Eastbourne Pier on fire and looks to be lost !!

This is another piece of British history burning, another Victorian pier is on fire right now and the fire crews are struggling to stop it,just like Hastings and Brighton .

This is so upsetting for history buffs like me,who are proud in what our ancestors did.
I'm so sad and angry about this,it had better not have been deliberate.

Oh wow. It reminds me of the fire on Weston pier a few years back.

Very sad. And we don't seem to have the will to rebuild them.

Very sad news indeed. I recall the other pier fires too. Once gone they never return it seems.

Weston and Hastings have both been rebuilt after they were burnt down.

That's very sad. I was in Eastbourne last November and it's a lovely pier. A shame they are always so prone to fires such as this.

The video on the Guardian's website looks like it is only the front bit. I would guess that the fire brigade has wetted the middle section so much that none of the wood will burn. Plus wind coming from the sea, pushing the fire to the land. If all ends well, they may be able to get away repairing the front-end.

Fire started in an Arcade-game shop - no comment! Those are the most useless shops anyway.

I hope they can and will rebuild it. I´m a sucker for that kind of architecture.

They seem to be saying that it was not suspicious which is a small relief I suppose.

Didn't Taken 2 end with the main characters on this pier as the camera panned out and the titles rolled? I know I recognize this from a movie I've seen in the last few years.

The Alan Partridge Alpha Papa 2013 movie ends on a pier too, but I can't recall which one (Norwich?)

Apparantly the fire started behind some wood panelling,so it looks like an electrical fire originally.

This is how it looks the morning after :

At least the metal structure is holding at the moment.

Wow, it's totally gone. I expect the framework is wrecked as well due to the heat. What a shame.

It's not as bad as it first looked. It's only the arcade building at the front that was destroyed. The metal skeleton has survived.

    Could've been a lot worse.

Real shame, it seems to be happening far too often!
