The Guess the Criteria Game

I had the idea for a new gane. I don't know if everyone is interested in this but I just thought it could be funny. It works like this:
Someone - the winner of the last game - presents a ranking of all Bond films (or a selection of Bond films) which is made according to an objective criteria, e.g. the length of the film.

The other participants may then guess the criteria by which the films are ranked. I don't know if this has been done before.

Here is a first list of the Bond films. May anyone guess the criteria by which the films are ranked?

01. Diamonds are Forever
02. Thunderball
03. Casino Royale
04. The World is not Enough
05. Skyfall
06. For Your Eyes Only
07. License to Kill
08. Octopussy
09. Moonraker
10. Goldeneye
11. Spectre
12. Goldfinger
13. Quantum of Solace
14. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
15. Tomorrow Never Dies
16. The Spy Who Loved Me
17. Die Another Day
18. You Only Live Twice
19. A View to a Kill
20. The Living Daylights
21. Live and Let Die
22. Dr. No
23. The Man With the Golden Gun
24. From Russia With Love

Interesting game. Im stumped. I'm assuming these are objective, measurable criteria

Percentage of screentime given to Bond?
  • Budget adjusted for inflation?
  • Is the criteria objective or subjective?
  • OP says it's objective. If it were subjective, that could very easily be somebody's personal ranking of all the films given how wildly tastes vary on here. ;)

it is objective. Unfortunately no one has guessed it yet.

I may give you a hint: FRWL is very far behind all the rest.

A good idea but that would take way to much time for me to measure it.

    Budget adjusted for inflation?

Then LTK would certainly be at the bottom...
  • A couple of these don't seem to fit, but I'll guess: amount of time from the beginning of the film until we clearly see Bond's face, in ascending order?

It is not correct but you are on the right track.

Amount of time until Bond speaks?

That is it. Congratulation! The time until Bond speaks starting from the beginning of the gun barrel which does not exist in the first three Craig films why these are probably a little bit higher on the list. The last four films do not have Bond speak before the title sequence. In FRWL it takes more than 17 minutes before Bond speaks the first time whereas it only takes 32 seconds in DAF. I can give you the precise numbers in the evening...

    So @Some_Kind_Of_Hero
if you want you may give us a new objective ranking.

Wow, awesome! Okay, give me a day or two to think something up. If anyone has something ready to go, you have my blessing to jump on in.

Why don't I toss in a simple one to keep things going while SKoH thinks his up? The next round will still be his regardless of who gets this one. Based on the info I have I can only go up to QoS, but this would be applicable to SF and SP as well, I just don't have the stats. Ranked in ascending order.

22: The Man with the Golden Gun
    21: Dr. No

    Number of kills by Bond.

My thinking too. A big hint is how Brosnan is classed as the most lethal Bond, statistically, hence his films being high rankers on the list.

Yeah, that was it. Simple, like I said.

I would think Bond blowing up all of those guys in the OP PTS, or the two nuclear subs in TSWLM would top the list.
Well, the film is tied for second, after all.
  • Alright, folks, if @IncompetentHenchman doesn't mind, I've got one ready for ya. Somebody might pick up on this pretty quickly, but we'll see.

I'm tempted to say budget but that's not it...

I guess it has something to do with the budget. Maybe the money they paid to the main villain?
  • I certainly don't mind.

    Time spent with Mi6 crew?
  • Nope, not anything to do with budget or time spent with Mi6 crew.

It is almost a chronological ranking... hmm,.. amount of stunt men?

The amount of locations Bond goes globe-trotting to?

    Length of ending credits?

And we have a winner! I figured the ranking would turn out more or less chronological, but was interested to see where things would deviate and where the major changes in length would be. Over to you for the next round, @Birdleson.

Here are the timings for the end credits, by the way. I clocked them according to when the first credit is seen and when the last credit (usually the final appearance of the film and company names) fades out, as opposed to, say, how long the music runs for. I did not include gunbarrels if those appeared at the end of the film, however I did start from "James Bond Will Return" if that was the first thing to show up, as with TWINE and Skyfall, and Cubby's "In Memory" credit for Tomorrow Never Dies.

    1. SP: 6:45
    2. SF: 5:08
    3. QoS: 4:08
    4. DAD: 3:59 (TIE)
    4. CR: 3:59 (TIE)
    6. TWINE: 3:51
    7. TND: 3:44
    8. GE: 3:14
    9. OP: 2:39
    10. LTK: 2:31
    11. TLD: 2:26
    12. AVTAK: 2:25
    13. FYEO: 2:20
    14. MR: 2:12
    15. YOLT: 1:35
    16. TSWLM: 1:33
    17. DAF: 1:10 (TIE)
    17. L&LD: 1:10 (TIE)
    19. TMWTGG: 0:57
    20. GF: 0:53
    21. OHMSS: 0:51
    22. FRWL: 0:40
    23. TB: 0:34
    24. DN: 0:27
  • Yes, that seems to be the trend in general—longer and longer credits with each passing year. Some films' end credits are in excess of ten minutes even!
