The trials of cohabiting with a non Bond fan

saunderssaunders Living in a world of avarice and deceit
edited April 2011 in General Discussion Posts: 987
I love being a James Bond fanatic, I constantly watch the films, I read only Bond related books, I listen to the soundtracks rather than the radio and I try to spend as much of my disposable income on the Bond merchandise, but there is just one small blot on my otherwise perfect existence and that's having to share my world with a partner who dosen't appreciate the necessity of immersing oneself totally in the world of Bond.
Don't get me wrong I love my wife dearly and in every other area she is a lovely and perfectly reasonable woman, but try as I might I can't seem to make her understand that James Bond is far more important than shoes, handbags, soaps, the kids and stuff like that! It's not that I haven't tried to educate her, I've spent many the hour while watching the films with her giving her a running commentary on various facts and trivia and generally just being 'really interesting', but for some reason she refuses to immerse herself in the subject. It's not that she hasn't got a sufficient grasp of the subject, thanks to my efforts she is now very knowledgeable about James Bond, but she seems content just wasting her life on real friends, family and a variety of interests and hobbies that bear no relation to 007.
Has anyone else been unfortunate enough to be struck by this strange bewildering phenomena of living with a partner who dosen't like the world of 007, and if so any suggestions on what I can do? :)

Oh my, saunders I do see where you are coming from. Women are a strange breed, they think shelves are for ornaments and flowers, rather than Bond magazines and small replicas of Bond cars. Insane!

It does sound however that you may have one of the more tolerant ones. I say that because my wife will occassionally watch a Bond film with me, as long as Rog isn't in it. She lets me keep my Bond books in the book case and is faintly amused (and not at all aggresive) about my Bond coasters and Bond tea mug.
She draws the line however when I climb in to bed at night, lean over and suggest some hanky panky in my best Roger Moore accent. I know it puts her off completely, but I can't help myself. I sort of get Roger Moore tourets.

I don't collect as much as you though, so it doesn't impose nearly as much on our lives.

My conclusion? I'm afraid she'll have to go saunders ;-)

It's an affliction I tend to suffer from too, perhaps unsurprisingly - sadly, I expect it's for life...

I was going through this as well saunders, Misses Luds was clueless as to why I spent so much time on forums, bought all the movies, had toys, etc. Her first Bond experience with me was when DAD released, she accompanied me and my best mate P-O. What a disaster! Couldn't have picked a worse movie. She was turned off (naturally!) by it and assumed all Bond movies were just as Bad. Fortunately, in 2006 I attended Vue Sur Bond in Quebec City and convinced her to attend, as Quebec is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. We saw Guy Hamilton, Sir Roger Moore, Richard Kiel, I attended a Bond music show starring Dame Shirley Bassey, and saw DN, FRWL, GF, TB, LALD, and TMWTGG on the big screen.

And that did the trick. She thoroughly enjoyed the Connery flicks, finding that unlike Brosnan, Connery and even Moore had a lot of charisma. Luckily, Brosnan was canned and Misses Luds was very excited to see CR, participated in a pre-CR Bond marathon and the rest is history!

Fortunately, Mrs. CraterGuns doesn't mind my being in Bondage. She's certainly no 007 fan but she has enjoyed (most of) the movies, whether on home video or at the cineplex.

Her favorite Bond pic is CASINO ROYALE (2006)... Walking out of the theater she actually exclaimed, "Hey! That was really, really good!"

My wife humors me with my liking of the whole 007verse. However she dislikes Daniel Craig as 007, not the actor, and won't come with me to the cinema untill we get a new 007. She missed out on the whole QoS debacle. The lucky lady.

@Saunders, I know what you mean!!

I am a Tomb Raider Lara Croft fan since the game first game out in 1996 on the Sega Saturn, before it was ported to the Sony Playstation and the PC MsDOS.

I have a copy of every game ever made and some of them I even own duplicated copies (i.e. Tomb Raider 1, I have it ithe PC, Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn versions).

I have comics, books, strategy guides on print, strategy guided on VHS, toys, action figures, t-shirts, Lara's Leather Bomber Jacket from Tomb Raider 2 game, Timex Watches, the 2 movie adaptations on VHS and DVD, retail posters for the game, movie posters, movie banners, cardboard standee for the various games and the movies, 2 life size Lara Croft statue - each one 6ft tall and worth $1000s; and even Lara Croft Chocolate Bars in their original wrapping, sealed in bubblewrap and sitting in the refrigerator since 1998.

I didn't meet my wife until 2001 and she didn't move in with me until 2003, two years before we married.

Right from the bat, she wanted me to get rid of all my Tomb Raider stuff: i.e. throw them in the trash!

    You Kidding?!?

Some of that stuff is worth some $!!

She thinks it's not healthy for a grown man to play a video game whose main character is an animated woman with big breasts!

Well I fought her and I won and I haven't lost a single item in my collection and she knows better than to touch it or do anything with it - unless she wants a death wish!!

Best post ever Saunders, I had to share it with my wife. My wife "tolerates" my Bondom. She enjoys some of the movies (especially OHMSS and CR).

I have been collecting Bond memorabilia in the late 70s. My wife and I started getting serious right as GE came out so she was immersed in my Bondom right from the start. At least she knows it is part of who I am.

    I once had a GF.

    She didn't like Bond.

    ...we broke up :(

    ;)

I still live with my folks (sad I know) and my mum calls me obsessed. The only bond film she has ever been interested in watching was GE. At least she has good taste :)

I live with my mum. She watched her first Bond film, DN, in theaters on opening day here back in 1962. And she hasn't missed one since. We did a Bond-a-thon last summer, and she made her own ranking of the 22 films !!

My girl's rather neutral about Bond - for now. We haven't managed to see a Bond film together yet and I don't think she's ever seen one herself. She does, however, know that I'm a huge fan, that I spend a lot of time right here on the forum and that I spend a lot of time on all things Bond in general. She doesn't disapprove, fortunately, but she does give me bug eyes from time to time when I'm having a geek out moment. I have some of those, you know. ;;)

You must tell us her top 5, DC. ;;)

    My mum's top 5 :

    1 - TB
    2 - GF
    3 - GE
    4 - FRWL
    5 - TLD

She's a bit biased for the first 2 - she has very fond memories of Bondmania surrounding GF and TB.

She has seen every Bond film in theaters on opening day !

You know, you'd think with so many Bond fans being men that I wouldn't have this problem, but I've never dated a guy who was a Bond fan. Most of them were indifferent and would watch them with me, but none were really fans or cared much about it.

That said, my brother introduced me to one of his friends and later told me that I would like him because his favorite Bond is Timothy Dalton, and he lists off his favorite and least favorite Bond films. I went a little girl-psycho-crazy nuts and had us married in my day dream world in the next 5 minutes....Nothing will likely come of it, but you never know....

@DarthDimi A little tidbit : A childhood friend of my mum lives in Anet, barely 1 km from the castle, where the PTS of TB was filmed. Both my mum and her friend were there during filming - and saw the TB-prime Conners with their own eyes !! They were 15 at the time ! When they recall this day, I never know who they worship the most - The DB5 or Connery !! :-))

@DaltonCraig007 Funny story you've got there, DC. :) My closest encounter with a Bond production was the Thames sequence being shot for TWINE. I could see it from a distance. GF or TB would have been better though. ;;)

And I would have witnessed the rise of the Connery Bond, which beats witnessing the rise of the Brosnan Bond. :P Also, I would have loved to be there in the 60s, dude. ;;)

My mother is the one who introduced me to James Bond. He saw Dr No originally in theater. She always liked Connery. She watched but could take or leave Moore, Dalton or Brosnan. She never saw OHMSS on its first run, but I drug her to see it when it was showing at a theater in the early 80s and she liked it better than any of the Moore films. She really likes Daniel Craig as Bond right now, almost as much (if not more) than Connery.
  • Just stumbled across this thread, so apologies for late arrival.... car wouldn't start etc...

I hear what you're saying boys, and I feel your pain.

I first met my dear lady 15 years ago, and at that time my Bond collection stood proudly on shelves around the house.

After a few years it was all pushed back into a spare room....

When our first child came along, the room was needed- so Mr Bond was relegated to one display cabinet and the rest packed away.

Following our recent move to a much larger place (with rooms to spare) the unpacking of Bond has met with considerable resistance.....

Cries of 'Oh, I was gonna use that space for (insert pointless girlie object here)' can be heard from the wife....

And while she will go to the cinema to see the latest Bond fick, she will never rewatch one from the past.

Fortunately she does have some hobbies which take her out the house a few night a week, giving me and Mr Bond the personal space we need.

women..... and they don't consult you before they decide what to do with that space, do they?

They just assume it's okay because they are women.
  • They just assume it's okay because they are women.
Yes indeedy..... the first time my Bond collection was slightly cut back from public view, was because the shelf space was urgently needed.... this proved not to be the case as it was instead filled up with bizarre shaped girlie candles and ornaments.

    Really essential that is...

Women have such double standards, it's like when I talk about anything Bond related to my wife, she just cuts me off mid flow with a really patronizing 'Yes dear, that's very interesting' and immediately changes the subject, but woe betide me when I tried the same tactic recentley when she was wittering on all evening after her mother was suddenly rushed into hospital! :)

My wife is pretty tolerant of my 007 obsessions. I have a glass cabinet in the dining room for all my Bond nick-nacks (figures, cars, plates etc) which amazingly was her suggestion. She also usually gets me a Bond related book as an xmas present which helps her out in choosing gifts.

She doesn't mind the films although she's not a big fan. She likes Daniel Craig quite a bit even though she doesn't usually go for blonde men!

She came with me to see Spectre and quite liked it...

I think most women don't understand mens nerdy habits whether it's Comic books, football, Star Trek or 007 but mostly tolerate it.

My wife started to get more in the Bond films within the last 6-7 months. I remember when I first showed her a Bond film, it was CR and she couldn't make it past the Miami airport scene. Later that year she went with me to see SF and she somewhat enjoyed it. About 6-7 months ago, I popped in TMWTGG and she really enjoyed it and she really likes the Moore films so I followed it up with TSWLM and MR. Then the Brosnan films (which she found stupid, outside of GE) Then I spared her the "torture" of the first half of CR and started it with the train meet with Vesper. She enjoyed that along with QOS, but she fell head over heals for SP. So she is really on the Bond train with me now. Actually back in Jan, we were watching LALD and it put her into labor.
