This is a challenge and I like challenges. This ranking is not done objectively.

Here is what I've come up with:

the Top 3: very difficult to bring in order, so I'll do it chronologically:

    1. FRWL - Connery
    2. TLD - Dalton
    3. LTK - Dalton
those three are clearly my favourite performances

    rest of Top 10:

    4. DN - Connery
    5. TMWTGG - Moore
    6. TWINE - Brosnan
    7. LALD - Moore
    8. GF - Connery
    9. FYEO - Moore
    10. OP - Moore

    the rest:
    11. TB - Connery
    12. QOS - Craig
    13. TSWLM - Moore
    14. MR - Moore
    15. TND - Brosnan
    16. GE - Brosnan
    17. CR - Craig
    18. DAD - Brosnan
    19. AVTAK - Moore

the bottom four, still good of course but quite flawed performances nonetheless.
    20. YOLT - Connery
    21. OHMSS - Lazenby
    22. SF - Craig
    23. DAF - Connery

I'm going to try to rank them by tenure only:

    Sean Connery:
    DN
    FRWL
    TB
    GF
    DAF
    YOLT

    George Lazenby:
    OHMSS

    Roger Moore*:
    OP
    FYEO
    AVTAK
    TSWLM
    MR
    TMWTGG
    LALD

    Timothy Dalton:
    LTK
    TLD

    Pierce Brosnan:
    TND
    GE
    TWINE
    DAD

    Daniel Craig:
    QOS
    SF
    CR

    * It's no secret that TMWTGG is my favorite Moore film, and #1 Bond film. However, I can't help but absolutely adore Moore in his Rogering mode from TSWLM onwards, especially his last 3 performances as a world-weary, mature, gentleman spy.

I must say Roger Moore is the hardest to rank, he seemed to have the role figured out from the very first scene on. Personally I like his two performances in TMWTGG and LALD best even though I do like his world-weary, mature, gentlemen spy take as well.

Also only doing a top 5 because after that it gets really, really tough. Connery obviously is the gold standard with Dalton and Craig right behind him IMO, but by the end of Connery's tenure he looks incredibly bored in YOLT and DAF was such a departure in terms of everything that came before it (although I much enjoy Bond films that don't take themselves too seriously - like DAF or TSWLM - to ones like TWINE or DAD).

I loved Moore's portrayals in LALD, TMWTGG, and FYEO, but when the scripts got more comical his performances worsened (with TMWTGG being the exception).

Lazenby was fine in OHMSS, just not spectacular (like the rest of the film).

Dalton was incredible in both of his turns in the role, same goes for Craig through 3 films at this point.

Brosnan was great in GE & TND, but the quality of the scripts hampered his performances in TWINE & DAD.

I'm bumping this up because we have so many new members who might want to take a shot at this. I do ask that you please go back two pages to the initial post to be clear as to what this thread is about. It is NOT a ranking of the films themselves or of your favorite Bond actors.

My new list, after just one viewing of SP and after my recent (and very gratifying) Bondathon/ Some have moved a fair amount but primarily it's an adjustment by 1 due to SP's insertion. All good performances so it's very difficult to separate some of these apart from the stinkers at the bottom.

DC's SP is not that highly ranked here because I personally think he is more natural and embodies the character more authentically when he's a little less flippant. It seems a bit forced & affected when he does glib.....doesn't roll so well with me. It may take a few watches, or maybe similar behaviour in B25, for me to accept this type of portrayal from him more readily:

    1. Sean Connery - FRWL
    2. Sean Connery - DN
    3. Sean Connery - TB
    4. Daniel Craig - CR
    5. Roger Moore - TMWTGG (+1)
    6. Timothy Dalton - LTK (+2)
    7. Daniel Craig - SF (+2)
    8. Roger Moore - LALD (+2)
    9. Roger Moore - TSWLM (+2)
    10. Timothy Dalton - TLD (-5)
    11. Sean Connery - GF (-4)
    12. Daniel Craig - QoS
    13. George Lazenby - OHMSS
    14. Roger Moore - FYEO (+1)
    15. Daniel Craig - SP
    16. Roger Moore - OP (-2)
    17. Pierce Brosnan - GE
    18. Sean Connery - DAF (+1)
    19. Pierce Brosnan - DAD (-3)
    20. Sean Connery - YOLT (-1)
    21. Pierce Brosnan - TND (-1)
    22. Roger Moore - MR (-1)
    23. Roger Moore - AVTAK (-1)
    24. Sean Connery - NSNA (-1)
    25. Pierce Brosnan - TWINE (-1)

Might post a full ranking eventually, but all I know for sure is my favorite is Craig in CR, and other favorites include Connery's first four, Lazenby's OHMSS, Dalton in LTK, Moore in FYEO and TSWLM, and Brosnan in GE and TWINE.

Craig finally was ALL there dear @Birdleson

In the PTS alone he is better than in QOS and SF combined :D

but I respect your opinion, absolutely.

I felt the same way like you after Skyfall, if not that negatively.

I thought Moore in Moonraker was worse than Moore in AVTAK. That being said, Connery, Dalton or Craig are probably the only ones who should be considered for top 3. Dalton, I think, had issues in each of his films, so it's pretty much between Connery (in his first three) and Craig.

    20. Pierce Brosnan - Die Another Day - those awful one-liners...
    21. Roger Moore - A View to a Kill - old man climbing Eiffel tower running after a stolen purse, yeah right...
    22. Roger Moore - The Man with the Golden Gun - did anyone believe him during that scene with Andrea Anders?
    23. Pierce Brosnan - The World Is Not Enough - knew all about my SHOULDER, knew just where to HURT me, what's the point of LIVING if you can't feel ALIIIIIIIIIIIVE?
    24. Sean Connery - Diamonds Are Forever - that is not what you call acting, that is what you call not trying...

@Birdleson Are we ranking purely by how much one enjoys their performance or how faithful we feel the interpretation is to Fleming's character?

You know what? I completely* agree with that list!!

Moore: You are spot on. His first two were his best performances with FYEO and TSWLM a close third and fourth.

Connery: His first four are so close together and obviously his performance in them is simply perfect.

Brosnan: Again spot on, Die Another Day being clearly his best performance, while his other 3 movies belong in the middle field and nowhere near the bottom.

Lazenby: As much as I love OHMSS and Lazenby in it, imagine OHMSS with a Connery performing like in FRWL or TB. Or, yes, with a Moore of TMWTGG.

Dalton: He is my favourite, but objectively I'd put him in the middle field as well if I only look at the performance.

Craig: CR clearly is a great movie with Craig doing very well what he's told to do by the director. But there was potential for it to be the greatest performance ever, not realised sadly. QOS is practically saved by Craig single-handedly. With each year passing I love this movie more.

and now for the only thing we differ:
    *
if you exchange your 6 SF with 25 SP we are 100% congruent. As you know I more or less hate Craig's performance in SF, it is worthy of The Bold And The Beautiful or Grey's Anatomy at best, so is Bardem's and more or less anyone else's except the French actress who was criminally wasted in that movie.
In SP we got the best Bond performance since Connery, imagining that Craig would have been like this (with a proper script) in SF...he might just be my No 1 overall now.

But hey! 23 out of 25 is a great consensus.

My intent was that it's about how well you feel that each performance embodies "Bond" and whatever that means to you (not necessarily acting ability, if that was the case Craig would take my top three spots). The Fleming factor is big to me, but not the overriding factor. That's up to you.

  • Here's the full list, now that Spectre's been released, although it's still highly subject to change.

    1. Sean Connery - Goldfinger
    2. Sean Connery - From Russia With Love
    3. Daniel Craig - Casino Royale
    4. Roger Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me
    5. Sean Connery - Dr. No
    6. Daniel Craig - Skyfall
    7. Roger Moore - For Your Eyes Only
    8. Timothy Dalton - Licence to Kill
    9. Pierce Brosnan - Die Another Day
    10. Sean Connery - Thunderball
    11. Pierce Brosnan - Tomorrow Never Dies
    12. Daniel Craig - Quantum of Solace
    13. Roger Moore - Octopussy
    14. Timothy Dalton - The Living Daylights
    15. Pierce Brosnan - GoldenEye
    16. Daniel Craig - Spectre
    17. Sean Connery - Diamonds are Forever
    18. Roger Moore - Moonraker
    19. Pierce Brosnan - The World Is Not Enough
    20. Roger Moore - Live and Let Die
    21. Roger Moore - The Man with the Golden Gun
    22. Sean Connery - You Only Live Twice
    23. Roger Moore - A View to a Kill
    24. George Lazenby - On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Each Bond's average score, and high/low:

    Sean Connery: 9.33 (1, 22)
    George Lazenby: 24 (24)
    Roger Moore: 15.14 (4, 23)
    Timothy Dalton: 11 (8, 14)
    Pierce Brosnan: 13.5 (9, 19)
    Daniel Craig: 9.25 (3, 16)

According to this list, my favorite Bond actors should be Craig, Connery, Dalton, Brosnan, Moore, Lazenby. But my actual list is Connery, Craig, Brosnan, Moore, Lazenby. Craig edged Connery because of the latter's relative disengagement in his last two Bonds (especially YOLT), but I imagine that if Craig does return for a fifth, Connery will edge back ahead. Dalton beat Brosnan by a fair bit, but Brosnan's longer tenure and weaker material, not to mention rescuing the series and being my first Bond, puts him ahead in the overall last.

I'm surprised that you ranked Moore's first two outings so low. To me, in those two he is closer to Fleming's Bond (not the films, but his portrayal) than any other actor in any other film.

I haven't actually read the books, but my evaluations aren't just on Fleming. Moore looks markedly less comfortable playing that character than he does playing the lighter Bond, and those portrayals fit much better in the movies as a whole. Dalton is also supposedly quite Flemingesque, but I have him lower because he's too damn dour and given to overacting. Craig is another overwhelming favorite of Fleming devotees, and I had him much higher in Casino Royale because he gives the most complete portrait of Bond as a character there and seems to know exactly what he wants to portray and how to do it. Connery in Goldfinger and From Russia With Love is the king of Bond performances, much as those movies are the greatest Bonds we will ever see.

I do accept Moore in those first two. He's somewhat reserved, as Fleming's Bond was. He's also an asshole to just about everyone. We never saw that cruel wit past THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (that part wasn't Fleming, but Moore made it a part of Bond).

@GoldenGun , we have the same bottom four with just MR and AVTAK being reversed.

I feel I might have been too severe about YOLT though, who was your #20?

Nothing beats Craig's dire SP performance anyway.

Interesting thread. I'm surprised how highly Dalton's performance in LTK is ranked. I thought it was bloody awful. Especially coming after his superb turn in TLD.

In a lot of LTK's scenes you can see his acting. it's not natural at all. Especially the scene where he finds Leiter and Della in the house. He overdoes it to the point where the scene has no power whatsoever. Even his 'farewell to arms' joke is badly overdone.

    Anyway on performance alone I'd go;

    Connery in Goldfinger
    Connery in FRWL
    Connery in Dr No
    Craig in CR
    Craig in QoS
    Craig in Skyfall
    Dalton in TLD
    Craig in Spectre
    Brosnan in GE
    Moore in FYEO
    Brosnan in TWINE
    Lazenby in OHMSS
    Moore in TSWLM

The rest are pretty interchangeable I'd say.

Although Connery looked like he was enjoying himself in DAF and NSNA and Moore had some good scenes in Octopussy.
