When it comes to his finest performances his role in Magnolia as a rather damaged motivational speaker is the one that gets cited, ironically this is probably the closest to the real Cruise, rather than the ever smiling permanently positive character the public see's.
What others have you seen? Rain Man?

I've seen plenty of his films, I would say Collateral was one of his better roles, I'm not saying he's a terrible actor far from it but does have a tendency to play himself, his best work his behind him and that role in Tropic Thunder was utter rubbish, look it's Tom Cruise in a fat suit being obnoxious and swearing a lot, so what, I can't believe how people thought this was some kind of huge highlight and Cruise being diverse and showing his sense of humour.
He's a great star but rarely does he stretch himself, he did have the more difficult role in Rain Man and was the stand out of that film and Born on the 4th July was impressive but now he just signs up to blockbusters. Have you seen his upcoming slate, Jack Reacher? That sounds like a real stretch for Tom.

Let me get this straight. In a film about a man and his autistic brother, you think the mild mannered Charlie was more difficult to play than the autistic Raymond? What is wrong with you, mate?

Don't generalize. There are great exceptions.
DarthDimi said:Firstly, I took the liberty of changing the title. 'Tommy Girl' is unnecessarily offensive and could provoke pointless bickering among our members. Secondly, there are lots of famous folk who get married and then divorced at the same rate most of us change underwear. Cruise got nothing on Liz Taylor yet. Thirdly, I like Tom Cruise the actor, I don't need to agree with Tom Cruise the man / husband / father. Whatever religion he practises, as long as he keeps doing well on screen, I don't mind his private affairs. By the way, I don't think any of us has the right to judge him for what he does in private any more than he has the right to judge us in our private doings.

I almost knew this would happen sooner or later, and can't say that I blame Katie - if they were my kids, I wouldn't want them getting wrapped up in convoluted elitist cults either.... how other people can't see through that ultra thin veil is beyond me - but hey, if giving away thousands of dollars gets you closer to realization, then have fun..

You don't know that that was the reason. It is about as believable a religion as any other, so I don't understand the mockery of it.

Scientology is a dangerous cult, that is my belief due to the disturbing information I've read about it.... it's not a matter of what they choose to believe, it's the tactics in which they use to milk people out of all the money they can.... and any religion that forces you to PAY regularly - is not a religion... last time i checked, I don't owe a fee for believing in Jesus Christ.

but i dont want to turn this into a religious debate... i've said my peace, stated my facts behind why i believe what i believe about said "religion"... agree or disagree, doesn't really matter.... lets just move on..

Is this really your opinion of Cruise's acting abilities, or is this any homophobia or religious bigotry speaking?

It may sound taboo, but I love Spielberg's remake of War Of The Worlds, and I love Cruise's performance in it.... and then there is Top Gun - classic - but that goes without saying lol.

Val Kilmer made Top Gun for me, not Tom. But I know it was a mega hit and it was a fun movie. I enjoyed Risky Business, ages ago, too.
