Controversial opinions about Bond films

    Hello everyone. I'm sure this topic has been done before but I'm brand new here so I thought I'd offer some controversial opinons to "shake things up" as M might say. Please feel free to harshly disagree with the following:

    1. I love AVTAK, including the "California Girls" moment. The rest of the PTS is very serious so I love this little moment of absurdity. Also, Max Zorin is probably my favorite Bond villain after Red Grant.

    2. Jaws is a bad character in BOTH MR (of course) AND TSWLM. He's terrifying in his introduction when he smiles at Stromberg, as well as during the murder of Fekkesh (which is one of the most disturbing death scenes in the entire series, mainly because it has a long, ominous build up) but after that he becomes a complete buffoon and every fight scene he is in with Bond is slow, boring, and poses no threat because we always know that BOTH of them will be okay. I know most people like Jaws in TSWLM but I think he's disappointing in both films.

    3. QOS is the worst Bond movie of all time. I didn't think any movie would remove TMWTGG from that spot but Marc Foster managed to do just that. Horrible editing, uninteresting story...the list goes on. I almost felt like crying in my seat in the theater in November of 2008.

    4. LTK is a great Bond film. Everything works here: the bare bones plot, the villainy, Dalton, incredible action sequences.

    5. The ski stunt in TSWLM is overrated. I'm not saying it isn't impressive but I don't think it is the best stunt in the series, as many people seem to believe. Mainly, it didn't require any great precision, like the car jump in TMWTGG. I think that even a somewhat forgotten stunt like the car in Paris driving across the back of the bus is technically much more impressive.

    6. Another Bond film in my top seven would be TND. I think it is easily Brosnan's best (although GE is very good, too). It is one of the most entertaining Bond movies and one I can watch again and again.

    7. While I don't consider NSNA an actual Bond film I find Rowan Atkinson hilarious and one of the few high points of the movie.

    Well, there you have it. Feel free to trample all over this. :)

    Agreed on Jaws. I had played the GoldenEye game on the N64 long before I saw TSWLM or MR. Based of the 'Aztec' level, I had built up in my mind that Jaws must be frightening and unstoppable-- like 'if he gets his hands on you, you're dead', type of thing. I was so excited to see him in the movie! I was SO disappointed...

    Also agreed on LTK.

    1. AVTAK is great, yes.

    2. I understand, you just made a typo about Jaws. I agree with you, he is great. ;)

    3. QOS is not in my top 10 but is surely better than CR in my opinion. And TMWTGG is my favorite movie.

    4. LTK is a good film and Dalton is good, but overall it´s one of my least favorite Bond films, sorry.

    5. I´ve never been crazy about that either. Moonraker´s PTS is more impressive.

    6. TND is good and has a place in my top 10.

    7. NSNA - looks cheap and is a joke compared to OP and AVTAK, but I agree that Rowan Atkinson is great in it. "Take full advantage of the natural cover".

    With QOS, I still feel that with better editing it could've been far superior to the film we were given.

    Almost forgot-- I'll add my own controversial opinions

    * If we couldn't have had George in DAF, we should have had Roger. Not really a fan of Sean in that one
    * At the end of DAD, Bond should have ended up with MoneyPenny for real, not some stupid VR gag. (or on the other hand, maybe Bond was using the VR goggles throughout the whole movie and NONE of it happened....)
    * If I could change one single thing about NSNA it would be the annoying music. I don't find the movie to be *that* bad, other than that.

    #1 Never been happy with the Beach Boys music, OK it was done by a tribute band but even so it was very out of place. Moore took absurdities to a new level at times in that years release but that's no reason to have 'California Girls' playing as Bond skis around Siberia looking for microchips and doing fancy stunts. Christopher Walken seems wasted in the film, such an actor of caliber, but the Zorin character was adequate enough

    #2 Richard Kiel should not have returned for Moonraker, him or his character

    #3 It has to be in the bottom five without question

    #4 License To Kill simply doesn't have the feel of a James Bond film sometimes when I watch it, there's no sense in lying about it, it's chalk and cheese from Daylights in that respect

    #5 Yes it is overrated, it's hardly the be all and end all of Bond's greatest moments

    #6 Tomorrow Never Dies is Brosnans second worst, one of the more boring and inept Bond adventures of recent times, nothing much happens all said, it is merely a 1990s Goldfinger in that sense

    #7 Character didn't do much for me, I'm afraid. I hardly noticed him on screen whenever he was there to be honest, in this unofficial Bond release

    I actually think Dalton´s acting is good in LTK, but I don´t like the character he portrays in the movie very much (compared to the character Moore portrays in for example MR).

    I can think of ONE line in Licence to Kill where Tim was a bit over the top:
    'WELL THEY MUST HAVE HIT THE FUEL LINE!!!!' I lol'd, I admit. But he rocks that movie. Way more that Brosnan would have if he were in it!

    I might have explained it wrong, but the Bond character in LTK isn´t a favorite of mine, but I still like it. Moore, but also Brosnan and Connery, all made portrayals I like much. I like Craig, Dalton and Lazenby, but not as much.

    He's still very much BOND in that movie-- but it just happened that his best (only?) friend Felix was mauled by a shark and his wife killed on their Wedding Day. There's a chance that struck a personal nerve with Bond.... ;)

    Moore would have been just as pissed if he were in LTK

    I've mentioned this all over the boards, but here it is: I hate Shirley Bassey. All the woman does to "sing" is scream, her three songs are attached to my three least favorite films (all for reasons unattached to her) and her three songs are just bad.

    I don't hate Bassey but I'm no fan of her music either

    I usually turn off audio for the Goldfinger credits, Diamonds could well be the 'best', and Moonraker is not so bad, or tolerable even, but still no fan of her work

    There was talk about Bassey and that Adele kid doing a double act for this years Bond release in terms of the music. I think I'd go offshore if they went ahead with that idea

    I'd love to have seen a Moore version of TLD (although I wouldn't want to give up the Dalton version).

    The car chase on the ice towards the end of DAD is really good.

    Moonraker is not naff, its beautiful, unique, eccentric and just a dream of an entertaining film (there, I said it).

    I've had a funny relationship with Kill. I used to think it was one of the very best movies but then I watched it alongside OHMSS and my view changed slightly. While I still enjoyed it it just felt more generic a thriller to me. You had the cheesey 80s characters, the sleazy 80s bar, some slightly out-of-place dialogue ("I don't like it, you can finger me", "I love James so much"( combined with the rather unexotic look and feel to the film. GE may be a bit lighter and more "90s" but at least the scale and sets looked bigger.

    Kill just doesn't have that much...style.

    Don't get me wrong I still enjoy it but I can see why it's controversial amongst fans (and I've seen Yujimbo).


    ANOTHER CONTROVERSIAL OPINION:

    The "Ladies First" track in GE is fine and suits the nature of the playful scene.

    In the last twenty years, the series only counted with two good films: GoldenEye and Casino Royale. Tomorrow Never Dies is a bland action movie. The World is Not Enough is mediocre. Die Another Day and Quantum of Solace, new low tops for the franchise.

    For a Fleming's addicted, Timothy Dalton is the best Bond. Followed by Sean Connery and Daniel Craig.

    I've watched Octupussy more times than any of the other Bond films and find it irresistible. Give me Octupussy and any other Bond film, I may like the other one more and think it a better film but 8 out of 10 times I'll pick Octopussy and happily watch it!

    My views;

    1. Casino Royale is the worst Bond film of all time. Even outside of Bond films, I still hate it. I think it's a terrible film altogether.

    2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is overrated by Bond fans. It's a good Bond film, but it had a few issues with it.

    3. Diamonds Are Forever is one of the best Bond films. It's my personal favorite actually.

    4. The last great Bond film was License to Kill. Every film after that just degraded in quality, although I did enjoy Tomorrow Never Dies for what it was.

    5. Pierce Brosnan was a good choice to replace Dalton.

    6. Roger Moore's 1970's Bond films were better than his 1980's Bond films.

    7. Charles Grey's Blofeld is my favorite Bond villain.

    Coming from a Daniel Craig stalker fan, that doesn't mean shit, frankly. Both of Dalton's performances were excellent.

    QOS is the worst bond movie, but for me it used to be DAD, not TMWTGG. I think TMWTGG is good, its fun, it doesn't take itself too seriously and its a decent enough film.

    LTK is a great bond film. The best ever. My favourite film of all time.

    Jaws is a bad character in MR, but I think he was awesome in TSWLM. Watching it when I was a kid, I was always sure that jaws would win. I knew deep down bond would have to win because they made more films but some of the fight scenes were so tense. Its the same with oddjob.

    I like NSNA. Atkinson is hilarious. I think of NSNA sort of like the 4th indy film, it didn't need to be made, it probably shouldn't have been made, but it could've been alot worse for a TB remake.

    I like AVTAK, but I think roger was pushing it. It's a good film but would've been better with a younger bond. That song ruins the PTS though, I'm gonna disagree with you on that.

    I´d like to add that CR is by far my least favorite EON Bond movie. The only Bond movies I like less are the older versions of CR.

    Roger Moore is a better Bond than Connery.
    Pierce Brosnan is a better Bond than Connery.

    My top 5 consists of TMWTGG, YOLT, MR, OP and AVTAK.

    Moore was not too old in either OP or AVTAK.

    FRWL is terribly overrated, just as OHMSS and GF. It´s my least favorite Connery Bond film. YOLT is my favorite.

    FYEO is my least favorite Moore Bond movie.

    Goldeneye is my least favorite Brosnan movie (or possibly TWINE). My favorite out of his movies is DAD.

    I like Denise Richard, Tanya Roberts and Mary Goodnight as Bond girls, while Vesper I don´t.

    Here are a couple of controversial opinions about Bond.

    What does one thing have to do with the other? I'm both a Dalton AND a Craig fan yet I find Dalton's acting annoying in a lot of LTK scenes!

    -I love QoS
    -I hate YOLT, DAF, DAD, and the Moore era with a passion
    -Laz is/always has been an egocentric, self-centered, and misogynistic prick
    -Dan is the #2 best Bond, only beaten by King Sean
    -The entire Brosnan era is full of missed opportunity
    -Having Dench's M being closer to the action and Bond himself is a positive
    -Bond should always be cold, ruthless, and calculating instead of a walking comedy show or pretty boy
    -All Bond actors should follow the Sean Connery Bond blueprint, and add a nice touch themselves
    -Mathis should never have been killed off in QoS, the worst mistake of the film sans the editing and villains.
