No more personal stories

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I think it's time that the film go for the more familiar mission-is-the-priority plot of the early movies. More or less every film since LTK has had some kind of "personal" angle to it and it's goo ten quite tired, honestly. The ending of SF seems to indicate that it'll be business as usual, so we can only hope.

  • I don't see how TND had a personal angle to it. Other than that, I agree.

Elliot Carvers Wife Paris had a personal connection to Brosnans Bond as being an ex lover who got too close for comfort

TND had the Paris Carver back story.

    Beat me to it
  • Eh, yeah. But Paris didn't mean anything for us. The other movies on the other hand, we actually got to know more about why Bond was emotionally connected. Paris appeared and died in the matter of 10-15 minutes. It would be different if she was a returning character. GE, TWINE, DAD, CR, QoS and Sky all managed to make the audience understand why Bond is attached to the stuff he is, and they build on that throughout the movie. Paris is just... not.

I was bummed out when Paris was killed :(
  • If they actually brought back a former character instead of inventing a new one, that would be different. Maybe Sylvia Trench.

Now that P&W are gone we can hope to get some fresh ideas from Logan (and perhaps even input from Mendes and Craig)
  • I want a return of the megalomaniac villain trying to take over the world, with the finale taking place in some huge secret lair. Is that too much to ask for?!

No. I would like that minus "taking over the world". That has become old hat since Austin Powers. Besides, only two films in the series had that plot line. And Silva did have a secret lair and the film did end in a lair of sorts.
  • But Silva's lair was soooo underused. The final confrontation was in a lair of sorts, but it was more Bond's lair than anyone else's. If the movie ended on Silva's island in a big battle, I would have been content. I'm probably one of few people who thought the final act of Skyfall was the weakest.

Really? Shootout at enquiry, drive up to Skyfall in the DB5, shootout at Skyfall, Kincaide(!), last scene(!)
  • I mean, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I had expected. The visuals were of course astonishing all the way through, but the confrontation with Silva was just... weak.

I liked it. Kind of a throwback to Kristatos' death. And Craig finally got a main baddie kill!
  • Yeah, true. I liked the throwback. But I still expected some sort of brawl between Bond and Silva. I mean, he was a trained agent. He could fight. He never really showed that off.

I suppose. Lots of people expected Bardem to be like Chigurh and have some kind of beat down with Craig and were disappointed I guess. I still think he's the best villain of the Craig era, despite his admittedly limited screen time. And the filmmakers were probably more interested in showing Silva as intelligent and good with computers rather than fighting. Maybe they ran out of time?
  • Could be, yeah. But anyway, maybe it sounds like I'm being overly critical. The only negatives I have to say about Skyfall was the final act, other than that it was a brilliant movie. It's actually my third favorite Bond movie.

And yeah, Silva is Craig's best villain, I'd even go so far as to say one of the best in the series.

No, not all. Glad we agree!

But yes, mission-based stories with the gun barrel at the start from here on in...
  • Most certainly. I used to think that I wasn't bothered about having the gun barrel at the end, but after rewatching most of the movies... It's kinda jarring. It needs to return to the front. But I want it altered as well, Craig walks way to fast in his barrel.

Ugh, I don't know why they can't just film one, definitive, good version of the walk and have one single design rather than do a new one for every film #-o

That's how quite a few of us feel, including myself. They introduced Quantum and carried it throughout two movies, so I really hope we see the head of Quantum in Bond 24 and see him/her taken down and Quantum destroyed in the 25th.
  • I see it like this; Skyfall was Craig's version of Goldfinger. We had two movies building up Quantum, and then an adventure in between that has nothing to do with the evil organization. Then we'll have two more movies regarding Quantum, with the second being the destruction of them. Sounds plausible to me.

Hmmm, and the 3rd one was also the magic Bond number for Moore and "The Spy Who Loved Me." Well, I guess that magic number cannot be applied to the rest.

With Diamonds are forever it also feels a bit personal. Bond 24 wil be Thunderball, Bond 25 Yolt/OHMSS and Bond 27 DAF. QOS earlier be altready FRWL and CR Dr No. Skyfall i agree Goldfinger but mabey also a bit Dr No/FRWL. I think there is change that someone we have seen in Skyfall mabey be a Quantum member.

The new Bond has lost his love (CR), a good friend (QoS), and his boss (S); time now for lots of gratuitous sex and violence, a great car chase, a great casino scene, ski chase, mountain climbing, underwater scenes, an outrageous, larger than life villain with an equally outrageous sidekick, and a plot that threatens the entire world. Okay, so we've seen all of this before; but the best elements from past films can be freshened up--but no more motorcycles--perhaps because of QoS, the sequence in Skyfall felt old.

I think it's hilarious how a thread from 4 years ago is still relevant today. Whether Craig stays (I really hope he does) Mendes and the personal angst needs to go.

My issue with Paris Carver: she simply does not deliver. They build up this woman who got Bond almost in love... And that's it. We don't know why she was different, what brought her to Carver, she just looked good, then she died and Bond just carried on. It was as if they invented this backstory they never developed so they could dispense away with a seduction scene.

If Craig stays, and I too hope he does, I guess Blofeld will return. I'd understand if they make at least one reference to the brother story, but other than that... please guys, no more personal business in a long time.
