logo (what the bat is for Batman) for James Bond is actually the 007 with a gunbarrel

It's not like Q, M, or many other characters in the movie refer to him as 007.

I mean..you know what, it doesn't matter what me or you think.

Let's see if they said something about this on their facebook page.

    What was it?

Oh yeah facebook dot com slash JamesBond007 ......fuck, ok, maybe they do have 007, but they also have James Bond!!!!

See, 007 is not THE BRAND for this entire franchise it's 007 + James Bond!

    So..umm...

Yeah, let's see if they did something on twitter about this.

    What's their twitter? @Jame...oh no, it isn't it's....... @007

hmmm....so their entire brand on twitter is 007?

...oh well, who cares, Twitter is overrated anyways.

Let's go to the official website and see if they have something to say.

    Their website being.... 007.com?

And they have a 007 shop on it? Not a "James Bond Shop" but "007 shop"

    Hmm...
It's almost as if 007 IS the brand for this massive franchise and casting a new 007 is just like Batman changing his name to FlyingDarkCreatureMan cause..."hey, it's all about Bruce Wayne, the name "Batman" is not important, it's just a code name"

If James Bond isn't "007" for one film, for the sake of shaking things up and keeping it fresh, I don't think it will be an issue. And it's funny that you mention Batman, because if you read the comics, MANY characters have taken over for Batman over the years. Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, Jean-Paul Valley, and Jim Gordon, to name a few. And guess what? The franchise is still Batman, and Bruce Wayne is Batman 99% of the time. Comic book fans are some of the biggest nitpickers on planet earth and I have never heard a backlash against these characters filling in for Batman that was 1/100th as loud as the outcry against Bond not being 007 for one bloody film.

I think being upset that a fictional character doesn't share the web address of the movie for one movie is a level of sensitivity I just can't share.

Great characters and storytelling comes from conflict. Having Bond run into an incredibly competent young agent who has taken over the 007 mantle after his retirement is the perfect conflict for our main character at this point of his life...

...and it becomes even more interesting when this character is also a Bond girl, making the capable agent-type of Bond girl we're used to getting more fresh and interesting, and incredibly fitting with the way Bond's role with women has developed over his era - which is exactly what the film is meant to be doing considering it's literally the end of an era.

I think it's also a great idea because the first time we saw him he was a cocky fresh agent who had just been given the 007 number: it's a great bookend to his time to do that again.

The concept of "old hand - young rookie" is well proven throughout cinematic history. It makes perfect sense re the context of DC's last apperance. It's down the the execution.

Is FlyingDarkCreatureMan the Robert Pattinson one? It sounds good.

All the 007 tumult -- so what !??! Bond gets assigned the number. Whenever an 00 dies -- they don't seem to retire -- their number gets used again. In the film TB there was a lady 00 agent. No one got their undies in a twist. In Fleming's own work Bond went from 007 to 7777 -- no one got their undies in a twist. What do you think ? They retire numbers ? The numbers, like weapons, cars, etc. get used again.

I know it was a joke in DAD, but I quite liked the idea of him being Double-O Zero for a little while. It just sounds cool :D

I wonder if NTTD will have a long unbroken shot? Cary used it perfectly in True Detective, it would be great to have another one like Spectre, hopefully an action scene

I wouldn't be surprised if the shot where Bond bumps into Nomi in the Jamaican club is a one-shot. Might not be very long but could be cool.

There’s plenty to rib Spectre about, but that opening shot is wonderful and one of the highlights of the whole series.

    Yeah, they did.

We'll have to see what Fukunaga's come up with. He did also have quite an action-filled long shot in Maniac:

I think we will definitely get an action-oriented long tracking shot in NTTD. My guess is the forest chase in Norway but it could be any of the action sequences.

Fukunaga puts a long tracking shot into all of his works. That's one of his trademarks. He almost gets that specified into his contracts as a prerequisite. He gets scripts written or rewritten around the potential to have one long tracking shot very early into preproduction.

The tracking shot from True Detective S1 was something he fought for personally, and it was a major factor into the rift with Nic Pizzolatto. Fukunaga kept on explaining that they needed to introduce some action into the story, even if it was unrelated to the main plot, to prevent the episodes from getting too static. And he probably lobbied for this subplot as it would be a good fit for the tracking shot. Pizzolatto didn't like at all that somebody would make changes to his script, but Fukunaga got the production on his side.
On the second season of True Detective, there's a scene that involves a director who's half-Asian, wears his hair in a bun and appears to be a jerk and an airhead. Some people assume it was a dig by Pizzolatto at Fukunaga.

Also, Fukunaga's tracking shots are really one continuous single take. No digital stitching of multiple takes, unlike Sam Mendes on Spectre and 1917 or Alfonso Cuaron on Children of Men and Gravity.

The continuous tracking shot in Beasts of No Nation is chilling.

I was disappointed in the SPECTRE long take because of the CGI stitching. The only ones that count are the ones that are one continuous take with no cuts. Yes, it would be awesome if NTTD had one.

I'm not sure there is such a thing. Hitchcock did this with Rope; the entire film looks like it is one take, but it isn't. He has "wipes" in that film, as does Inarritu on Birdman.

Mendes' work on SP led to the "continuous shot" approach on 1917. Again, there are "wipes" throughout that.

The only long takes that are done for real are typically done in a very confined setting like in GOODFELLAS.

Wouldn’t have been possible to attempt a tracking shot that shows Bond walking through the streets, then through a hotel, and then over the rooftops. I don’t care if there’s editing involved, I just like seeing the process of Bond moving about.

It is nice to see Bond fully immersed into and interacting with an environment.

My mind might be playing tricks on me, but I seem to remember one of the numerous articles mentioning that the forest sequence features a long take, and that it had the added effect of heightening the tension as Bond is being hunted during that scene. I could be wrong but I can see the words printed very clearly in my mind for some reason.

    Anyone else recall this?

That is a good point: there’s something about that car flip shot which suggests it might be done in that way to me.

It will be interesting to see where a long shot will be if we do indeed get one. Fukunaga is a very creative guy so it could be in any sequence or in any form. Although for some reason, I struggle to imagine one happening in Matera. I can't put my finger on why though.
