"Who is your floor?" - Diamonds are Forever Appreciation

I searched and couldn't find a similar thread.

First off, I'm watching this film as I type. I love this movie so much that it is Number 2 on my favorite Bond films list.

I don't know what it is about this movie. It's fun.

Sean Connery is as cool as ever. I do not see how people can say he looks fat and old. He looks fine, well, except when he's shirtless and looks, well, fat and old. But when he's not in a bathtub reading a magazine he looks perfectly fine.
His lines in this film are some of the best as well.
"Pee-ta? You are English? I speak English-- Who is your floor?" cracks me up every time.

Wint and Kidd are some of the most terrifying henchmen in the series-- because they don't look terrifying at all. Who would think THOSE guys would be cold blooded killers?

Charles Grey is also excellent as Blofeld.

Sure the plot is a bit out there, but its a 70's Bond film! What do you expect?

Oh, and who can forget "BAW- HAW?"

There are so many more reasons I love this film, but I'd like to see some of your guys' reasons.

Curiously I watched it today although it's my second least favorite in my ranking. However, I'think is OK if it's not taken as a sequel to OHMSS.
I like it's music, the mysterious atmosphere and some fun stuff. But I hate the Circus Circus sequence, Tiffany been stupid at the end, Blofeld by Charles Grey, and the final attack in the oil rig. In sum, I'm not really a DAF fan.

I have always enjoyed it, but parts do drag for me. But I like most of it quite a bit.

3rd best outing, behind MR (2nd) and TMWTGG (1st). Absolutly stellar fun everytime I watch it. Connery is in top form. Hilarious gags, lots of benign bizare... And of course the most colourful and memorable bunch of secondary characters. Just all-out mindless entertainement !! 10/10.

The film definitely drags, particularly the scene with Blofeld in drag! DAF has its moments but IMO one of the weakest entries (2nd only to AVTAK). Connery is good but a little overweight! The fight with Peter Franks is convincing and brutal. Wint and Kidd are fun but a little too camp! The less said about Jill St John the better! Would have better with Jane Fonda in the role. Charles Grey is a fine actor but miscast as Blofeld with no real menace. Belting theme song though by Dame Shirley. Also Bond films generally look better in locations outside the US of A. No coincidence that this and AVTAK are partly filmed in the States. Having said that I realise that the underrated Licence Revoked, sorry America, I mean Licence to Kill, was partly shot in Key West. Been there myself, nice place.

This thread has put me in the mood so I'm firing up DAF this afternoon. probably my least favourite Bond film but it's not without its charms (yes, I'm talking about Plenty).

I prefered Gray as Henderson in You Only Live Twice even if we only saw him for a short time, his Blofeld character was one of the most banal they gave us, a big step down from Savalas two years earlier, I can't recall any standout scenes

Jill St John one of the best Bond girls, best looking in any event, for me, never warmed to the Lana Wood character, I turn off audio whenever she's on screen

The Kidd and Wint double act were always fun to watch, some fun one liners, and the end on the cruise ship had some genuine laugh out loud moments

Maybe Bassey's best of the three she did, bit of a uninteresting pre titles sequence that always seems to pass too quickly, one of the most forgettable Bond teasers of the entire franchise I would go as far to say

Lots of interesting locations as Connery leaps about from The Netherlands, Las Vegas to California but he's clearly out of place here as 007 and was only coaxed back in the first place after he was paid an astronomical amount (at the time) to play Bond for a sixth time after initially deciding to quit during YOLT

All said it's fine enough if you've absolutley nothing to do for two hours, but failing that, this 007 adventure is best avoided and you'd be better off with one of Connery's earlier efforts or something else that Bond gave us from the 1970s

@DC I totally respect your opinion. So out of curiosity, I want to ask you what do you think of the final attack on the oil rigg? And also what's your appreciation regarding Grey's Blofeld? (Those two being my to biggest objections to the film.)

@0013, well the oil rigg attack is campy, I admit, but I love camp in Bond films... especially the 1970's camp. And as for Grey's Blofeld, I love him. Just utter camp and hilarious, made the role his own, totally different from Savalas and Pleasance. Very memorable villain.

I wasn't aware that Gray had appeared once or twice in the now defunct French detective series Bergerac

And Connery was neither old or fat in Diamonds, well maybe somewhere down the line, bottom line is, Sean, and if you take the salary out of it, wasn't really needed again for a sixth time, he looked bored most of the time if memory serves

The movie is completely camp, even a litlle OTT camp. The story IMO has some distracting twists. Wint and Kydd sure are the most creeby henchmen couple in the franchise. One bad thing is, that the German dubbing editors decided to up the campiness of the two by having their German Voice Actors (both very good voice actors) speak really clichéed gay, also their one-liners in German are not that witty and more obviously silly (I love their lines, when they try to crmeate Bond. "Very moving. - Heartwarming - A glowing tribute!"). And when in the German versionTiffany finds Bond's ID on the dead Peter Franks and tells him that he had killed Bond, he quips. "Oh really. So one does really live twice!" BTW, what is the English quote when Tiffany tells Bond, that she got her name because she was born, when her parents bought the weddings rings at Tiffany's? In German it's :Oh, so you have to be glad, that tehy did not buy them at Woolworth's"... Not one of my favourites, sometimes a litttle too camp for my taste, but very entertaining with soem gerat cheesy dialogue.

St John - There is No Mister Case, The T is for Tiffany

Connery - Tiffany Case, it's definitely distinctive

St John - I was born there, Tiffany's (Jewelry store), on the 3rd floor whilst my mother was buying a wedding ring

Connery - Lucky for you it wasn't Van Cleef and Arples

(did not buy them at Woolworths) lol

I've always had a soft spot for DAF, even if some moments are cringe-worthy or laughable. That aside, there is a charm about it, and several scenes stand out as classic Bond. Such include the elevator fight, the Vegas car chase, the fight with Bambi and Thumper, and the oil rig battle. The characters are also very colorful and memorable, specifically Wint and Kidd. The music is also a great advantage, with awesome pieces played during the elevator fight and the Bambi and Thumper fight.

DAF IMO looks like the Bond film where Connery was having the time of his life. When it comes to camp and silliness, Connery amazingly had Moore beat. It's so strange how Connery could do a film like Dr. No and FRWL and switch up and give us a performance such as what he gave us in DAF. DAF is mindless entertainment and gets away with it because it makes no apologies for what it is.

Probably about mid-table for me. One film too many for Connery I think. Though would be good if Bond did return to Las Vegas - a chase down the strip and into some of the new casinos would be good to see on the big screen!

@DC thank you! Well, I enjoy better the more serious Bond films... and while I previous hated DAF, I'm begining to like it.

Very campy. My least favorable Connery entry.

But it does have great sets from Ken Adam, a wonderful score by Barry, some excellent crossediting, hilarously good henchmen and a huge amount of fantastic one-liners.

Never saw it in that way - but you're right. SC playing it with firmly tongue in cheek...his comic timing is excellent - even the cliched 'tell him he's fired' gag is so well done...

Moneypenny's reaction at the port was probably genuine - they were so happy to have him back.

The whole Bond alias Peter Franks meets blond/brunette/redhead Tiffany Case is the best Bond meets Bond girl scene in the entire series thanks largely to Tom Mankiewicz's writing and Connery and Jill St. John's acting.

Mankiewicz's script easily provides some of the wittiest dialogue in the series while Miss St. John is one of the most underrated and most memorable Bond heroines ever. I also like Jimmy Dean, the sausage king's turn as the Howard Hughes-ish billionaire Willard Whyte. "Baja?! I haven't got anything at Baja!"

Not great but it does have it's merits. The scene where JB talks to the rat is superb.

The final scene smacks of a movie that had run out of money & the end of the Connery era deserved better.
